2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

If the OTA has the same issues as the leaks that some people have and you return your phone for a replacement...do you have to have an insurance plan of some type or does the actual phone have some sort of warranty? I paid full price for my phone to get away from a storm but did not go with any of the insurance plans. just wondering if I am up a creek or not.

Just a theory, but I think a bad phone on 1.5 may equal a bad phone on 2.1. The OTA may fix issues for some people, like the MR1 and MR2 updates did, but I am thinking more and more that a bad phone is just a bad phone.

If you look at those of us that have never really had an issue on 1.5 or any of the leaks (minor bugs yes, real issues no) we are all either very accepting people or we just have phones that work right. There will always be bugs in any software, but I really think that the major problems that a smaller percentage of users have are not going to just disappear with the OTA.

Please understand that this is just a theory on my part.

The phone comes with a 1 year warranty against defects which includes software. I think VZW will only honor that if it was purchased at an authorized retailer though.

My phone was flawless on 1.5. The leaks have brought the following issues:

-Signal bars not accurate
-Sound dropping on the phone and can't be fixed without a reboot.
-Browser crashing
-50% without signal bug

All of these issues are present on v3 of the leak. V2 had issues with gmail images and linking to the internet from within a program. They have since been corrected.

I agree with your theory. It makes sense. It's most likely a hardware issue, not software issue in my opinion. Meaning *crosses fingers* my phone will be perfectly fine once it gets the 2.1 OTA =]
 
I think I'm with Frisco in that I am really very satisfied with my phone on 1.5... no major bugs at all. And I have a bad feeling that with 2.1 I won't be so lucky. Just crossing my fingers for no big issues.

So I'm guessing that I should try to replace the phone BEFORE getting the update...just to make sure...right? I may have to give them a call to discuss it.

I've been wondering what percentage of the software at 1.5 is being truly replaced by the OTA. That could impact our "bad = bad, good = good" 1.5 to 2.1 theory.

I'm eager for many reasons to see forum postings and blogs from new OTA users.

My thoughts on this mirror some others that those experiencing issues on their phones, that were exaggerated in the leaks will continue to have those issues.

The good news (again not my revelation) is that with the *official* code on the phone, you will be able to take the phone in for replacement.
 
The question is, how pissed off are people going to be if leak v3 is the same and all this time looking for a download link when we already have it thanks to Caddy?:confused: :eek: :D

I'm definitely going to laugh if that happens.

But seriously, the download link from the OTA won't be exactly the same, because it will be an update script instead of a full ROM.

To determine once and for all if they're identical, we have to wait for PCDphones.com to post the RUU file. Then we can run the RUU, check our temp folders for the ZIP file, and compare that to the leak.

For that to be accurate you'll need to do a binary comparison, or at the very least MD5 checksum comparison. Looking at dates and/or sizes will tell you nothing... but I guess the devs on xda will dissect it up and down.

I've wasted time and energy on far worse things than this. Sure it will suck, but I'm sure something else in my terrible life will come by to make this a walk in the park.

The leaked software just kind of woke those problems up somehow. If it was something that was in the software pure and simple then everyone would have it, right?

My girl had a lot of problems and she was on 1.5 the whole time. Her replacement works just as well as mine does. A new phone is a new phone and problems found on one may not exist on another.

The other thing I've wondered about is whether there are issues with some installed applications when the upgrade to 2.1 happens. Since everyone doesn't install the same apps it would make sense that some would have problems and others wouldn't. The only way to track that down is to uninstall all apps and see if there are problems. If not, add back one at a time until you find the problem app.
 
i remember back in november when my phone was new, of course still on 1.5, my phone would reboot at random times. so will the other two erises in the house. im not sure if it was fixed by the MR1 or MR2 but im thinking i might be in for trouble when 2.1 hits. according to OTD's theory about "waking up" those bugs.
 
I am pretty pleased with v3 and many believed that it was probably the OTA version. I was willing to except v3 for what it was. My only gripe is that I'm frustrated that they broke the Facebook sync thing (where ALL of my "friends" sync) and didn't fix it back.

The most prominent of these seem to be:

50% without signal
Silent calls (my personal favorite)

I tend to think that the 50% without signal bug is not necessarily a "bug" but an incomplete implementation of a feature that was simply not fully cooked in the leaks.

I also think in lieu of the update fixing anything, I think the Silent Call issue will be there no matter what.
 
in re: to going to the store and getting an update. i dont think you will ever be able too. i am pretty sure i saw a vzw tech state that the only s/w upgrades they do on smart phones are for BlackBerry's.

they can not update winmo, they can not update android.

Not to dishearten anyone, but I think that V3 and the OTA are the same thing.

Bright side:

Those with problems should be able to get replacements under warranty pretty soon. I would advice against trying it now though.

It would be pure insanity for the HTC or the Verizon programmers to have two versions of software floating around with the exact same release numbers.

No professional software engineer, programmer or manager would ever let that happen. It would be impossible to fix bugs because nobody would know which version they were working with and what bugs went with what.

That is why I agree with you that 1.2 V3 and 2.1 OTA are the same.
