iPhone not coming to verizon? Don't hold out on D. Incredible!! (Article inside)

I have always wanted an iphone since they came out. My mom and dad have one..thats a shocker..but the more I play with the Dinc the more I love it..I think the only thing great right now about the iphone is the apps. other than that, DINC all the way!!

Flame me all you want, but the user experience on the iPhone/iPod is still better. My 3rd gen iPod touch is a lot more fun to use than ANY android device I've tried, including the Incredible.

And yes, I'm "tech-savvy." Not that I have to prove anything on an Internet forum...

I mean, yes, everybody and their dog has an iPhone, it seems, but it doesn't mean it's a bad device. It's a GREAT device, and Android is not as polished in comparison. And that's what I care about. The somewhat limited amount of things that the iPhone does it does *very* well. Whereas Android is a Jack of all trades.

And I'm not even going to mention all the half-baked form factors that Android comes on.

I really want to love Android, because AT&T is not an option, but it always seems to be a compromise.

I agree with this. Android is awesome. I love my Incredible and can't remember being this attached to an inanimate object.

BUT...

A "polished UX" to me means considering the lowest common denominator...so, if EVERYONE can have an experience that's as devoid of hiccups as possible, then the polish of that average UX is what should be considered.

Because of the iPhone's closed-platform nature - also Apple's discriminating app store approval process - there are less unknown variables for Apple to worry about in the end-user UX.

Android's potential is immediately obvious to me - a very tech-savvy user - but I will admit that there are many aspects of the OS (including some staple apps like the Facebook app) that just seem half-assed. I bet the wrinkles will be ironed out within a year or so, but the iPhone's 3-year head start means Apple has had time to observe UX and respond with OS and authoring tool updates and adjust the app approval process.

There are other aspects of Android that are way beyond the iPhone's, and they are mostly due to the open nature of Android, thus bringing attention to the potential of the platform.

The iPhone is no longer the big dog smartphone on the market. There are a ton of people who will stay loyal to the iPhone for different reasons but I would say that a large percentage of iPhone users would switch to an Android phone if they were open minded enough to try it.

I really hope it doesn't come to Verizon. I love having something that doesn't say Microsoft or Apple, I've given those companies enough of my money. Besides I'm waist deep in Android mania right now and I see myself here for a long time.

Trivia: the average number of games a Wii owners has is one.
Not to say you're wrong, but I know MANY Wii owners (personally and/or through internet forums) and every one of them has more than one game. Now maybe they only PLAY one game, heh, but they certainly all own several.

The moto shadow looks like it might be worth waiting for. A bit big for my taste, though. So happy to have a normal size phone.

This article is accurate in my opinion. We'll know more on June 7. But I'm willing to bet my Incredible that there will be no iphone CDMA. Verizon can not adequately support a 4G phone until at least 2012. It's as simple as that. Do I believe the iphone will come to Verizon - absolutely. In about 2 years. But Android is already better that the over simplistic iphone.

Trivia: the average number of games a Wii owners has is one. It's about six for 360/PS3 owners. This tells me that people who buy the Wii get wrapped up in the novelty, purchase one, and then realize it kinda sucks and leave it to sit in the corner. The iPhone is pretty similar. ;)

Not that it matters, but I highly doubt the Wii figure. My son has about 15 so there have to be quite a few with 0-1 games just to average him out. Really that is an age thing I believe. As my son got older, he's gravitated towards the XBox 360 for games like Halo. He still uses the Wii but not as much.

I don't think people are leaving the iPhone in droves because it is some sort of underpowered novelty. I realize people leave because of coverage (or like me stick with VZW for coverage), but I thought iPhones had one of the highest retention rates out there. I like my Incredible but would consider an iPhone if it ever came to VZW.

I'm still on the fence regarding iPhone vs Android for my next phone. Both have clear advantages. I'm not leaving Verizon so of course I really don't have a choice now, but if the iPhone does come it will be a tough decision to make. Also, there really hasn't been an Android phone to come out that fully meets what I'm looking for either.

iPhone
  • Has a clear leg-up when it comes to third party support. Many websites/companies put their attention to the iPhone first because it's still the most popular platform and probably will be for a long time.
  • I already have my media in iTunes and have purchased games for my iTouch. Having this with me 24x7 is a huge plus.
  • There's only one iPhone a year while it seems like there's a new Android phone every month at least. It's makes signing that 2 year contract really tough. At least with the iPhone I know I'll have the best option for a year.
  • No fragmented OS. Android is getting really sloppy with the multiple versions out there and speed at which their phones are updated. The device manufacturers keep insisting on pushing their custom UIs into their phones (BLUR & Sense). Apple keeps it much simpler.

Android
  • Clearly the most customizable and unrestrictive. Things are possible on Android (without root) that iPhone will probably never get.
  • It's rapidly growing. I think more apps and attention will come over time. Android just needs that flagship device to attract the masses. The Droid was okay but it still lacked the polish/sexiness to be a homerun.
  • Love the customizable widgets and information that's automatically updated right on the homepages.
  • Flash = more possibilities

I think BLUR and Sense are the biggest turn-off for me right now. If Google could somehow reign in these companies to try to unify the platform and ensure they can keep up with the fast pace of OS updates I'd be much higher on Android.

Why is Sense a big turn-off for you? I personally love Sense because of all of the useful widgets and improvements that HTC made over stock Android. I used the Launcherpro stock Android UI and it was pretty boring. Much less available widgets too.

Most people want an iPhone because it's trendy and a status symbol. It's not a coincidence that most people in a Starbucks are working away on their Macbook and have an iPhone attached to their hip. Trendy places attract trendy people.

Just look at the people who shop inside of Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch stores. Same story.

I get sooooooooo tired of hearing ridiculous stereotypical sentiments like this. I've been using Apple products from a time when people laughed if you told them you used a Mac. Like most people, I like Apple products because they work extremely well. I make my living using Macs, and that's not something I would jeopardize to just being trendy.

Having said that, I also don't blindly buy whatever product Apple churns out (another stereotype often expounded by Apple Haters) . I like the Incredible so much that I could care less if the iPhone ever comes to Verizon. I buy what works for me, not what's trendy.

Because HTC is slow to update it. I'd much rather HTC release their widgets/improvements separately than revamp the entire UI. Android 2.2 looks like it has come a long way visually.

I have a Wii and it does in fact suck phatty balls.

I kinda agree. LauncherPro beta is way better for me, as much as I like some of the widgets.

I've also noticed that the amount of battery being used by "Android System" went waaaaaaay down after I disabled Sense.

As an incredible owner and a former I-phone owner I think you have some very good points. The one thing that I think apple has a leg up is the app store. The apps. on apple are much more polished when they hit the market IMHO (or at least in my little experience with Android which I admit might change as I become more familiar). I have downloaded boatloads of apps. that were buggy that I have since got rid off since joining Android.

With that being said I much more enjoy my Incredible but I will admit you do have some valid concerns.

Some other things I have noticed are: Build quality of the I-phone is second to none. I never needed a cover for my phone and dropped it several times and NEVER had an issue. I do not think that is the case at all with the inc. I wish that Direct TV would get an app. for Android as I loved that app. and used it quite frequently.

I can understand why someone would want an iphone over an android phone?

The iphone comes out of the box easy to use and ready to go where as android phones have to be tailored to that person. I like to personalize things to work for me but some people like to be told what they need and have an easy use.
I've converted a few iphone users to android but some don't even want to take a peak at android "no steve told me iphone is the cool thing to have and the bestest most amazingist phone"
some people just need decisions made for them and really the iphone is still a very good device just not for me

The only thing, IMO, keeping Verizon from getting the Iphone is apple's policy of total control over every aspect of the product. Now, Verizon has really eased up, especially on the Andorid phones in what they dictate needs to be on the phone. thier Blackberry's are still filled with crapwear (bing, NFL Mobile, My verizon, ect) but the droids have gotten off scot free. But Verizon still has final word on OS updates and I think Apple wants no part of that. Other than that, there isnt a reason other than exclusivity agreements that there shouldnt be a Verizon Iphone.

Anyway, love the Inc so Im not losing no sleep over it regardless.

I think the fanboys are hilarious.

Those who can't see that the iPhone has some clear, undeniable advantages in some areas are simply deluded.

One of the clearest issues for me that hasn't been mentioned yet is the money we invest in applications. Most of my apps are free, but I will purchase good, high quality apps. However, none of us can predict our future product needs - but I can tell you one thing, if I buy Apple App Store applications, I know what my future phone's form factor is going to be. They may release one other phone at some point, but basically I'm going to know I will have a large, touch screen only, candybar phone.

One of the biggest reasons I won't purchase any more high dollar apps is because I want to switch over to Android and I'm willing to build my app collection there. I know that, in a year if I want a smaller form factor, I can have one. I know that if I want a physical keyboard, I can have one. I know that if I want a giant, 4+ inch screen, the option is there.

There are lots of other reasons to like Android but that right there is very appealing to me - knowing that I'm not locked into a single form factor if I want to spend $30 on a specialized app.

Did you notice that I used the word "most" and not "all"? So what's stereotypical about it? To me "most" would be over 50% of the people who are sitting on laptops in a Starbucks. In my PERSONAL experience, over 50% of the people I've ever seen in a Starbucks are rocking a Macbook and/or an iPhone/iPod.

That constitutes most for me. And I don't go to Starbucks much because I don't drink coffee. My girlfriend does so I go with her every so often. Is this scientific and universal data? No. But I never claimed it was.

And I don't care how long you have been using Apple products. I never asked nor do I care. What does that have to do with my statement in the first place? Sounds like an elitist cry to me.

Something sounds awfully familiar about this cycle...

Oh right I remember now. It goes like this:

1. Some random-ass blogger is like, "OMG LOL I shoudl start a rumor lolzor"

2. He writes the following on his blog, "ZOMG guyzzzzzzzzzzzzz My best friends dad's buddy's sister's niece's husband works for Apple and he totally said that maybe possibly kinda maybe there will eventually be an iPhone on Verizon on June 26th!!!!!!!!!! ZOMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG kthx please digg/tweet/props me!!!!!!!!!!

3. enGadget and other stupid blogs repost, lending the rumor credit. They also are like "hey Apple give us an UNBRANDED prototype so we can fuel the fire!"

4. Steve Jobs is like, "*I am not a crook*Here you go, but there will be "legal action" so it looks legit"

5. Turns out everything was false after all, which we should've known because come on, don't we learn about rumors after the seventh time? Plus, the iPhone that was "found in a bar" didn't say Verizon.

6. It just generates more buzz for a phoen that is mostly "fashion" not "function"

7. Steve Jobs wins.

Lmao awesome.

Ive found in my experience most people only use macs for 4 reasons: longtime dedicated user, intense media work, its simple and its a trend.
The simple and trend factor have the highest rates in my personal experience. Some people actually look at me weird when i say i dont own anything apple. Had an ipod touch, had it stolen. Dont miss it. Used an iphone. Same as an ipod with phone capabilities. Played with some macs recently for the first time in 15 years. Still dont like them. I actually think theye too simple. I had problems just trying to copy a file. im sure even if i was comfortable using osx i still wouldnt like it. The only thing i see apple did well was create a very clean and smooth ui. Even still, i see apple as driving competition. Pushes competitors to work harder. Microsoft got lazy for a bit sitting alone on top. Google agrees with this in the phone industry. This is the only appreciation i can show for apple.

I good friend of mine recently purchased a mac book pro. He has been a long times windows user and the only apple product he has ever purchased was an Ipod. He seems, without any hesitation that the Mac Book is the best computer he has ever used. Boot up times are short, there is never any lockups and the threat of a virus is almost nill. I think this "trend" thing is overblown. Apple happens to make excellent products.

In my experience, iPhones are not too happy with being dropped. I've helped more iPhone owners replace their cracked screens on phones that had only been dropped once than I can really count. I'd rather the phone bust apart and then I'll snap it back together than crack its glass on its first 3 ft drop.

Just my $0.02.

Because they are supreme overlord of their products. They don't allow significant customizing, building your own, or a lot of feeling that its "mine". I'll take a Linux box over Windows or OSX any day. It's easy to make a great computer product when you insist on controlling every aspect of it.

Macs are for people who want their hand held in the computing experience. PCs (Linux and somewhat Windows) are for the rest of us who want to be a part of the experience, not just on the outside.

If some of you are thinking about not getting the Dinc, in case the iphone might come to Verizon, you might be holding your breath a lot longer than we previously thought... maybe.
