How long should it take for the 1st charge on the battery for this device?

A couple hours, at most. It should be about half charged out of the box, and charging the rest of the way isn't too much of a chore.

Thanks. My son got a new phone because he lost his old one (and then it got ran over by a car). He claimed the battery wasn't charging. It seems to have charged now. What he didn't tell me he was using the phone while trying to charge it.
