Really, really good - but not great.

so then it can't multitask, it has to be modified.

unless you wait 72 more hours for iPhone OS4 to have multitasking done in a way that you don't have to manually kill stuff or poorly manage the battery.

Im so unsure about jumping from a 3GS to an EVO. BB is still holding my pre order but im waiting until Monday to see what Apple counters with first

I'm on my Evo now and didnt get much time on it earlier. The browsing experience certainly is better than any mobile device I've used to date. The lag is far less apparent, I guess I am just used to it now. I do have Sense on as well as a live wallpaper. Initially, i was under the impression that the Snapdragon would be able to handle that easily with no noticeable lag. It is very slight, but it certainly exists. I actually think this can be corrected with a software update.

I sold my iPhone 3GS to get the EVO. After reading the reviews over the last few weeks, I decided to hold off to really see what you guys (the real reviewers) say before I make my decision.

I'm sure you're going to think I'm an Apple fanboy, but I really did sell my iPhone to buy this phone.

From what I've read today:

1) SD Card issue (I think this has been fixed)
2) Camera Sucks (probably ok, but bad for an 8MP)
3) Video camera audio sucks (seen this first hand on youtube vids)
4) 4G Service/speed is crap in areas where it's supposed to be "Great"
5) Haptic Feedback not work for many users (see threads today)
6) Battery life is getting bad reviews
7) Problems obtaining IP Address in 4G areas
8) Lots of Qik issues
9) Washed Out Screen

Yeah, none of these are probably huge deals for most of you, but it's going to make me wait until I can at least play with a unit for awhile before I decide to get one.

And I went to two stores today and all they had was dummy phones...which brings me to another complaint about Sprint....sigh....

Anyone else agree?

Hands down, the best android phone on the market. Crazy specs, and everything seems to work well. The video chat apps are great, and android has a fairly large sized app catalog now - Although, in my opinion there are better apps for the iphone.

So after talking to my buddy about it, he said something that really has me thinking. We were talking about how this is one of the, if not most, responsive android phones out there - but even still, there's a minor lag to it. Don't get me wrong it's a very slight delay, but it not only is it during swiping home screens but also follows into the app drawer and others.

So anyways what he said was that this new (to us) technology is great, but it's still not as smooth as the old iPhone... and he's right.

The latest and greatest android device still isn't running as smoothly as my old iPhone 3GS. Obviously it has to do with a number of things, but i just can't help be bothered by it. Another example is scrolling - Sometimes when scrolling I'll end up selecting and opening something. Doesn't make sense to me at all, maybe I have to relearn how to scroll? Again don't get me wrong I think this is a really, really, really good phone.

Anyways I don't know who of you are coming from an iPhone, but I just thought I'd share. This is my 3rd android handset (hero, moment) and I think the OS is good....but there need some kinks worked out. Hopefully everything is better on Froyo. *crossing fingers*

/end rant.

Huh? The iPad loads the second page faster, it was already up and showing you the page. Just because the EVO finished the bar first doesn't mean it won. Really looked like a tie to me, which makes me impressed with the EVO for sure.

Kind of a biased test, IMO.

Biased my ass. The bar indicates that the Data is finished loading on the page. Do you want me to do ten more runs? Go back to macrumors or should I go there and post the video.

Evo is faster than iPad and the upcoming iPhone. Deal with it.

You can turn off sense? How is that done? More importantly (to me) can I uninstall the Sprint apps? I don't want the NFL (Football League), Sprint TV, or the Sprint Nav (Google Maps are SLICK). I assume that requires some sort of total device wipe? This sort of thing seems complicated!

1) SD Card issue (I think this has been fixed) OTA FIXED
2) Camera Sucks (probably ok, but bad for an 8MP) Take the plastic cover off

4) 4G Service/speed is crap in areas where it's supposed to be "Great" Speeds are great when you have coverage,
5) Haptic Feedback not work for many users (see threads today) Works for me
6) Battery life is getting bad reviews Much better than the reviews
7) Problems obtaining IP Address in 4G areas No problems
8) Lots of Qik issues FRING
9) Washed Out Screen In direct sunlight ..YES

I do agree with Sprint having dummy phones:confused:

.

I have done this 500 times today. Another thing I have been stressing over is when texting I go to hit spacebar with thumb, I am hitting < or something and words are screwy cause the cursor goes back one letter and now I am typing behind a letter. Agh! Then I have to go correct. I turned the prediction OFF...I hate that!
I will go on record and say the scrolling is not as fluid as the iPhone. I used to play with my buddies Hero and noticed that lag. I was hoping not to have it, but I do. I guess I just have to get used to it.

Here we go guys, the trolling has begun....GTFO

Someone having a different opinion than you is not "trolling". There seem to be just as many android "fanboys" as there are apple ones. These are two different platforms, suited to different people, and that's fine. You don't have to hate one to like the other. I've used every iPhone that's been released, and I've used even more android phones. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

One annoyance is the lack of bounce when scrolling and you hit the end. It just stops. The iPhone has a nice bounce to it to let you know you've hit the end. No bounce in Android.

I suppose I'll get used to it, but little things like that are the difference between elegance and clunkyness

2) Camera Sucks (probably ok, but bad for an 8MP)

Just an FYI that camera quality and Megapixels have no correlation. Megapixels is size.

Just look at all the 10+MP point & shoots on the market. Super high resolution images shot through terrible optics = high resolution crap.

Same thinking here. It's a phone though, not a dedicated camera, so I honestly don't mind.

I'm on an original iPhone 2G still, what a terrible camera :D

Oh FFS if you aren't a Troll I don't know what is. You have 30 DAYS to play with the damn phone. If you don't like it, you can return it and get your money back.

Please go back to macforums..

I'm not sure it's a Google problem. Like I said the Incredible is very smooth. Don't know if you saw the link to the video I posted, but this guy thinks it beats the iPhone 3GS. Remember the Incredible is moving a lot more pixels too:
Droid Incredible vs iPhone 3GS Web Browsing

I saw that video and it just convinces me that the iPhone handles scrolling better. It is true that the Incredible loads faster, but when you look at the scrolling, the iPhone has superior physics.

The reviewer states that the Incredible scrolls faster, but if you look at the iPhone, it mimics the acceleration of your finger. I don't know what Apple did, but their coding is vastly superior than other competitors.

I do a little bit of animation, and its similar to Easy Ease. Instead of speeding up and then to a dead stop, you ease into the speed, speed up, then ease out. This creates an organic feel that makes it butter smooth.

Biased my ass. The bar indicates that the Data is finished loading on the page. Do you want me to do ten more runs? Go back to macrumors or should I go there and post the video.

Evo is faster than iPad and the upcoming iPhone. Deal with it.

From that video the EVO is loading faster, which is great. But what many posters are attributing the speed to is the actual scrolling.

Look at the scrolling of the iPad vs EVO. The scrolling physics is superior. I'm beginning to think this is as a result of the talented engineers that Apple has on their iPhone OS team.

As an analogy, say if I threw a baseball. The harder I throw it, the faster it accelerates, then it slows down to a stop. If we were obeying the physics that Android has on its OS, the baseball would go from zero to fast then back to zero right away. With no transitions, or "Easy ease", it creates a sudden jerkiness.

This is why the EVO is fast, but it gives an impression of stutter.

I think animators would have an easier time understanding this. Another thing is snapping and stretching, such as a rubber band or a bouncy ball. So adding even more physics superiority, the iPhone adds this to their browser as well. When you reach the end of the page, it snaps back.

I know it may seem like I'm praising the iPhone, but I can really appreciate the genius behind the engineers who were able to create this super smooth physics engine. It has nothing to do with being bias, you can see it in action/results for yourself.

Ok, for arguments sake. We will say the iPhone "scrolls" better. It doesn't matter, the Evo still pwns it, in every other shape and form and remember we are talking about the yet to be released iPhone. Because it will be the one comparable to the iPad.

Either way the Evo wins. The End.

iphone vs android... reminds me of the grade school arguments of Ford vs Chevy, different strokes for different folks.

My EVO is on the way through FedEx and I can't wait to get my hands on it, but for the arguments specific to this thread about smoothness and scrolling, I had to chime in.

There are things Android does better than the iPhone OS and vice versa, but I had to give credit to the engineers who created the kinetic scrolling in the iPhone. So far it has not been recreated or done better by another competitor, so those software engineers should get the credit they deserve.

They are both great platforms. Apple is a bit more polished overall, but not necessarily better. Half the people in here are nuts and arguing stupid points. The Evo barley beat the Ipad , not really something to brag about or say my phone is better than yours. Calm down u nut cases LMAO

Someone else wrote this at a sports forum i visit and I thought it was interesting and applies to this discussion well I believe.

Yeah, I saw some of the video tests of flash running and while the flash itself seemed to play ok, it really slowed down everything else with the browsing experience if a flash element was loaded. Two things I was happy to see that they did - 1) make it a download from the market which makes updates much easier and faster to roll out, and 2) allow flash to be on-demand so that it doesn't automatically load the flash elements unless specifically requested so it doesn't slow down the browser loading flash ads or even other flash content the user isn't interested in seeing. This keeps the browsing speeds fast unless you want to watch something in flash.

To be honest, I don't think Android will ever be as smooth as Apple for one reason. They are focused on speed, while Apple is focused on the smoothness to the detriment of speed. I've played around with my wife's iPhone alot, mostly because I am trying to develop apps for Android (and some iPhone), but primarily Android. One thing that I have focused on is how smooth the Apple interface is. It's really remarkable. But pretty much every single app I test with both, opens and runs faster on Android. But when you're using the phones not side by side, the iPhone seems smoother and just as fast. The key, at least what I think is the key, are animations/transitions. Apple and Apple Developers incorporate a ton of SLOW animations into their apps. They look great, they provide great eye candy, and most importantly, they make the user forget they are waiting. It also provides an extra little bit of time for the phone to perform/complete whatever actions/tasks it is being asked to perform. I know they do this and it still works on me because everything seems to run smoother. Android and Android Developers typically use minimal animations or transitions.

Its much the same with a Mac. When you close a document, it (relatively) slowly sucks down into the icon at the bottom of the screen like a genie going into a bottle. On Windows, it closes with a very minimal animation. It doesn't look nearly as cool, and in fact, in comparison, it looks clunky and abrupt. But its just as fast or faster. The Apple Developer's Guidelines stress using animations to convey information to the user. It also provides that if your program appears idle for more than 2 seconds, the operating system will take over and perform some action on the screen to keep the user engaged. So if your program takes 5 seconds to load, and you don't provide some sort of eye-candy (albeit helpful eye-candy because it tells you the computer is working), then Apple will do it for you.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you can easily see what I'm describing. If you don't, watch the iPad commercial closely next time, and when they turn it to the side, watch how SLOWLY it rotates to the landscape view. Its almost comical.

I'm not a big fan of how Apple does a lot of things, but what they are able to do with animations to improve the user experience is unbelievable.

Anyways, those are my thoughts having played around alot with the iPhone and several different Android phones.
