2.2 release imminent

To my knowledge the phones that got bricked was because some people tried to apply the update twice.

Because the system prompted them to install an update again.

And then caused failure by not detecting that the fix was already in.

I can't blame users for that - an appliance should be easy, and that was too easy to fix.

Not pebkac.

Again, the problem is we are dealing with HTC and Sprint. With a limited track record we have no idea how long either will take. Whether or not the Hero took as long as it did due to technical issues, incompetence or corporate strategy (or lack there of) we still don't have enough data to make an accurate guess.

BTW with peoples supposition that the Hero took so long to move from 1.5 to 2.1 due to the hardware I would disagree. Look how long it took the Euro Hero to move over. About 12-13 months and I do believe the hardware was similar, albeit, GSM. This tells me that firmware releases are all about money not specs.

With that said, I will laugh my a$$ off though if the Incredible gets 2.2 before the EVO though. If that is the case, so much for the statement that the EVO will the the "second" phone with FroYo.

Also you had to look at it a different way too. By the time 2.1 came around, the Hero was no longer a top priority. HTC has so many android devices out there and I doubt they have teams to work on all the updates for every device at the same time. They probably prioritize and have a few teams work on a few devices at a time. Anyway that's just my guess to keep me from worrying about when I'm gonna get an update. lol Besides, when it is released (2.2), then I'm sure there will be a new device showing up with gingerbread on board. You just can't keep up with the Jones's!

I'm not asking for "easy" ...that would be the iphone, i only require it not be ******ed...

Cyanogen>Sense.

Talk to me when Cyanogen can at least reproduce the very basic functions of the phone (4G, for example.)

HTC FroYo+Sense will be out, and working much better then Cyanogen, first by the looks of it.

4G is almost ready. They could probably have it before HTC rolls out Froyo.

I agree about cyanogen getting the 4g working but if you look at the camera videos, fps fixes and froyo, its unlikely that sprint/htc get all of those done anywhere in the near future. And by the time they do, cyanogen or other devs will be miles ahead with something else. The factory will never keep up.

Though I would prefer all those things from HTC rather than by root, I don't think anyone here has the confidence all will be resolved.

I'm not a glass half full guy when it comes to Sprint/HTC and updates.

Waited 8 months for my Hero.

Same here. I gave up the waiting game, switched to an iPhone and used it for 4 months. When I came back to sprint and got an Evo I saw, oh, the Hero FINALLY got its update...

Joke!

It could be literally months before we see an official FroYo release to the Evo. Sprint is horribly slow in finalizing, approving and releasing updates.

I never heard a number on that. I suspect it wasn't very many or we would have heard a lot more about it.

This is good, encouraging news. Let's not try to make a sow's ear out of silk purse.

It was high enough that sprint pulled the update for 12 hours while it fixed the problem. It takes a lot of issues to get something like that to happen.

I understand your sentiment, but that attitude seems a bit extreme. We have volunteer devs out there making so much possible that many of us would have no hope of doing on our own. The 4G and HDMI out are totally new territory, and I personally applaud the work being done for the community.

Given today's announcement, I guess the joke is on you!

Check out this CNET report talking about the Sprint rollout of Froyo next week:

The Evo gets Froyo | Android Atlas - CNET Blogs

It says that "The Evo will be the first device to get the much-anticipated upgrade, which adds a selection of new features and fixes two of the largest drawbacks of the Android OS."

Is this true? I heard some phones already had 2.2, but maybe the article is talking about an upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2, and is not including phones that shipped with 2.2 factory installed....

If this is true, I can talk smack to my Droid friends who have been rubbing it in that they were going to be first to get 2.2.

I thought EVO was the 2nd...because I know the N1 got it first...hell, they've had it for quite a while now.
