For phone: a pretty basic Nokia flip top cell phone ... using AT&T Mobile
For keeping track of contacts, calendars, notes: a Palm T/X
For accessing internet on the go: a laptop
Now I can do all of the above (and more) on the Droid.

Hahaha, I know! I feel your pain, brother. I'm glad this place is like an ex-Windows Mobile user support group.
if you see him, tell chris tinker that jeff in denver says hello. We worked together in chandler dts.

I had a Nokia N95,.

I had a Nokia N95, then I went to an iPhone 6 months ago, after 4 replacements, I got sick of it failing on me and switched to Sprint using the HTC Sprint Hero. That was too laggy for me, and I turned it in just a day before my 30 day return policy was up, switching to Verizon and the Droid.
So far, Verizon has been so-so for me. Much better than AT&T, but about comparable to Sprint in terms of sound quality, though they have much better coverage in my area.
But other than the slide-out keyboard, everything you mentioned is more on the "software" side. The hardware is more than capable of doing all of the things you've mentioned--the camera included--but the software isn't all there yet to bring it out.I don't think it's "that bad" at all.
My problems with it though is that it feels very sluggish in comparison to the 3GS. The finger tracking and kinetics are quite crude in comparison to the silk of the 3GS. Combine that with the slide-out keyboard (which should have just been left out, imho) and lack of multitouch out of the box and you get a 70/100 in my book. Certainly better than average, but nothing ground-breaking.
Edit: Forgot to mention the camera...we'll just leave it at that...
