Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Well if its a defective SD card rather then a software issue, IMHO its a minor issue. I have around 10 or more micro sd cards laying around my house. You can get a 8gb card at walmart for under 25$. Now if its a firmware or software issue I completely concur. We just have to wait and see. But I do agree that the casual non techie consumer might just waive the white flag and return the phone.

I hear what you're saying - I have my share of cards sitting around as well...but I'm not worried about folks like us. I'm worried about the unwashed masses that will want this phone, see that it can't consistently take/send pictures, and then return it...and in returning it the will sully Sprint's already sullied name.

Your attitude is not appreciated. There is no proof that Sprint, HTC, and/or Android having acknowledged this issue... just random post by some schmuck on Facebook.

There's maybe 2 dozen folks on the forums who have an Evo - and a non-trivial number have posted about having this issue. And no, I'm not going to go back through the thread to count names, just to satisfy you.

Assuming we have no solid developments this week, I'm looking forward to launch date to confirm whether launch Evo's have different build/software version numbers or not.

Actually your kinda right it was a bit snotty I just took your reply as snotty and probably doesnt help that I m quitting smoking cold turkey :)
Sounds like to me this is going to be a hardware/software problem.
What would be most helpful is creating a list of the different brands of micro sds that are being used.
Some manufacturing processes can affect how a computer (lets face it the Evo is a computer) reads/writes cards.
If we can identify one particular brand of cards acting up that is a HUGE step.
Seeing as how you are involved in the problem I would recommend posting anything and everything you were doing.
For example what were you doing in the 5 previous apps that you ran? This could of led to line corruption on the sd card.
Goodluck and if theres anything I can do to help just let me know; I've spent the past 10 years in the Tech field so hopefully I can.

I agree, you make a good point.

My BB blows. I called to confirm my pre-order. Chick was like "well did you preorder?" I said yes. She says well then you should be good and that she couldn't check. I'm just like ok ?!? They won't even say what # I am I mean is it that serious ? I told her I preordered on the 14th she says u should be in the 1st or 2nd shipment and that's all the info she could give. Of course MY BB is dumbest in the country apparently. I read other posts where peoples BB's were giving more info. After reading how a few guys preorders were messed up I wanted to check mines out. Just have to wait I guess.

I really haven't been on much being Memorial Day and all... but I feel your pain bud. It's this kind of crap that causes me to go the extra step. I would call back and ask again for the info you need. If you can't seem to get your answers, ask the once question you know they're trained to respond to. Give me corporates number. I've worked retail in the past and you don't want to deal with corporate... However, prior to doing so I would ask to speak with the manager, because it almost sounds like you got a dud... bud... Seriously, it's so sad that customer service just seems like a dieing formality... Good luck we're with you!

If you've been busting your ass, to not only troubleshoot an issue, but to report back to the general public and share as much information as possible to help others who are having similar issues, and told that your panties are in a bunch, you might be a bit pissed too.

I was being... polite. In real life, I would have used more direct language that would have gotten me an infraction.

I appreciate your comments. I too, am in the technology field, so while I'm no Android dev/hacker, digging around Linux systems and other geeky things are not new to me.

Thus far, information is still sporadic. I'm hoping more people who originally reported the issue will go back to the thread and reply with more details. I too, want to know whether they are having the same issues with Class 4 or higher sd cards or not.

What troubles me is that this could be a more widerspread Android issue. If you search under keywords like "SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem," you'll see that it has occurred with other phones and Android users. What doesn't add up is if this is an Android OS issue, why is this not more prevalent and/or why hasn't Android addressed it?

I couldn't say yet...I actually want to get my hands on it that much more...only problem is wife is now thinking no. She hates intermittent problems. They are the hardest to diagnose. I honestly think the solution would be beyond my grasp but I think finding the trigger would help the people who can.

@ Bek - I see you're having issues with the SD card. I'm not sure what that's all about without reading all your posts, but I do have a bit of information I would like to share with everyone concerning this issue.

Yesterday, I posted a message about downloading a special SD Formatter utility, but today I found out that isn't necessary. That's because the EVO 4G has a built-in format utility. I have a 2GB microSD card with no data on it, that I swapped out to test it and it was fast and easy. For those getting the phone on Friday, I would suggest formatting the SD card right away before you add any data. That completely solved the problems I was having. Here are the steps:

On the EVO, Go to Settings >> SD card & phone storage >> Unmount SD Card and click to unmount it. The next menu item is “Format SD card”. Click it and you will get a warning that all data will be erased. Click it again to format the card and it’s done in seconds.

Edit: I should add, if you have data, back it up first, then copy it back to the card after it’s formatted.

Although this might work, it's a load of crap if everyone would have to do that with their EVOs when they purchase. I'm hoping/assuming that the issues are limited to the I/O EVOs, but if not that's pretty lame.

Thanks for posting your potential workaround.

EDIT: Upon reading more, maybe not the best course of action...

it's 'not a 4g fee'!!! Arrgghh
I agree that the $10 is not a 4G fee but a fee to use the EVO. But, I still find many people (and many reviewers) thinking that the $10 is a 4G fee. Therefore, I think Sprint might want to change their statement about the $10 or Sprint needs to re-iterate that the $10 is NOT a 4G fee. Right now, there are doing nothing and this is adding to the confusion/mistake that people are feeling about the $10 extra they have to pay.

Bill - there's a whole detailed thread regarding this issue, in the Troubleshooting forum.

The SD Formatter functions differently from the Android based format function. The latter only does a QUICK format, while the former allows you to do a FULL format, which takes a much longer amount of time.

If you take the time to research this further and more in depth, you'll see that while many have not been able to determine root cause, they have determined that the best stop-gap solution is to use the SD Formatter. That has helped folks far more reliably, rather than an OS based QUICK FORMAT.

PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!!!

I cannot emphasize this enough. Why? Because some folks will blindly start up their phones, blow away their SD Card, then find later that the Installer for HTC Sync happened to be on that SD Card that they just nuked.

Please don't advise folks to do this immediately!!! Anyone who listens to this advice blindly will just be screwing themselves out of the gate.

Within a day or two of getting the phone, I started getting read/write errors and formatting the card is what worked for me.

You're right though, Bek. There is an executable on the card for HTC Sync. That's what these forums are all about - to learn from one another. In my post yesterday, I gave the instructions for backing up and restoring data after the format is complete. I'm just saying that reformatting the card is what worked for me and it could for others as well and that's why I posted. My first thought was that there was something wrong with the phone, but that wasn't it.

have you heard of a carrier removing features of an update?
If I am not mistaken, the original HTC phone that is being called the EVO 4G, had free tethering, which Sprint is charging $30. I seriously doubt that Sprint will put on Froyo on the phone and loose $30 in the bargain. Does not make much business sense.

Bill- if you want to advise people to wipe their cards, fine. Just be sure to clarify because many won't read every post. Heck, you even stated that you did not bother when you chimed in. The last thing we need is for a newcomer to partially read something & make a grave error.

Also, you state you gave instructions on how to backup & restore "after" a format is complete. After a format, all data is wiped. There's nothing to back up. You sure that's what you meant?

Sprint says it will allow PDAnet tethering on EVO 4G, suggests it will also allow built-in Wi-Fi mobile hotspot capability in 2.2 'Froyo' update for Android | TECHNOLOGY Blog | dallasnews.com

There's a ton of other links, but that's pretty much the gist. Some mention Sprint saying, 'we can't stop 3rd party apps for tethering, but they're not as secure (B.S.) as our app'

The Evo will get FroYo, but it may not include native tethering. Basically, from what I understand, is Sprint is trying to grab as many people that don't want to bother or don't understand 3rd party tethering early before the 2.2 update. After which, the major amount of users will be people accustomed to using that specific app, and Corporate/Enterprise users. You (as a consumer) can still download those '3rd party apps' however...

Hey Bek- you actually have phone in hand right? I hear its fast as hell; wondering if thats what is causing the mem card error. Similer to when Win98 was shut down too fast? I wonder if putting in class 6 card would make the difference? With the autoterminator and all that? Again I don't have the phone in hand so I'm shooting in the dark. Also keep in mind just because it says that it is a class 6 does not mean it is as fast as some class 4-look at Sandisk Extreme cards....Hope it helps...will trouble shoot more on Friday when I get mine

"The Wonder Years" (1988) - Full cast and crew

I'm not that old... but I remember Ben Stien played the same type of roll in both..... rolls

Yes, you are correct, but I was referring to the Matthew Broderick film where Ben Stein said, "Buehler....... Buehler....... Buehler......." (I guess this distinction got lost in the combining of the two posts) my apologies.

So in the interest of fairness, I will concede a draw.....

And now back to our regularly scheduled programing, the soon to be released HTC EVO 4G...... Haha.....

As always, I remain, Patiently/Impatiently waiting for my HTC EVO 4G!

WSell i broke down and done it .. ordered both hubby and i a screen protector..Chose Zagg, what a good deal .. was going to go regular shipping and broke down and got ups ground ..:D

Just wanted to chime in on this thread as well. I got a call from the BB that I pre-ordered at and apparently they sold SO many pre-orders that they're allowing all the pre-order customers to come in at their convenience between Friday-Sunday to pick up their EVO and no matter what, pre-orders are guaranteed to get their phone anytime on those days.

Even better news is that they're opening early on Friday, which is great for me, since it'll allow me to pick up my phone before work and get to work in time for my Friday meeting! SO excited. 4 more days until a lot of us will have our EVOS!

Going to be a monthly $5 charge. No thanks, Qik.

And Fring just announced their support for the evo and doing video chat, and it can do it to Skype users.
When Sprint first showed us the EVO, I clearly remember them saying that the phone supported hot spot. Sprint conveniently (or not) forgot to tell us that there would be a cost associated with having the hot spot. $29.99 is cheaper than other alternatives, but it is still $29.99 more than free.

Then Sprint mentioned that the front facing camera would be able to be used with the Qik application. Here again, I don't remember Sprint saying anything about the $5 for using the Qik application.

I wonder what else Sprint is not telling us and will start charging for? They might even say that Froyo is there, but if you give $print $$, they will provide you with the means to update...

So I'm really not trying to beat a dead horse here... And believe me this horse has been shot, run over, and backed over several times but on the $10 EVO charge.... I read all these posts about how people called and asked for the account credit and I really wasn't sweating the $10 at all, like the rest of you I was accepting it as the cost of having 4g as well as 3g being uncapped. That said, I figured it couldnt hurt to call because after all not calling at all is like leaving money on the ground as your walking by. I called and didnt say "hey I know about the $10 credit", I didnt ask for retentions, and I also didnt ask for the credit at all. I simply called *2, chose the option for service disconnection and when the person came on the line, I asked how much it would be to cancel my service early. They asked why and I said that although I was very interested in the EVO, I was still torn between it and the iphone and that my friend informed me I would be paying an extra $10 for it per month. I said that I dont live in a 4g city, I shopped at&t's plans and that after my employer discount from them (lie), it would be cheaper for me to get the iphone than the EVO with the extra $10. After trying to just persuade me out of leaving by telling me the Evo's specs and what 4g will do for me when I get it she offered the $10 for 24 months. Again I know its a hassle but just so you people on the fence are aware, they will do this for you. Also.. Be nice. Again I'm sorry for backing over the poor horse again but I just want all my fellow forum members to save money with me :)
Mateo, I hope that when you see your first $print invoice, you will not see the $10. I just don't trust these reps any more. They say one thing and the invoice says something else. You might want ask the Rep if he/she can give you that $10 credit in writing.

Good point. The way I also see it, I think $10 is pretty small considering the cost to implement a 4G network across the country. They have to recover some of that too somehow right? But yeah excellent point. I'm paying it and moving on. It's ridiculous to complain about $10 a month when I'm pretty damn sure I spend $100 a month on starbucks trips. :p
The $10 is the fee Sprint is charging for the privilege/speed/power and the bragging rights to own the EVO phone. Why do people still think that this $10 has anything to do with 4G? Sprint can use the fee for whatever they may please. If it is used to expand the 4G coverage, then all the better.

Are we going to continue to have this thread open after June 4th? As this is a speculation thread, there shouldn't be much speculation going on once the phone is available to all, though we might still speculate on the "future" features of the EVO (like Froyo).

As for rumors, that will never die down. So I guess, I am might have answered my own question... This thread will still be there.

Qik isn't charged for. Further, what did you expect them to do? Destroy their Overdrive sales?

Also, very mature, replacing the S with $. Absolutely brilliant; I've never seen anything of the like before.

Lock this one and start a new one with a different title. EVO tips & tricks, pros & cons, questions & answers, or whatever makes a good post release title.

Patiently/Impatiently waiting for the HTC EVO 4G release.:)
