144 gig Note 2 ;)

Just got the 64 gig flash drive at radio shack for $40 i had to root it to run ntfs

I'm running a 500GB exFAT formatted external HDD with my Note 10.1 without root. However, it requires external power source to work. I'm hoping the Note 2 will work with it if I decide to get it next year.

My Note 5.3 doesn't recognize exFAT. I could always reformat my HDD back to FAT32 for greater compatibility between my Note 5.3 and 10.1.

It'll work, I've used a 2TB external drive with my Note 2.

Note 2 has exFAT support, so no worries there. Original Note didn't have it, the S3 was the first.

Yeah, I'm already aware of that. Just not ready to root my Note yet. The Note 5.3 is my first Android phone and the Note 10.1 is my first Android tablet. I'm still getting acquainted with Android.

At least exFAT is an option for those who don't want to root.
 
The size of the USB flash drive or external HDD shouldn't matter. It's the file format you have to pay attention to. The Note 2 supports FAT32 and exFAT natively without root. NTFS can only be supported if rooted.

Good. Then I should be able to use this. Have had it for a few years and it's in the correct format.
It's a Samsung Pleomax 120 External HD.

As long as you are using exFAT or FAT32. Also, make sure you have the power adapter for the HDD or it won't work. The Note 2 will not have sufficient power to operate the HDD on its own.

I'm using a 2.5" Seagate Momentus XT 500GB HDD slapped into an external USB/eSATA enclosure. I stripped it out of my aging notebook that broke. It's worked with my Note 5.3 (FAT32) and Note 10.1 (exFAT). I think I'll see how it handles partitions (one in FAT32; other in exFAT). Should prove to be an interesting project.

And be able to be powered by the Note? Currently not a possibility as it'll kill the battery fairly quickly.

Edit: here are shots to compare my external HDD to the Note (in an Otterbox Commuter case) and Note 10.1 (in Yoobao Executive Leather case). The keyboard is a wired USB, hence that little white wire sticking out. :p
