Droid Tethering

Tested as of now on my droid and it works and its an awesome program! Just remember, in the fine print it says your "Unlimited Data" plan is really limited to 5 gigs a month, an amount which can be used up very quickly by a tethered pc.

Goodluck!

Could someone explain this part to me? I don't quite understand.

Technically Unlimited Data means... Unlimited Data. But that comes with the assumption that the end-user will use it for what the contract covers which is email, web browsing, app downloads, and apps by Verizon (ie. VZ Navigator). If you use it excessively, they can tell if you're using it for other purposes.

In the contract it says that one sure way to tell you're using it for non-covered reasons (like tethering or p2p) is if you use more than 5GB/month.

I'm hoping that, since I didn't change my plan, they won't say anything to me about tethering. I checked my usage this morning and I've used nearly 2 gigs so far this month. I'm still on my old alltel plan with dirt cheap truly unlimited data.

One thing is certain: tethering with the droid and pdanet through usb is faaaaaaast. I hope they release a bluetooth connection option soon.

I got it tethered on Windows 7 using PDAnet and got the following results....

Sure beats anything I had on AT&T.

Today I've had 4 times when the Internet quit. It said I was still connected but nothing would load.

After unplugging the USB and plugging it back in (clicking connect) I was right back online.

Anyone else?

Here are my speeds.

These results are from home, but downtown I was able to hit 2Mbps...to bad I don't have a screenshot. Anyway, PDAnet is working beatifully and will enable me to do homework when we visit family out in the sticks!

Why would you want to tether it wirelessly? That's going to be a security issue and a speed issue I'd imagine... And if you're going to say "so more than one device can tether to it" then that's going to get your plan flagged for sure.

Because I have enough cables in my life. For the once or twice a month that I actually need to do this, I don't want to have always have a cable available.

If you're going to tether wirelessly, you will burn through your battery:

* EVDO being used more often will use power
* The bluetooth/wifi connection will use power
* You won't be recharging through the USB

Yes, it would be convenient, but only for short periods.

I just want to confirm that PdaNet does infact work with the Motorola Droid. If you would like to tether follow these simple steps:

For 32-bit Windows(xp/vista/7) download this installer:
http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/PdaNetA201.exe

For 64-bit Windows(xp/vista/7) download this installer:
http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/PdaNetA201.exe

Follow the instructions of the installer:
Don't have your Droid connected until told to do so.

Don't rush through the installer and read the instructions.

My setup was Moto Droid w/Win7 64bit w/PDANet and it works flawlessly.

Any questions PM me or google PDANET.

So do you download this on your laptop rather than on the droid?

If so, this leads to a further question:

I tether now using my rooted G1 (I only use tethering for an emergency backup when my broadband is down). I have both a laptop and a netbook. If after the trial period for pdanet, I pay the $30 for it, can I use it on both my laptop and netbook? Or would I have to buy it twice, once for the laptop and once for the netbook?

Is there any way, other than excess data usage, that VZ would be able to detect that one is tethering occasionally with the droid. (I only tether occasionally as a backup).

This is how you tether your droid with your laptop...step by step.

1) Purchase PDAnet for android at PdaNet -- Use your Android as a USB Modem

2) Download and install motorola usb drive on the laptop and restart laptop.
USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola USA

3) Install PDAnet on laptop and follow instructions exactly as it prompts.

Thats it. PDAnet will not work if you do not install motorola usb drivers first.

Works with my droid and Windows 7 like a charm.

I have both a laptop and a netbook. Right now when I tether occasionally, sometimes I use one, sometimes the other.

So my question in this thread was, and still is:
Using PDAnet, once I purchase it, can I install it on both my laptop and my netbook? Or would I have to purchase it twice?

I was getting blown away by 7 Mbps downloads and 2-3 Mpbs uploads. I double checked that I had disconnected my local connections to the laptop. Turned out, the culprit was I had the phone tethered to the WiFi network and it was using that for data transfer instead of the 3G. Makes sense, but I was a bit confused for a couple minutes.

Here's the real results!

Thanks for the work on this. Any ideas when the trial period expires? I'm using version 2.02 PR as that was the latest on the website now.

I only downloaded the 64 bit driver (I'm running 64-bit Win 7 Pro) that was in the first section of that download page. I did not download or install either of the drivers shown here. I agree that the page seems a bit confusing and no specific references to Droid. I had no problems charging or running PDAnet as a trial download.

In regards to the 5 gig montly limit. Can someone give an example of what activities would use over 5 gigs when tethering? The wife and I would like to watch some hulu when we are visiting family who do not have cable. Thanks
