2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

The same issue happens with mine and that's if I'm lucky enough to have it lock for extended periods of time. Samsung is pulling the Toyota move from back in the days until one day they get caught red handed and the government jumps in. If the Galaxy Tab ships with the GPS issue, that will confirm that this is a design flaw and one that might not have a solution. How can one carrier phone be fixed and not the others is what puzzles me. I wonder if they changed vendors or part suppliers and are now gearing up for a possible recall. At this stage of the game, I would not pass anything by them.

Thanks Endoran, I'd thank you above if I could, but I don't have that option for your post for some reason. I agree whole-heartedly about the waiting for Froyo too, I just want my GPS to work as advertised (I think there was a layar commercial at some point or something). Honestly, (and I am stock with Touchwiz still) this device feels as fast as my 2.2 nexus does, so other than full html5 (which would be nice) and flash (but hey, I don't need ads and slow web page loading), I would be happy if they fixed the GPS and we didn't get Froyo until like November. But that bight just be me...

I would like to know if the Epic has the same chip, I still haven't seen conclusive evidence that it does. But it also has GPS issues, so I don't even know that they fixed it on the Epic

I'm hoping to see more progress by tomorrow in the way of posts about the update. If there is no traction by then, I say we got ourselves a hoax.

A hoax by an at&t employee? You can actually search at&t's site and find the article.

Have Any of you tried this:

Fix for Samsung Galaxy (Vibrant, Captivate) GPS Problems

I did it, albeit my GPS works fine most of the time, I don't like AT&T forcing me to use Their idea of a good GPS server.

Any "fix" that involves the concept of a "GPS server" isn't a "fix" at all due to it revealing its total lack of understanding of how GPS works by using the term "GPS server".

GPS doesn't use "servers". A real fix works without servers, without wifi, without cell towers. Like a normal GPS receiver.

That was for the International version ("SGS") in the UK (hence the signature on the blurb "SamsungUKMobile"), and even it has been pushed back to the end of October I think. The SGS threads have more info about it. Samsung US has never given even an approximation for Froyo, just that "it will come" and "this year" at the launch event.

In my opinion, they need to fix the GPS for everyone first, then we can actually enjoy the Froyo goodness...

The GPS is not fixed, it is "optimized." Mine is working better now, but still no where near the performance of previous smartphones or its current competitors. There is debate whether there is another "fix" update coming, as Samsung tech support has told some people that another update is coming, while telling others that this was it.

Seen a couple of entries in Samsung Mobile Facebook page saying October 20th as a possible release date for AT&T. But I'll believe it when I see it.

If Samsung had any plans on improving their image with their release of the Galaxy S line, they FAILED! This is making them look like a bunch of idiots!!!
Sounds like a bit of overreacting here...:)

They've not even approached the degree of arrogance that Steve Jobs demonstrated regarding the _real_ antenna issue on the iPhone 4. The proximity sensor issues and more.

Perhaps a simpler phone would suit you well. Android is a young up and coming platform that is bound to have bugs and other annoyances.

Rather than get all emotional, get a simple phone and you won't have any worries.

Good Luck

I agree with you about the arrogance, Samsung has not blatantly denied the issue. But this is a phone-specific problem, not an android issue. In fact, I think every other android phone has a gps that works great...

Samsung Facebook Support page actually claims:

Samsung ServiceThe Samsung Captivate's GPS performance update is now available!!

Look for a notification from ATT & simply download the file to update your phone. This will be pushed OTA by ATT over the next few weeks starting today.

The update also improves other device functions, such as media scanning time, adds the full version of Quickoffice and addresses Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support.last Wednesday

On their Wall At the very top.

Yea I dont know what the deal with Samsung is man. I must say the update somewhat improved my GPS but it is still way worse than my old phone also a Samsung (Messenger) on Metro PCS, which pretty flawlessly although I did have to make some last second maneuvers lol. And it is extremely worse than other peoples phones that know of, my boss has a Casio, a phone made by a watch company and the GPS is extremely accurate and responsive. If a better solution is not available I'm going to be returning about 1 cap every week until AT&T shoots me on the spot lol

Well other than this thread - http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/190581-leaked-2-2-froyo-thread.html

I have noticed a lot of other little changes and I thought we could all share anything we've noticed so that others can take note.

Heres what has changed for me, which I dont believe are general Froyo updates, but Touchwiz updates (although I dont know everything):

- Speed increase in general use
- Notification bar now turns green and flashes when you are on a call and using the phone for other reasons
- Speaker, mute, handset buttons are larger when you are on a call
- There is now a little arrow thing under the text box when you are typing, which makes it MUCH easier to select and edit words that youve already typed, you can slide it around to each letter. Arrow also lets you paste and space
- Contacts list now has a "Search contacts" bar at the top
- Notification bar lets you toggle Auto rotation on/off, and also GPS on/off
- Notification bar no longer has vibration toggle
- General changes in color schemes, some areas/font colors changed, added color to settings menu, etc.
-Additional "Allow sensor aiding" for Location services, saying it enhances power and uses additional sensors to help locate
-Task manager, along with a new widget, which lets you close running applications and look at your RAM usage etc. Also accessible by holding down home screen button.
- "Contact" shortcut widget (to call, text, or get info on a contact from homescreen) now opens the box directly above the contacts icon

wouldnt be that off the wall, the froyo leak is very good, build quality imo, probably already in at&t's hands (so they can get rid of that ap mode :P )

I pray it does in the next 2 weeks. I have the leaked Froyo, it is good, but a few bugs/lag problems still...Really can't wait to get official Froyo, Rooted and LagFix and seem this thing REALLY scream!
