I have 4G! Just walked out of the office on 42nd street and I turned on the 4g scanner. Picked up one bar right away. I was with a colleague at the time but I was able to do a couple speeds tests. 2.48MBs was the highest but the upload speed was bad for some reason. I streamed some sprint tv and it looked great.

I lost the 4g service once I got back into my building. If I have time later today, I'll stream the Spain vs Honduras game in 3G, then go outside and stream it in 4G for a good comparison.

Glad it's finally getting rolled out!

I get about 1 radiating 4G bar inside the family room facing south in Bluemont (about half a mile west of Ballston), and 1 radiating bar if I am within 5 feet of the window on the second floor of my office downtown right at 12th and G Streets, Metro Center. Beyond 5 feet, I still get a weak 4G signal for about another 5 feet (no radiating bars, but 4G indicating still lights up). Then beyond that, nothing.

I can get a signal on the 4th floor of my office in Greenbelt MD near a window, but when I move to the middle of the building, I cannot get anything. Nice and fast when I do have it though, 7 mpbs down and 1 mpbs up.

I started a thread a few days ago, So far i have consistent 4g in Woodside Queens where i live, but at work in midtown i have not gotten a signal as of yet.

Picked up 4G today at grassmere park, and 65N to 440W today. They are definitely lighting up more towers everyday, although like people are saying there is definitely a lot of adjustment and flickering going on of the signal! They need to make an app that we can run to help them show where the signal is reaching via a GPS heatmap. That would probably acclerate the process, and we would be happy to program and/or run it here!

I got a very strong signal at Nationals Park the other day... Everywhere else in DC proper has been patchy (to put it kindly). I also get a weak signal in Glover Park...

Nice! What type of speeds are you getting with your 4g signal?

I just went for another walk around the block to compare the world cup game on 4G but unfortunately I wasn't able to get a 4G signal this time. :(

1) Is 4G really only marginally faster?

From what I understand, Sprint's 3G should "peak" around 3Mbs download on 3G, and 6-8Mbs on 4G, but theoretically could be 10Mbs+...at least that's how I read it on the website.

Based on various reports on this forum, and tech sites, it seems like the 4G signal is kind of fragile, and very susceptible to interference. Your connection speeds will probably be inconsistent in downtown areas, if Sprint does not continue to sure up your location(s), and you lack line of sight to a tower/antenna.

Just for comparison's sake, and not trying to start conflict as I'm genuinely interested in the WiMax tech, but I'm up in Columbia and live only 3mi from a spot where I got 7.44Mbs on T-Mo's "3.5G"...there are pretty much no "skyskrapers" in the area, which is also pretty much flat, but I only get ~900Kbs on average, despite "full bars" 3G/3.5G. So if you're only able to manage 1-2 bars 4G, those 2-3Mbs speeds seem about right, and should only improve as you get a better connection.

Yeah I got it for the first time yesterday. I got 4G signal in two different places:

1. 42nd St and 3rd Ave.
2. 34th St and 1st Ave (But only once I got to my friends apt on the 33rd floor. Street level offered no 4G here.)

Oh and before I left the place at 34th street I was able to get a new speed of 2.9MBS.

I had a full 4G signal at the corner of Old Hickory Blvd and Nolensville RD in Antioch. I was at the Enterprise Car Rental place and gave it a try. Thought I would give a heads up if somebody wanted to try it out.

Sorry if this has been asked already but I couldn't find an existing thread.

Does anyone have any educated guesses on when we'll have 4G access in New York? I'm in Manhattan and I'm patiently waiting. Ok not THAT patiently.

The people at the Sprint store won't commit to any dates. They we'll have it "some time this summer". Anyone else know more?

Thanks!

Don't know how reputable this answer is, it came from the rep at Radio Shack who didn't know 99% about the Evo when I got it. Apparently through that rep was the only one who had "undergone training" for selling the Evo in the store and I was told sometime next year for 4G in NYC.
