Root 2.2 Root Suggestion

I use a stock ROM with a custom kernel flashed over it.

That's what I recommend for people who are new to rooting. It allows you to get used to the new powers and features before you go crazy with further customizations.

I've also played with CyanogenMod6 w/ Snap7 kernel, mainly to test out a ROM with Sense completely stripped out.

Haven't tested it, but Fresh is another good and popular ROM.

I've run stock rooted, Fresh, DamageControl, CM6, Ava-Froyo, FreakyFroyo, and currently checking out BakedSnack, all with various kernels. I find CM6/Snap 7.4 to be the fastest, but not yet fully functional. I like DC, Ava is different, but eats my battery like crazy, and I couldn't get wifi working with FreakyFroyo. IMO, Fresh/netarchy gives me the best balance of full functionality, performance, and battery life, and I prefer the Espresso Rosie cosmetics. BakedSnack 1.5/kernel 4 is also pretty good, and has a nice theme of its own. So far, I think I still prefer Fresh. YMMV.

I am currently running DC 3.5 because I find it to be faster than Fresh. I have no issues on this ROM so I have been using it for a while. However, I do flash a new kernel every couple of days (or whenever the King puts a new one out).
 
So as a newbie to root access, I have used Titanium Backup to freeze unwanted apps. Taking the slow and easy approach, I want to see if they have any affects on the system before deleting (Thanks EarlyMon).

Now I'm fine with Stock 2.2 because the above plus a few extras is all I wanted to do. But for the extras. If I want wi-fi tether I should be able to do that now correct? And as for flashing kernals such as to remove the 30 fps cap, what direction do I take now? I have no issues with battery life and my system is very stable; my hope is to keep it that way.

Well as of now I don't have Wimax where I live so that's not an issue for me. Besides 3G is blazing fast to the point that i can even compare it to any device running 4G and speed will be about the same if not faster IMO. HDMI? How many times have u really used it? To me is just a cool feature but useless.

That's just my .2 cents.

If u are running the stock 2.2 rooted u can get free wifi tether installing an app called Wireless Tether there are different versions floating so u need to find out which one works with ur ROM.

When it comes to Kernels u need to be very selective if u don't wanna get endless bootlops or random reboots,for some phones a couple of reboots are required for it to stick and work properly ex: most snap Kernels. Flashing process is as easy as flashing a ROM,u put the .zip on the SD/card and flash from recovery. Make sure u do a nand backup before u flash and before flashing the Kernel wipe cache/dalvik-cache and u should be good.

Before u decide which kernel to go with do some homework and c which kernels are working properly with ur ROM. I heard netarchy-toasts Kernel get along pretty good with stock 2.2 rooted.

Indeed. A custom Kernel in most cases will benefit you from getting better battery life,Setcpu is not required to run a custom kernel but it will come handy if you like oveclock ur CPU,it also allows to set different profiles which leads to better battery life.

Netarchy-toasts kernel is what I see must people run with stock rooted rom and seems to be pretty good both performance and juice wise. With this said YMMV.(your mileage may vary)

Thanks for the info. I'm just getting ready to root so I figured I would try and decide which ROM/kernel to go with. Looks like stock or fresh is a good way for me to dive in. I guess the beauty of it is I can change whenever I want.

On a side note, switched to Evo from iPhone and haven't looked back. Thanks to all for the help.

There plenty of ROMs out there to choose from some performing better than others,but as u said the beauty of being rooted is than u can change whenever u want. Be wise enough to read everything before you flash,the first post will always tell you everything you need to know about the ROM and how to flash it. Happy rooting.

Edit: I'm coming from an iPhone and BB and have got most of the people I know with iPhones to jump ship and join the open source side. This is just getting better,I've never had so much fun with a phone before.

One quick question that I think I have the answer to but want to be sure. All say "make sure to wipe cache/dalvik-cache/data/etc. I have that option in Titanium. Is that sufficient or should I use another method?

If all you are flashing is the Kernel you don't need to wipe ur data just wipe as follow cache,dalvik-cache from within Recovery Mode.
 
running fresh right now and i like it, probably gonna try out CM6 after a week or so to see how i like it.
 
Is anyone else having problems with the king kernels? I find them to be a lil unstable, specially overclocking... I just rooted a couple of days ago from 2.2, and i'm running Baked Snacks with Netharchy's 4.1.8.1 BFS and everything runs fast and smooth
 
Myns TwoPointTwo with Kings #11 CFS. Great battery life. And for what it's worth, my Quadrant Score is 1368 running stock speed.
