samsung stratosphere

I keep losing 3g coverage and I have to robot my phone and I know it is not a dead zone bc I get it all the time I think it is verizon..... any ideas

I am traveling to Jamaica and also to Asia and would like to be able to use SKYPE when I have wifi service available. Can I do this with a Stratosphere SCH-I405.EI2? If so, can you help me figure out how> Thank you! Greg
