Help 2.1 Problems - Issues - Quirks

A hard reset is very easy to do by yourself if you don't want to wait on Sprint to call back

Press HOME > MENU, then tap Settings > Security > Factory data reset. On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone and then tap Erase everything. To reset the phone using phone buttons, with the phone turned off, press and hold the HOME, END CALL/POWER, and BACK buttons. The reset process will start after a few seconds

Actually, tech support has a little bit different way of doing the hard reset. It works better than just the regular factory reset. I went thru that a few weeks ago. I tried the reset myself and it didnt fix anything, then i called Sprint and their techies ran me thru a diff procedure and it solved all my problems. Go ahead and call them, dont wait for them to call you.

Prior to the 2.1 install, all of my contacts had images that linked to their Facebook account. I cannot get facebook images to link to their contact information in my phone book. When trying to manually add them, it does not even show facebook friends. Anyone else having this problem?

Can you remember this process, so I don't have to call them?

sprint does the hard reset the back door way. You need your unlock code to do it. If you dial##786# then scroll to reset, it will ask you for the code. Once entered, the phone will do a factory refresh and the phone will do a hands free activation like the day you got it. It goes a little deeper than the normal hard reset in the settings menu. I think its called a RTN reset. Hope this helps.

anyone have their phones call anyone while it was sleeping? Just got a call from my girlfriends hero. It was sitting in her purse and decided to call my hero. She hadn't touched the phone in a few hours and always leaves it at the home screen and puts it to sleep when shes done using it. She said a few times, she's grabbed it and it's been awake with the dialer open.

Has anyone else tried this to see if this works. I would also like to know if you have to reinstall the update. I need to do something to fix this phone. I am to a point of filing a suit of breach of contract with Sprint and reporting them to the B.B.B. Thank-you in advance

The problem I have is my phone not making a data connection when I power it on. I always power it off at night and put in on the charger. In the morning I power it on and it comes on ok and any pending text or voice messages come through ok but it won't make the data connection. I wait up to 10 min sometimes, so I power it off and power it right back on and it will connect properly the second time. This seems to happen every day since I updated to 2.1.

I have had a few issues since I installed the Android 2.1 update, on my Sprint HTC Hero, but was able to fix quite a few of them myself. Below is a list and my personal commentary on each.

-Web Browser: The Google homepage kept displaying in either French or Spanish. I do not know exactly how I fixed this issue, but it seems to be gone now. I think it was a combination of clearing the web browser's cache and messing with settings on Google's homepage.

-Google Navigation: The blue arrow icon just would not show up in my app drawer after I installed the update for Google Maps. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it a few times to no avail. I finally decided to try rebooting the handset and that fixed it.

-Loss of Mobile Data: This problem still arises once in a while, however, either a simple reboot or toggling the Mobile Data widget on and off seems to rectify this. I do not experience this problem often enough to be concerning. One thing I do notice is that sometimes my handset likes to switch 1xRTT mode for an indeterminate amount of time after a phone call or while downloading an MMS image. Oh, and one more thing I noticed is that when I attach an image to an SMS, it compresses the picture WAY more than it did in Android 1.5. I used to be able to see several hundred kilobyte images in Android 1.5, but now they are reduced to under 10 kilobytes at maximum and the overall image resolution is very tiny.

-Ring Lag: My handset tends to waver from starting to play my ringtone between two and four rings on the caller's end, which is faster to slower than Android 1.5, respectively. I also noticed that after attempting to call my handset twice in a row, it would kick me right to voicemail and my data connection would be at 1xRTT. This does not happen consistently though.

-Repeating and/or Late E-Mail Notifications: This one I am still in the process of trying to figure out what is wrong. The scenario is that I will receive an email and get a notification, but if I do not check it for a while, I will get another notification for the same email some hours later. Now, it could be that the email's notification is just being delayed. I noticed one time that I had a new email, but the notification sound did not occur until some time later. If anyone has any ideas about this one I would be very interested to hear them.

-SMS and Keyboard Lag: I have noticed that upon opening the SMS app the first time, there is quite a bit more lag in loading previous texts than there was in Android 1.5. I actually used to have text message threads with over 600 texts in each and they would load quickly in Android 1.5. Additionally, the virtual keyboard seems to lag slightly more than it did in Android 1.5.

As you can see, most of the issues I have experienced were remedied after I did a little research. However, the email notification problem and general lag with the virtual keyboard still remains an issue, as does the inconsistent mobile data phenomenon.

Uh...that's nice, but if you really want to help, how about looking at the comprehensive list of issues we're maintaining (original thread post...updated) and test each with YOUR phone. Are you not having the calendar issues? Are you not having the other issues??

Testing those out and getting back to us would be helpful. Thanks.

There's another thread is this forum that says the hard and/or factory resets don't make any difference, and that ROM update is fully equivalent to an entire factory wipe and reset. In other words, they say you're bogus.

I do not seem to be having many of the issues mentioned previously in the comprehensive list. That is why I made my own list of issues. I think I was pretty detailed in what I was able to work around and what I was not able to. Sorry if it was not clear to you.

I was actually hoping someone else would have experienced some of the same problems I have and perhaps be able to offer up a suggestion or a solution to them. The email problem, for me, is especially irritating. I just noticed a new issue where the camera app seemingly guzzles the battery life after only a few minutes of usage. I literally used it about two minutes and it shot up to 98% of my total battery usage in the battery status section and dropped my total battery life by nearly 10%. I did not know this thread was only dedicated to testing out problems that other people have experienced. My impression was that I could voice my concerns on the issues I have experienced on my own after the Android 2.1 update.

Ok I'm an idiot!! My phone is ringing now! I don't know what the problem was but it's apparently not a problem now!

I'm NOT an idiot!! Nor am I losing my mind!! My phone doesn't always ring when I get a call. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes. Same problem. Getting very frustrated.

- I'm having problems with my weather updating. I know that there is a box that you can check in the setting for updates and the frequency, but when I check the box and push the back button it doesn't save when I go back into settings. Very annoying.

- Another issue is with my SMS. It's very very slow. Takes for forever to load my text history with each person. Sometimes I would have to shut the screen off a few times and turn it back on just to get to text someone. Seems like the phone freezes for a bit.

After downloading the official Google Maps update from the marketplace, the blue Navigation icon does not appear anywhere. I can't launch it from the app drawer and I can't add it to my home. Interestingly, if I use the search widget and type Navigation, the icon does show up in that list.

Occasionally the Android Search widget disappears from my home screen. I can still long-hold where it should be and and pick it up, but it remains transparent. To fix this I have to drag it to the trash can and then re-add it.

I had the same problem with the blue arrow of the Google Navigation app not appearing in the app drawer. You have to reboot your phone for it to show up.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Google Maps update twice before I thought to try rebooting. So, save yourself some time and reboot. :)

I didn't even have to reboot, just launched nav through maps, and when i was done, the widget was in my list of all apps....

Before I tried rebooting I was able to get to Google Navigation by entering addresses in Google Maps and then pressing the "route" button. However, that still did not make the blue arrow icon of Google Navigation appear in my app drawer.

I guess he could try both methods suggested in this thread. If one of them works, then he will be happy.

Yeah, the hero does a ton of different stuff for different people. If we can all share our experiences, hopefully we can all help each other with our problems.... That is the great thing about this forum... Many issues have been found, and just as many different solutions.;)

Fair enough...my apologies. I was a bit peeved at the Hero myself when i authored my reply....

Recently upgraded to Android 2.1 and here's what I'm noticing:

There's a noticeable lag when using the Hero - particularly when using the keyboard. I also see "loading data" very often when going to my bookmarks widget. I phoned Sprint - they tried to deny any knowledge of it...but the advanced tech said they are aware of the problem.

Getting repeat email notifications for email received DAYS prior to current (for example on 5/31 I received an email notification for a message received on 5/27). I use K-9 so it's not a problem just associated with Android / HTC mail.

Sending a text message to a group is hit or miss. It works 50% of the time. My Hero thinks I'm trying to send an email - not a text. I did discover a workaround: Go to the address book and send your text message from there.

I too experience the annoying vibration when initiating a call - in addition to an increased lag when making an outgoing call

Really, people find that vibrate annoying? I quite enjoy it actually, because I don't have to hold the phone to my face waiting for it to connect, just wait for the vibration and I know it's ringing...

Granted I shouldn't have to wait that long for it to connect, but it's a fair compromise to me, esp. since connecting with GV (which I use primarily) usually takes a bit longer than an average dial...

You have lag elsewhere? Where? I found my hero was much improved in general with lag on the update... but the keyboard is pretty awful in landscape mode, and sometimes portrait.

I think the vibration is probably also good for people that have a problem with pocket dialing

I was having the same trouble and I was able to resolve it by going to Menu (from the homepage) > Settings > Accounts and Sync then you'll see "Weather" under "manage accounts" ." If you check the box labled "Auto-sync" it will sync all accounts under the "Manage Accounts" list. Now go back to your Weather settings and you'll now see that the "Udate Automatically" box is now checked! Once I did this my Weather is updating every hour on the hour!

-Hope this helps!
