Important: Don't believe htc's website

I followed the advice on this page of HTC's website:

HTC Desire - Backing up phone data

i.e. that when performing a factory reset, that SMS messages would be restored.

So, I factory restarted my phone and waited for my texts to reappear. When they didn't, I phoned HTC.

It turns out that they accept that the information on their website is false. I've lost 3 years' worth of text messages and am absolutely furious.

I wanted to try and make sure as few people as possible suffer the same problem.
 
Just reimport them from the file you used to get them on the desire - as the desire's not been out for 3 years yet. ;)

I'd imagine that many questions asked on internet forums don't matter, but we ask them anyway because of natural Human curiosity.

Should we run all our questions through you first to filter out the ones you deem to be unimportant?

I would suggest that they are of sentimental value?

As suggested above can you not just reimport them again :)
 
wow, there is quite a bit of incorrect info on the HTC site, for example their helpful guide on how to change the lockscreen wallpaper...

Can you not take any further action, because if you keep them they must be important and it is HTC's fault they are gone. I'd begin with sending a written letter of complain together with an email. Physical letter is most important though.
 
Thanks for the responses (well, some of them).

I feared I had deleted the file that had allowed me to move them from my G1 to the Desire. Fortunately, I hadn't. So I've only lost 3 weeks' worth of messages. However, since I got engaged to my girlfriend in that period, I have lost of messages that did carry sentimental value.

I'm annoyed that I didn't use SMS Backup & Restore as I had previously but, call me naive, when the manufacturer of the handset tells you something, I believe them.

Anyway, as Yenzehn quite rightly pointed out, I posted this not to moan but rather in the hope that other people don't follow the same instructions.

O2's bluebook has come to my rescue, so all my messages are saved online. Forgot I'd signed up for that; glad I did.

@lekky - I will write to HTC to make a formal complaint. It's unacceptable really for a company to be passing out such dodgy information about one of its own products.

@Carbonangel - you sound very intelligent.
