Help Samsung InstinctQ or HTC Hero?

I just got back from the sprint productivity now confrence in Phoenix. After playing with both phones...The hero is awesome and so is the Samsung InstinctQ, It is indeed an amoled screen, and it is capacitive.

Heres the only thing I could take into accoung. HTC is known for producing some of the most awesome phones in the market place. You can count on HTC to support the phone after launch.

Samsung however at least in the consumer space, releases a phone and thats pretty much it. Will we actually see updates from samsung....hard to tell.

The size between the hero and the sammy are close. They are about the same thickness but the sammy is a little bit bigger and are just as about as snappy. The heros I played with did not have the new firmware however so rotatation was slow. The sammy was instant once it was flipped i wish though it would rotate just by turning it if i didnt want to actually use the keyboard (theres prolly an app for it like on the winmo phones), This is useful for gps and mapping applications where the keyboard might not be necessary.

I didnt pick up the spec sheet while i was there but if I can get ahold of them ill let you know

Man...I love that screen. Hard to say

can you please let me know if it had sprint tv, or do you guys know if it will come with that? also did it have a compass? one last question whats the middle button for is it an optical track pad or just a one button thing like the pre?

Chances are good it will be bundled with the same apps the Hero shipped with. Sprint TV, NFL and NASCAR.

Its supposed to be an optical trackpad.

Surely he's gotta be wrong about this though, right? I mean that would be amazing, but... I'd be really shocked.

If I remember right, a few years ago when they released the original Instinct, it was touted as an iPhone killer, and about the same time, Apple dropped the 3G version. As we all know by now, the Instinct wasnt even close to being the iPhone killer they thought it was

So, it could stand to reason, that Samsung is at it again trying to challenge Apple for the throne to be king of mobile handsets. If that is the case, it would seem fitting to launch a phone with as much memory on board as the top of the line 3GS and then beat it by being able to double the memory with a removable memory source.

Samsung only has to build the phones specs to stand against the iPhone, and let android do the rest.

good point - but i kinda don't think we're there yet

the "next" generation of HW and android (2.0? 2.0+?) might reach parity

but i have a feeling that android will have to do more than just "equal" to acheive the perception of equality with the iphone

its an uphill battle to be sure

I agree with you there, Android has a way to go to catch up to the polish of the iPhones OS. In some ways, its better and in others... not so much.

Closing the gap on the hardware is a good start though.

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I have been over at XDA for around a year but have grown tired of how uptight they are, so I figured I would try this place out. I'm not going for Sprint, mainly because I REALLY want the Droid, but anyway. Don't bother with XDA for anything not made by HTC, the Admin/Owner, Flar, has made it very clear she will NEVER open a sub-forum for a non-HTC made device. That really sucks because all the best ROM cooks and devs are there, but I'm sure they will migrate if they get one of the newer Android powered phones not made by HTC.

Also, regarding getting Sense UI onto a Samsung. That requires root, and from what I know you can't root a Samsung yet, someone with a Galaxy might be able to prove me wrong as I'm not totally sure. Using the Hero/Sense ROM on a G1/MyTouch is much easier because it is a HTC device so it has similar boot procedures, but it can definitely be ported. I hope that someone does it, because the Moment is a nice looking phone. If it had a larger screen I would get it.

I also had a question for someone who knows, what architecture is the Moment's processor/chipset. I know its 800mhz but we all know higher speeds aren't everything, like a Pentium 4 2.96mhz VS a Core i7 2.56 (or lower). Sure the P4 has a higher clock speed but its much, much, much slower then the i7. I know the DROID uses the ARM Cortex A8 architecture and a TI OMAP 3430 clocked to 550mhz, but it's said to be the FASTEST Android device yet. If the Samsung uses the same architecture then I might have to re-consider.

Exactly, and ARM11 is very old.

Old doesn't necessarily mean bad, it should at least mean less/no hardware issues associated with it since it's so well known :) It's still a capable processor any way you slice it.

Yes it is capable, and has been around longer, but it is being faded out for the newer better architectures. If you have the choice to use Cortex A8 instead of ARM11 then its a no brainer, but on Sprint you don't have that choice yet.

Already being done. The UI has been ported to the iPhone, WinMo and Blackberry already. Some of the widgets lack the full features, but the look you get is very close.
Yesterday evening I got the new Samsung Moment. This is an upgrade from the HERO. Samsung Moment has a full keyboard. However I have read that this phone would become equivalent to the iPhone if I ported/copied the HERO Sense UI onto the phone. Never done this type of thing, but do have a technical background. Can you give me details on how I do this? Thanks

Ok well its not very simple, and you would be the first to do it. You need to know linux for one, and do a dump of your Moment. You will need to also get a Hero rom from a site like XDA. Also the Hero kernel might be something you need too.

Now once you have all of that you need to blend the Sense/Hero coding with your Moment dump. I have never done something like this nor do I know any technical aspects of it, but that is the basic jist of it all. Now if the resolution is different on the Moment then on the Hero then you will also need to do a shitload of image resizing, but I think they are the same.

Oh and one last thing, you need to figure out how to root the moment to load a custom rom, you also may need to get the correct recovery, spl, and radio (with my G1 I had to do that for Hero/Sense to work). You are undertaking a great task because you will be porting something to another manufacturer, cross breading rom's is never easy but can be done.

Yes indeed, I should of said that. If you mess up, and most likely with this being a first time thing, you prolly will. It can really brick your phone for good and unless you know anything about JTAG procedures you will be f'ed.
