EVO Spontaneously Combusted - No Joke

Well....where else but here to share my disaster story.

I was one of the first in Nashville to receive my phone after preordering at bestbuy. Got it Friday morning and spent all day Friday and most of Saturday playing around with it. Saturday night i was fiddling with the front facing camera to see what sort of photos it took, and i hit the shutter button and then it happened!

Literally - a flash of smoke and a spark with this unforgettable sound of cracking glass. Some sort of short has caused my main speaker (the earpiece) to completely fail, the front facing camera no longer works, and there is a diagonal crack from the Sprint logo at the top right down about 1/3 of the way down the screen on the left side.

Called Best Buy, and they're going to replace it, as soon as they get more in. Oh well. Everything else works, so i'll be using a lot of speakerphone until the replacements arrive.

Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are VERY explosive. I use them regularly in R/C helicopters and they are 1/5 the capacity of the EVO battery. They swell up to almost 2x their size after too many recharge cycles. iPhone uses the same battery. A couple people were burned when they "exploded" internally. The case can also get VERY hot. Have you read the warning on the battery? These batteries are not allowed loose in airplane luggage any longer due to the nature of them. There are a number of videos like this on Youtube.

iPhones have gone up in smoke as well. Someone was burned from one. It was shortly after the 3G was released. Pictures were all over the web. The LiPo batteries can be pretty dangerous. The guy got some good "stuff" from Apple.

I find it funny how many incidents are attributed to Apple or Apple "fanboys." I'm a 3GS user test-driving an EVO and am amazed at how much the iPhone gets talked about on this forum. You know, bad things do happen to other phones without it being a part of some larger conspiracy by Apple or its "fanboys."

Grow up. Enjoy your EVO. It's a great phone. Stop being insecure.

I had my Evo get very very hot(thread: Hot Hot Battery). Thankfully it didn't explode. I'm going to Sprint today and try and get a replacement battery.

Be careful with the battery only method. If the battery got hot enough it could have loosened some internal connections causing them to fail over time.

So for all those non believers out there - i couldn't make this stuff up if i tried. I've taken these photos with my webcam on the my laptop, so they're not great, but you can see what is what. The black streak is me blacking out a portion of the reflection of my laptop screen.

Picture one - overview that shows all the damage including the scratch across the screen.

Picture two - Close up of the earpiece and the Zagg protector by the camera. You can see the discoloration on the silver earpiece where it sparked and smoldered, and the Zagg has literally melted right by the camera.

For those commenting - it's not the battery. I can turn on the phone and use almost all of it still. The front camera is blown, but the screen and radios still work, I can use the navigation and internet, etc. I can't get to the back camera, because use the screen on the front camera to switch which one it uses, but everything else works fine.

The biggest issue, as it's a work phone for me, is the earpiece not working, so i have to use the speakerphone every time i need to make or receive a call. Best Buy has already agree to replace it, just waiting on a new shipment to come in.

Dude - I'm glad that you and others commenting about being an Apple Fanboy feel important enough to make claims about my allegiances when i come to post what i consider an amazing and somewhat amusing story.

I've been a Sprint customer for 10+years, I've been waiting for this phone since before you probably even new existed, and can't stand Apple, the iphone, ipad, i-whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it. So take your name calling somewhere else.
