Root Unwanted apps

Another thing I came across that was bugging me was after deleting the Mms.apk, I got a bad delay using handcent when I would receive a txt. My pop up would appear but the notification in the status bar and the vibrate and notification alert would be delayed from playing/displaying from anywhere from 3-8 seconds. This result was the same on sense-able roms and all aloysius roms I tried. After putting Mms.apk back in the app folder I had no delay. Guess I'm leaving the Mms app on because I cant stand the delay I get without it.

After a lot of trial and error, I'm pretty sure removing Talk.apk results in a gmail error where new emails don't get pushed to the phone...

Yep, I was noticing that yesterday, Gmail was showing that I had 5 unread emails but only one was showing as unread, no matter how much I synced. I went to my Gmail on google and it was telling me correct with the unread emails. Thanks for pointing that one out, I wouldn't have put those two together......I hope I can re-install with Ti rather than doing a full nand.

Thanks again.

Anybody know how, or if it's possible to get rid of the "Call History" apk.

MJL, I haven't noticed the delay with handcent, I haven't been using pop-ups. I'll check it out and see if I'm getting the same thing.

I did not remove the Talk.apk but have removed the email and mail.apk's and would get this error. But only once. Once I fixed it in Google on the net, it fixed the issue. If you are getting this issue a lot, try *228 op 2 and let it reboot. This fixed it for me.

i was wondering why it would delay like a mofo. thanks for finding this out. now texting doesnt hurt so much, lol

It was really bugging me, The main issue I had was that since the delay was so long sometimes, if I got s text pop up, read it and closed it right away, the notification would still tell me I had a new msg even tho I already read the thing.

Interesting point Euro, I havent tried using it without pop up but I want the pop up because its too convenient for me to give up. Let us know if using the pop up with mms.apk deleted is the reason for the delay and not just from deleting mms.

c00gz:

Did you not remove footprints because you use it, or because you had problems with Nav afterwards?

I removed it and didn't noticed any problems with maps or Nav. When I did a quick 30-second test with the camera I didn't notice any errors there either.

I can confirm this as well. Used nav for bout 3 hours without footprints and no issues. It did fc on me once but that was because i was doing a lot on the phone.

what is Rosie.apk and is it important

Rosie.apk is senseUI

No SenseUI looks like this.

do not delete Mms.apk or Mms.odex if you plan on sending/receiving picture messages using Handcent SMS.

At least for me anyways, after I deleted Mms.apk and Mms.odex a few days ago my buddy asked why I never replied to his picture he sent and I told him he didn't send me one. He sent it again and it never showed up. I tried to send one and handcent had to force close.

Tonight after a few hours of searching I found the commands to push the apk and odex files back the directory they belong. I rebooted and handcent still force closed when sending. I had to open up the native messaging client and send a picture message in it, which worked! Then I backed out and went to handcent and was able to send/receive picture messages again. Hope this helps someone.

I had that problem a last week actually, I went back and re-flashed a backup that had mms still included and pictures did work again. I couldn't take it though and uninstalled Mms.apk/odex because I tested it just after deleting the app the first time.
I found this out yesterday though, it's something to do with the file compression.....I'm able to send small 100k files with no problem, it's when Handcent has to compress a file to send / receive is when it's screwing up and giving a FC.

Update: I re-flashed Vanilla this morning so I would have all of my deleted apps back to a fresh start. However, once I started to delete apps I didn't want/need, I changed it up a little bit and downloaded "Root Explorer" and simply moved my apps from system/app to system/lost+found. Apps are out of the drawer but still on the phone so I can re-install easily if needed.
I did leave "Talk" and "Mms" installed. Haven't had a chance to test large pictures using Handcent yet, but will later today.

edit: Had to increase Mms size in handcent to 500k to finally get a picture sent. But it went with no problems.

Go to a command prompt and type "adb shell"

You should see a # sign, that's the root terminal on your phone.

In order to remove apps, you need to remount your system folder on the phone with write permissions. To do this type "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system" (it won't say anything it will just go back to a # sign again)

Now type "cd /system/app" and then "ls"

That will list all the apk files, which are the applications.

You can remove them by typing "rm -r Whatever.apk" (it's case sensitive)

Amazon is amazonmp3.apk
Twitter is HtcTwitter.apk and com.htc.TwitterWidget.apk
Visual VM is VVMStub_v3.apk

BE VERY CAREFUL doing this. Don't just go around deleting apps. Some may not be safe to delete as they are connected with other apps, etc. Those three I posted are safe to delete.

im not gettin it to go past the "mount" part

Quick question, those of you who deleted "HtclockScreen.apk", does your alarm still work properly?

I deleted it last Friday, I set my alarm for work Monday, and couldn't get the darn thing to shut off. I ended up having to pull the battery, I thought the misses was gonna kill me when the alarm was going off at 5:30am and I couldn't shut it off....

Htclockscreen removal will mess up the alarm. Notice with Gridlocks Vanilla ROM, he had to include Better Alarm in the package because of removing the lockscreen.

I've been pulling out apks for awhile now on various ROMs but I just noticed today on my latest house cleaning that it doesn't seem to actually recoup any storage space. I always just assumed it did. But it frees space somewhere right? I assume its in a "system partition." So if this is the case can I push the apks I want into this "system partition" to free up my regular storage space?

*EDIT*

Never mind. I just didn't search hard enough. I found what I needed, actually at the mobile defense website. It turns out its really easy to do:

adb remount
adb pull /data/app/yourapp.apk C:\
adb shell
rm /data/app/yourapp.apk
exit
adb push C:\yourapp.apk /system/app
adb reboot

It's slightly modified from the website to fit my needs but it worked like a charm.

you can do this file mounting, file exploring, and copy/move/delete with ES File Explorer.. saves typing all the commands. but that is just my 2cents.

In ES file Explorer, you do have to go into the settings and at the very bottom there are ROOT option to gain root access and mount the system for deleting and adding.

ok then, I'm trying to remove some of the stock apps, but seem to be failing miserably...

C:\Documents and Settings\Nik\My Documents\Downloads\ADB\ADB>adb shell
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cd /system/app
cd /system/app
# ls
ls
com.htc.StockWidget.apk
com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.odex

(long list of apps etc...)

com.htc.WeatherWidget.apk
com.htc.TwitterWidget.odex
com.htc.TwitterWidget.apk
com.htc.StockWidget.odex
# rm -r HtcTwitter.apk
rm -r HtcTwitter.apk
rm failed for HtcTwitter.apk, Directory not empty

i get the same reply trying to remove stocks too.

Am i doing something blatantly obviously wrong here???

I want rid of...
News
Peep
Stocks
Talk
Youtube.

Help!!!

A much easier way to delete stock apps is by using Root Explorer.
Simply go to:
System/app
click on the button on the top right "mount r/w"
find the app you want to delete
"stocks.apk"
long press.....delete file.
Your app is gone! :D

You need to spell the apk EXACTLY how it shows when listed. If it has com.Htc.blah.apk, you need to type that exactly how it shows when using the rm -r command

Yes, but if you have a lot of apks you remove like I do, this takes forever. Having a saved list of apk's in a txt file to remove is easier than using rootexplorer
