They're so nice. BJ from my local Sprint Authroized Retailer (not corporate) just called to inform me that I have a Hardware version 0004 Evo replacement waiting for me. He's going to hold it till friday when I can go pick it up. :D

Corporate is owned by Authorized Retailers when it comes to CS.

Agree. When I first went to look at Sprint (right before the EVO came out) I was helped by a very nice salesperson who didn't approach me like a car salesman. When I cam back I decided to wait for her since I wanted to make sure she got credit for the sale. She apologized for the wait ( she was helping a family of 4 switch over from VZW). I told he I wanted the EVO and she told me she would get me one the next day (even though they have a waiting list). In addition, she couldn't remember what employer discount she had given me before so she just gave me the largest one she could. Just awesome service!

So there's a version 0004 now?

How do you determine a particular phone is version 1, 2, 3, 4, ... ? Is there some part of the serial number or model number of the phone that reveals this?

I spoke with the manager of a local Sprint store, and he did not seem to be aware of different versions.

yes please inform about this version 4?

Just means it is the 4th revision or build run of the phone. Sometimes minor changes are made to improve the hardware. Versions 1,2, and 3 were shipped on release. Changes will be minimal and it is not something to worry about.

When version 002 and 003 have issues, 004 might be more then minimal!

To OP. This is the first I heard of version 004. You sure this guy knows what he is talking about?

Instead of a particular date of manufacture, I assume that HTC merely establishes version numbers for internal quality control. In fact, if there are different manufacturing plants, I would imagine that each is issued different version numbers. Any differences within the phone hardware comes as a result of normal production changes and quality improvement as the phone production matures.

When a new version is released, the phone doesn't magically change at that point. If production changes are made, they would be implemented as phone parts are replenished. It would be silly to expect that a version number has any particular importance other than to easily pinpoint when (and perhaps where) the phone was produced.

I would think that the reason someone would want a higher version number is to increase the odds of owning a phone that was assembled with a bit more practice. From what I have seen, there has been NO difference between the parts of the various versions other than normal production variances. (For instance, a different hue to the back cover.)

version 3 is flawless here. Not a hint of light leakage or anything. did the "couch test" and all. Basically, I tried to find something wrong with it and I failed. Very happy EVO owner. :)

two things that bother me are:
1. the back battery cover not being flush on one side
and
2. the fact that the screen has some play when I push it in on the capacitive buttons area.

other then that I'm good.

is it worth trying to get another one to fix these issues? how do you go about doing that? open every box until you find one that is defects free?

Any update on your experience with your new v0004 EVO? Were you able to pick it up yet and check it for some of the issues noted with the other versions?

Thanks!

Got mine last week & I have v3, none of those issues here. Very happy, plus the Commerce Sprint store (East Los Angeles) was awesome & Christine there hooked me up well.
