Dialling shuts down my screen.

I have Moto G Power 5G 2024 and use either a softphone (Groundwire) or Facebook messenger to talk to people. I have a data-only account.
I get the same following results with either app.
When I select a number or dial a new number, the moment I press the talk button, my screen shuts down, but the connection attempt proceeds.
To see what is happening with the call, I press the power button to turn the screen back on, but I have no audio, in or out. I press the speaker button and I get audio.

Receiving a call is more frustrating. I hear the call, but the screen does not surface. I need to open thinhe app based the ringtone, then press the talk button, which shuts down the screen, then open the screen and press the speaker button before speaking.

It is almost as if the onboard phone settings are interfering with my softphone and Messenger processes. Do you have any hints about what might be happenng? Thanks

Yeah mine used to do that as well, it could be using so much Facebook too, that has been notorious for shutting down cells on both of my motorolla cell phones, so I just simply cleared out the cache and it works, always turn off the background mobile data on each app that you are working on third party too.

I am not clear which cash you're referring to. Could you elucidate?

In each app:

See how my Background data is turned off? Underneath wifi and mobile data for each app.

I found that Google's phone application was set as default and to turn it off I had to go to phone permissions and turn off every single permission that it had and then voila the dialer works correctly on both ground wire and messenger.
Now, if I could just get the speaker to work properly IE provide audio without having to turn on the external speaker

Have any blue tooth interferance bud?

Here's the meaning of that post based on the full page context:

Problem:
Manfred was experiencing issues with making and receiving calls using two apps—Groundwire (a softphone) and Facebook Messenger—on his Moto G Power 5G phone. When dialing out, the screen would shut down, audio wouldn’t work unless he manually activated the speaker, and incoming calls required a complicated workaround just to answer.

Discovery:
Manfred found that Google’s default phone app was interfering with how these alternative apps handled calling. Specifically, it had default status and active permissions that seemed to conflict with Groundwire and Messenger.

Solution Attempt:
To resolve this, Manfred disabled all permissions for the Google Phone app. After doing so, the calling functions in both Groundwire and Messenger started working correctly—the dialer no longer triggered screen shutdowns or blocked audio.

Remaining Issue:
He’s still struggling to get normal speaker audio output. Right now, he can only hear sound through the external speaker (typically used for speakerphone), not the phone’s standard earpiece or internal speaker.

From the broader forum discussion, it looks like other users have faced similar issues—some suspect interference from background data usage, or even Bluetooth confusion. Manfred is continuing to troubleshoot and might consult Motorola support next.

Want help digging deeper into Android system settings, or figuring out ways to fix the speaker issue? I’m game.
