Will the Eris be able to run 2.2?

Just to add fuel to the fire in this thread... This article refers to Froyo and the G1: Google Says Froyo Technically Possible on G1 | AndroidGuys)

Here are two quotes: "Froyo will technically run on any Android phone on the market today." and "The reporter was told that the builds were FAST, and written with the slower processor and memory in mind."

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but sounds promising...

Great info.

2.2 sounds great for the Eris, with those quotes in mind.

So, here I go again; I was fine with 1.5.. I'm fine with 2.1 (reluctantly ;)).. I guess there is a chance I'll have to be fine with 2.2 (although I doubt it given the EOL noises being made from legitimate sources).

Man, do I miss my StarTac or what. :D

Not previously discussed (I don't think) the size of the Flash "ROM". The G1, which will not receive 2.2, has 256ROM; this is said to be the reason that it will not receive 2.2.
The Eris has twice as large a ROM (512MB) so at least in this respect we have hope.

That's what I've been doing.

So, the 2.2 OS might need serious widget and stock applications tweaking.. that fits in with my original thinking about why, even now, the Eris seems laggy to many users.

I have been running on that assupmtion for some time as well. I think that Sense a big part of it. Disable sense and, for me at least, the phone becomes very fast and programs open pretty quick. I blame a poorly ported sense for 2.1 eris as the base for most peoples problems.

I think HTC needs to step back and look at re-writing the code for sense instead of hacking at it here and there. Write a version for each of their hardware platforms.

However just my opinion.

I'm trying to figure out how internet forums bring out so much misplaced bravado, definitive statements and misinformed opinion - especially when there is so much history proving these people are continually just plain wrong!
Will 2.2 run on an Eris? Run, maybe. Officially released, maybe. Is it so hard to admit that no one really knows at this point?

That's what this forum (and most other forums of this ilk) is, a place built on bravado, definitive statements and misinformed opinions, with a jewel of knowledge that every once in a while pokes through the mess. Remember this thread was "Will the Eris be able to run 2.2?" A simple question that has generated 2 pages of replies with:

I Don't Know
Sure it Will
Ain't No Way
Ya but at what trade-off (Mine)
and Yours

Sounds like a pretty standard forum to me. But hey maybe mine's just another "misinformed opinion" ;)

I agree with Frisco, the Eris is pretty much at the top of its game with the latest update. Don't get me wrong; I'd LOVE 2.2 for my Eris. Its plenty fast now, but faster is (almost) always better.
Ability to run/install apps to the SD card is very attractive. I consistently get the "low on space" message ever since the 2.1 upgrade.
