2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

I asked the vzwsupport rep about the pinch to zoom not working on the ota, as some who have gotten the ota claim, and he stated that the pinch to zoom function is part of the update. I have a feeling we will be getting a second patch to fix things in the ota.

people have gotten it. unfortunatly most of us were not tech savey enugh to log it

+1
In addition to that, of the few people here who have received it, some received it before directions were posted.
Then clearer directions were posted, and those who received it after that didnt seem to see those posts, and still didnt know you should share.
As for myself,I have not received the OTA yet but I downloaded SDK to prepare to share when it happened. However I gave up on it. I found SDK to be very frustrating to set up on my computer.

I dont believe the guy you spoke with. They are always behind on getting the current information. He probably knew of the original pdf, but did not see the changes made to the knew one.
However I do think there will be a patch. If not because of pinch being absent in google maps, at least for the signal glitch. That is kind of a big deal.

See I doubt the signal glitch will get fixed because it is present on the incredible as well. hopefully the 50% time w/o signal is at least fixed in the ota.

(forgive me if we're talking about the same glitch, I took your post to mean the signal bars glitch)

Hey... Thanks OTD, I can now post...

Now for the reason I'm posting... I used to do third party tech support for Verizon internet and if VZW is anything like it's sister company the people answering the phone are by and large nine dollar an hour people who are given the occasional handout. Many of the frontliners are either new graduates who need a foothold into the industry or are McDonalds rejects who can't find anything better. Their job is to get you off the phone in 13 minutes or less. Take whatever they say with a big grain of salt.

I have been following this thread allll day long, hoping someone would post the link for the OTA...and i just find it really odd that with all the people that are following this thread, and all the other related threads on various android sites, none of us have received the OTA yet, and have been able to post the link. I know that if I ever receive the OTA I will do my best to share the link, just because I know what a pain it has been to sit here and wait for it. So hopefully some time soon....someone will share the link...or ill get it! :)

For crying out loud, how old are you? Six? Verizon has barely started the OTA process, and in fact if they are following previous patterns only 2,000-3,000 people have gotten the OTA so far. Of that number, how many do you suppose are on this forum.

In order to avoid bandwidth issues it is likely that the largest numbers to receive the OTA will be during the wee hours. The OTA will probably peak around 2-3 AM in the morning.

Be patient, just like Christmas the OTA will eventually arrive. In two months everyone will be whining about not being able to get 2.3, and none of this will even matter.

I'm not angry because I expected v3 to be OTA, but why did they post crap in the .pdf that isn't on the ROM? I know...I've read people who believe that it's a miracle that all of the departments worked together to get the update out. Well, God bless us! Eris users are obviously the chosen ones!

What about voice to text? That is still on the PDF and it is NOT in the 2.1 v3 leak.

Bandwidth isn't the problem. It's a controlled release - several thousand at a time with that number increasing with each passing day. People can be pissed all they want. For the most part, people just don't want to wait for the OTA and would rather see someone log the file and share the download link with the community.

That is the ultimate source of frustration right now - it is here, but not everyone has it. It is knowing what you are getting for Christmas but not being able to open it for 24 hours. (Or longer)

If VZW were really smart they would provide a P2P link so everyone can get the file without loading their servers. This is what Blizzard does for their videos.

VZW owns the network the files are moving across, Blizzard doesn't. They slowly roll out the patches the same way a company does with Windows updates, Test group then slowly deploy across the network. 1,000 pissed off customers is better than 100,000, if they crash the phones or a unknown compatibility exists.

So I woke up today and looked at my phone. I seen an update icon and was super excited that I had received the OTA... only to fin it was Google Maps wanting to update.

I damn near cried. Such a tease.

If it's anything like the other Android releases, the 77mb file is actually coming from android.clients.google.com, which is on Google's servers. Granted, it's still going through Verizon's servers to reach the phone in 3G mode.
