2.1... Confirmed!!

Just saw this update today and am happy to pass it along :) :

Issue: Unable to download incoming picture notifications
Impacted Phones: HTC Hero™
Fix: Fix will be part of a maintenance release tentatively scheduled for 4/9/10

Notice it says *TENTATIVELY*. This is all the info I have, I assume it will be released for the Moment the same date. If I hear another date, I'll pass it along.

Shit, by the time Sprint gets done with their 2.1 update, they might already have a 3.0 available.

So it was March (thats what a rep told me in February), next its april, then may, then june, then it gets pushed back again to around next year... Words can't even describe how irritated I am by this... All the apps I have now have 1.6+ versions available and I can't even touch them thanks to sprint...

And the sad thing is, HTC already has a phone coming out with 2.1 loaded on it. There are even videos on youtube of Sense UI with the official 2.1 update. So how or why sprint is taking so long is beyond me... They can keep their crappy applications... But if I find out that they are waiting until their "remove tethering" update comes in affect, I will be even more pissed lol.

There is also NO way in hell I will take my phone to a sprint store to load a android update on it. Mine is rooted, im just waiting until its release so I can update it that way.

But if we seriously have to go to sprint to update our phones, then that is a bit ridiculous...
If you're rooted, why does any of this bother you? Flash DamageControl or one of Flipz' 2.1 releases (which will work with the full Fresh Kitchen almost immediately after the release drops), and you're golden. They're fast, 99% fully functional, and 100% stable. The only thing missing is VVM, and they work fine as a daily driver. The only reasons I wish 2.1 would drop sooner than later is having VVM again, and more importantly to me, the ease and simplicity of cooking, tweaking, and maintaining 2.1 ROMs via the Kitchen.

Why do you insist only on the Sprint release, that might very well be patched to plug and seal your ability to root? If wireless tether was the single, only benefit to be gained from rooting, I would stay rooted and avoid Sprint's release for that reason alone.

Dick (1:34pm): Good afternoon sir, can I help you.

Mark (1:34pm): Yes, I have a problem. I purchased a Sprint Hero with the understanding that it will be upgraded to Android 2.1. This is important because 1.5 is a truly awful version that doesn't allow me to do anything. I can't make calls, I can't run apps and it takes several hours to boot up. I didn't know any of this before I bought it (that would have required me to research my purchase, which clearly isn't reasonable). I understand that the upgrade to 2.1 will automate all my calls (I no longer need to speak to anyone, which - for a geek like me - is perfect), it will run all apps (from Android, IPhone or the huge Windows Phone Marketplaces). I also believe it will start in 0.0000023 seconds and deliver a health care reform package which everyone will enjoy and celebrate together in peaceful harmony. So, I am quite interested in when it will be available.

Dick (1:35pm): Hold on sir, I will check.

Dick (1:38pm): I am pleased to tell you I have an answer, sir. The update will be available.

Mark (1:40pm): Yes?

Dick (1:41pm): Yes, that's right sir - it will be available. Isn't that exciting?

Mark (1:41pm): When?

Dick (1:42pm): It will be exciting when its available.

Mark (1:43): Can you give me a specific date?

Dick (1:45pm): No, I am afraid not. But I can assure you sure that Sprint has stopped development of all other phones and will be delaying the release of the 4G phones for 6 months while it works on the Hero 2.1 upgrade. We understand the pure agony of using 1.5 and we're surprised you stuck with us this long. With version 1.5 on it the Hero is obviously akin to a wet potato and makes calls just as well. Obviously when you signed up we told you what a sucky phone it was and made promises that the upgrade would be available just a day or so after you bought it (although we didn't consider the health care thing, so that's adding a day or two - Obama has been slow to help with the beta testing). So, sorry about that.

Mark (1:47pm): I am speechless. I am now making a threat to you!!! I will personally promise to call every single Sprint representative until it is released. I have all their personal phone numbers. I'll keep doing this until the release is available, even if it takes me well into April. And if it ships in April then clearly it will have been my pressure that did the trick. And I am serious - calling endless numbers of Sprint folks is clearly a winners game. And I have the time - it's not like I have a life or anything. This is clearly the most important thing to me (if that health care thing doesn't work out, don't delay shipping the update - that's a nit compared to getting the update to me).

Dick (1:49pm): OK, sir. Thank you. Rest assured the company is quaking in its boots and we'll do everything we can to get this to you very soon.

As a high school teacher that works with kids that don't give a crap and see school as a social event ... (which, as you can imagin makes it very painful to teach) ... THANK YOU FOR THE LAUGH. Really. :D

Ack.... tomorrow is March 26! The original release date for 2.1!

Q: Will we get it? Will we have to wait for sometime in April? What do we do???

A: Keep you pants on and wait.

Ok people...

We all know we cannot trust these low-level online chat employees what are sitting over in India, with fake screen names. They just tell us whatever the hell they want to. Everyone's responses are different.

Are people really this dumb? All you have to do is READ! It clearly says the update is a fix for the picture messaging problems. It does NOT mention a 2.1 update anywhere!

The bad news is if they were planning to have 2.1 out soon, they wouldnt bother with this fix. Looks like we may see that Evo before the Hero sees a 2.12 update...

Like i said before. In February it was supposed to be released in march. Now in march its supposed to be April. I bet april turns into may...

If you're rooted, why does any of this bother you? Flash DamageControl or one of Flipz' 2.1 releases (which will work with the full Fresh Kitchen almost immediately after the release drops), and you're golden. I wasn't aware that the 2.1 rom had Multi-Touch and landscape view when at the home screen. Or whether it fixed any problems we have now with our hero's. But its not really the rooting part im concerned about. Its about sprint not working harder on the update that we were supposed to have last year. They didn't even finish a 1.6 update... I can only imagine how long it will be for them to give us an update when 3.0 comes out...

They really aren't giving android the attention it deserves in my eyes...

ANDROID FTW!

Like i said before. In February it was supposed to be released in march. Now in march its supposed to be April. I bet april turns into may...

Sounds like classic Sprint shenanigans to me. I remember the Samsung Instinct was supposed to get an app store...Sprint actually said it would...then it reneged. Nice.

Except there has never been anything OFFICIAL stating any specific month... it gets here when it gets here.
