Really, really good - but not great.

its faster than a 3gs. just not as smooth with certain things. im noticing some landscape keyboard lag and slight lag in other places. but thats not really the phones speed. thats most likely software issues. if the evo used the iphones software it wouldnt lag. hoping 2.2 fixes everything

Isn't there a froyo rom for the EVO Floating around somewhere? Maybe it's time to root and flash.

The one variable I totally forgot about, is that this phone is all OEM. Once rooted and modded w froyo, this should go from good to great - i hope. :)

iPhone 3G can multitask
Hmmmm... last time I checked I could not multitask with my 3GS. Perhaps yours is different?

I know with Android I can open up and play a game with music still playing in the background, then open up and check my twitter account with the music still playing the game still where I left it. Didn't know you could do that with an iPhone?

yeah, we were mentioning this issue a couple of weeks ago when ppl first started recieving their google I/O phones. The incredible is extremely smooth, the evo is smooth too, but there is a noticeable difference when swiping between home screens(smoothness and speed),scrolling, and pinch to zoom. Some of the "fluid" motion is lost. It really isn't a big deal for me personally, but it is noticeable. I wonder if this a software or hardware issue; the processor is supposedly the same. It could be due to all the extra stuff they jam packed into the phone.

In the short time it's been in my hands, it's made me a STAR among all my IPhone and Blackberry friends. They were all blown away by it in person. Even the boss, and nothing ever scratches that tough old boot.

You're right, it's not great.

It's awesome.

so then it can't multitask, it has to be modified.

If you're using that logic, any apps/mods that require root access to the EVO don't count toward goodness either. And we all know, once you root and flash a different rom on this device, it should make a substantial difference in the performance.

This is something that I've been stating for a really long time, but no one actually believed.

For some reason the iPhone's kinetic scrolling and animations are smoother. For example its like the iPhone is running at 60fps while other phones are at 30fps.

The 1ghz snapdragon is fully capable, which has led me to believe that the iPhone OS is either more efficient, or has better coding. The new iPhone HD is supposedly getting an A4, which should make this gap even more prominent.

Hopefully Google can optimize their OS, but as of now, the iPhone is unmatched when it comes to scrolling and transitions.

I was really curious about this and I'm glad I saw this thread. I'm an iPhone owner looking to switch to sprint. my iPhone is very smooth but the two android 2.2 phones I've seen on sprint (htc hero I think?) have serious lag issues. I would have thought this was te FIRST thing that would have been addressed..... in android 1.0.

like i dont care if my pc or mac has 1 billion programs is the mouse stutters a lot.

Just to be clear, the lag is only in scrolling, here, there, everywhere - home screen, app drawer, even the browser. The browsing experience is good, and with smooth scrolling it could beat the iphone browsing experience easily. It's not that the phone is slow or anything, the overall performance of the phone is great. It's just this one piece of code in the OS- scrolling - makes such a huge difference on how the phone feels.

Agreed except it's more like the iphone is at 30fps and android is @ 20fps. Maybe it's just my eyes, but 60fps and 30fps don't seem that different to me. I can tell under 30fps for sure though.

It's almost like the scrolling problem can be viewed in the same light as the 720p video out of the EVO. Great specs, but when it's in action it's missing frames. Come to think of it, I feel exactly about the 720p video, about how I feel about the scrolling.

It's still hard for me to believe some you guys think this thing is buttery smooth. Am I really missing something? The more I use it the more apparent it becomes.

Again really, really, really good. Just not great.

This is the best phone out. Funny how the forums always go to hell after a phone release.

The End!

I'm not sure it's a Google problem. Like I said the Incredible is very smooth. Don't know if you saw the link to the video I posted, but this guy thinks it beats the iPhone 3GS. Remember the Incredible is moving a lot more pixels too:
Droid Incredible vs iPhone 3GS Web Browsing

one more thing, it's very subtle. i think most people who understand HIDs can value this a lot. to the average person, everything is "buttery smoooooooth!!!!!!!!"

but really this extremely subtle difference has a very powerful affect on the end user.

Correct, this is the best user experience of any phone on the market. Faster than an iPhone and more customizable than a BlackBerry.

It's true. I'm an Android user, owned a G1, myTouch, Cliq, Hero, etc. and just now are phones starting to be able to compete with the original 2007 iPhone. That phone still has less lag than almost everything that's come out until now. It's pretty ridiculous but I'm glad that we're finally getting there. Don't get me wrong I still prefer Android, but it's amazing how long everyone else has to play catch up with 2007 technology.

Wait until Froyo hits this and the incredible. Everyone else will be playing catch up for the next 3 years. LOL

iphone scrolling is a tad better, so if that's the most important thing to you get an iphone, if you like being able to do well everything get a EVO

Y'all are TRIPPIN'!!! Buttery smooth over here!!! This phone has blown me away!!!

AMEN. The scrolling isn't laggy. Everyone complaining about "lag" has FAR too high expectations. Lag is one of the last words I would use when describing anything about this phone. To say this phone "lags" compared to the iphone is like saying a corvette is slow because its not as fast as an indy car. We understand that the iphone is the "class" of the smartphone industry. The Evo will never live up to the iphone, and I'm fine with that--I won't get called out for being a trendy hipster. 11 hours into my Evo experience and its a real treat.

The funny thing is it's not. Search youtube for iPad vs EVO. Even the iPad can't beat the EVO. The iPhone is pwnd.

I cannot wait to try FroYo out after seeing the benchmark improvements. I can't wait to see how it translates into real world use.
