More 2.1 half rumors

Meteor is a mobile operator probably selling branded (=software customized for the operator) Hero. HTC usually makes the new software for the unbranded version first, then for the branded ones.

No, i'm with meteor. They sell unlocked unbranded white(bill pay) phones.
They got word straight from HTC saying end of March. And HTC said it will be available via the HTC website.

Not to add to the confusion, but i stumbled upon this article: HTC Hero's Android 2.0 update pushed back to March | Electronista

The part I'm confused about is this:
"HTC has likely pushed back an update to Android 2.0 for the Hero to March. A contact from Irish carrier Meteor says HTC has had to spend time integrating its Sense UI front end with the new Google OS and that it now expects the upgrade to arrive in March. Android 2.1 also isn't immediately in the cards."

Waaaaaaait a minute... wasn't the next Update supposed to be to Android 2.1? Or did I just get it wrong?

If you find the link to the forum (possibly from the android guys website) you'll see the guy from Meteor corrects himself a few posts down after posting that saying it will indeed be 2.1.

Edit - In fact also from the link you provided, and I quote:

"Hi,

Just got another update on this and HTC have said they are releasing 2.1 on the Hero and we are hoping to have this availible by the end of March.

This will be available via the HTC website and we are also looking at other ways to make this update easier to access for our customers. As soon as I hear any more on this I'll let you all now becuase I know the release of 2.1 is something that everyone is looking forward to.

Thanks

Okay. That more like it. Didn't follow the links in the article. Guess I was just too shocked ;)

Haha, easily done! But it is good news if true... I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath. It does leave you a little wary after all the rumours and 'promises'. As someone else said in another thread, first it was before Christmas, then January, then February, now March... what next? Will it ever arrive? Granted, much of it has been just rumours and HTC are not committed to updating blahblahbladda etc etc.

I think we're victims of our own enthusiasm and should just calm down a bit. Lets all 'av a nice cuppa tea an' a sit down. It'll arrive when it arrives...

Most sensible thing written on the topic!

.......we do like a rumour though don't we....... ;)
I'd like to agree with the "being patient" bit, but being stuck on 1.5 is resulting in a gradually mounting list of incompatible apps/app updates. This makes things somewhat more frustrating than just waiting for a new ROM version. Accepted though that there is nothing more we can do, but where else can we have a moan?

To be fair to HTC, the only thing they ever said was "we are working on it", I think the dates were all just rumours by us ;D

To those having a moan about HTC and their android updates, you are in the land of bullshit-full nod, where eagles lay gold and badgers dance to the rythm of the beatles....

Seriously, Look at any other manufacturer, where the hell are their updates? and Come on, its fairly certain that SE's first Android attempt, the X10 will LAUNCH with android 1.5, months after 2.0 was available as an SDK...

As far as i've seen, Samsung, Motorola and the other Android contenders have had virtually zero updates, certainly nothing to the tune of an entire os edition upgrade...

I feel happy and lucky to be the owner of a HTC Hero rather than the Samsung Galaxy for example..

Agreed.. We, the users, have become accustomed to "free" upgrades to the products we buy. And luckily most manufacturers supply these upgrades for us. A couple of years ago, if you bought a cellphone, you had no hope of an upgrade if the cellphone were faulty.

The thing that bothers me is not that Im "still" running an old version of Android. It is more the fact that HTC makes promises of future updates, and then keeps pushing the release dates further and further. It would have been better if they didn't make promises and just made new releases as a surprise or if they dropped Sense and just released the Hero with default Android OS, so that the users could just update themselves whenever a new OS became available.

Just my 2 cents :)

To all those having a go at the "moaners" - the point is that without the update, because of the way Google are developing Android, we are losing out on new app functionality. I would have no problem waiting for 2.1 or even staying on 1.5, but we need updating to be compatible with new apps coming out - and this incompatibility will increase the longer we have to wait. This applies to any Android phone, not just HTC's.

Never mind new apps.... I purchased DroidLive (excellent 'net radio app btw) but can't reinstall it after a wipe 'cos it's been 'updated'. :(
Yeah Slug - further back up this thread I said "apps/app updates" - the updating of existing apps further adds to the problem of being stuck on 1.5. I just noticed that Fotmob 4.0 is no longer being updated for 1.5 - they are only supporting the newer (incompatible) one. This can only get worse each week we are held back, and IMO is as much a flaw in Android's way of "locking people out" each time we move to a new version as HTC's fault in keeping up with it.
