2.2 Update - HTC Confirms Major Problems

Same here.

Random question from a relative noob - does streaming music use only a small amount of juice? I streamed A Online Radio the other day in an effort to drain my battery so that I could charge it from zero as per suggestions on here, and the battery dropped only a few percentage points after about an hour.

Streaming or playing through the music player? Streaming, my battery drops about 1-2% per song. Through the music player, maybe 1-2% per hour of music.

Mine seems to be running slower and has some other qurks since the upgrade to 2.2, suchas the screen unlock seems to be slow and sticky and so does the pull down screen; when I open messages or email in portrait the messages are shown in landscape (odd) - battery life wasn't great with 2.1 and seems to be just as bad with 2.2. That said, I think this is a great phone! And I have to admit some of the 2.2 upgrade are pretty cool! I love the LED flashlight.

Can anybody provide step by step instructions to downgrade to 2.1?

I noticed dropping the brightness and setting the screen fade out to 30 seconds helped me keep the phone going a little longer.

Battery is still a major issue though. Im scared to go to work without my charger...:(

I honestly had all of your problems. Sever lag running anything and the battery wouldn't last more than 4 hours if that.

I just did a factory reset and everything is good to go. I used my phone today for 2+ hours playing pandora with the speaker on loud and my battery indicator barely even moved. its now 6:30pm. been up since 8am and its just a little more than half way through.

Just my .02 cents. Try the reset or the RUU. It wasn't that bad reinstalling the apps because I had app brain.

BTW, I have the stock battery and stock 2.2

In all honesty, I think my battery life is roughly the same, possibly even better after updating to Froyo. I used to bump charge it in the mornings before I headed out, but even when I don't do that I typically get a good 12 hours out of it before I get down into the 30% range, and that's running on just 3G most of the time and fairly heavy texting and browser usage.

Guess I got a decent battery out of the bunch. :)

I've done a reset, and you prob ran your pandora over wifi.

[GUIDE] How to downgrade from OTA RUU 2.2 to 2.1 - xda-developers

All your problems disappear once you go back to 2.1. That's what I did, and am loving my phone all over again. 2.2 is just way too buggy for me, even with a factory reset. They added too many processes running eating the battery, but the worst part was the super slow battery charge rate, which made it impossible for me to use GPS Navigation and charge battery at the same time.

Frequency
Peak times
As items arrive
Off peak times
Every Hour

The syncing every hour extended my battery tremendously. In just under 12 hours I used less than 50%. Normally i run through the battery in 8 hours.

I found that Exchange Calendar Sync was CONSTANTLY trying to re-sync (like every 1-2 seconds). When I changed the sync schedule to 15 minutes instead of As Items Arrive, the problem went away, and my awake time is now a small fraction of my up time (they were virtually identical before).

Question; Does your car charger show up on your phone as if you plugged it into a computer?

It's too bad more people didn't root, install a leaked Froyo ROM, and installed a kernel. That's what I did, and I'm currently at 38 hours uptime and 34% battery (per the system, currently going through a recalibrate with Battery Left). That's with mostly light phone/text usage but moderate app usage/browsing, wifi on when I'm at home and 3G on when at work, and no data connection while I'm sleeping from ~11pm-7am. That's .58% per hour, giving me an estimated 58 hours battery life. I'm on a 2.15 radio, Froyo Lite 8/26 leak ROM (removed some stock bloatware), and the undervolted hydrakernal. Couldnt be any more happier, it seems like the battery life keeps getting better every few days, like it's "breaking in" or something. If it can make it until I go to bed tonight, I'll be one happy camper, since that'll be a full 48 hours of typical (for me) usage.

With how easy rooting, ROM/radio/kernal installing is, you're foolish if you don't do it!

+1
There are few highly desirable things that are gone with root/new rom (HTC Sense's camera/camcorder, sense's cut/paste, and other sense goodies), that if you can live without, you can have a rock solid phone in return. After rooting, my phone is actually reliable. Everything that it still does, it does very well. Battery life is great, browsing is great, calls are better (still wouldn't say great), and everything is generally snappier and doesn't force close or auto reboot anywhere near as much. My favorite app (A Online Radio), which I use several times a day - everyday - also works perfectly and hasn't dropped out on me even once since rooting.

I had this exact same problem! I'm glad it's not just me having this problem.

I used to get pretty much a full day of battery life with moderate to light battery use. A few days after installing 2.2 I noticed the battery would either charge very extremely slow or not charge at all. Aside from that, my phone would be completely dead after 4 hours from just sitting on standby on my desk. The phone was warm to the touch from doing nothing so I knew something was wrong.

I was very frustrated so I decided to try a different charging technique I had read about to extend battery life. While the phone was charging I turned the POWER OFF. Still connected, I turned it back on once the charge was complete and voil

It's too bad more people don't know that uptime is virtually irrelevant. Awake time after a reboot from full charge is the only indicator that matters. My phone works pretty good when I don't use it too. But alas, I do. I have the virtuous rom, virtuous kernal, 2.15 radio, setcpu, system panel, and an extended battery. But 3g sucks the juice dry at ridiculous speeds. It might be a coverage or signal issue, but I would prefer to have the battery life I did in 2.1.

For the first two days after the manual update, which forced a fresh wipe of the phone, my battery life was horrible.

After a couple full drains and recharges, and installing ATK, and changing my gmail to only update manually instead of every 5 minutes for my 3 accounts, my battery life has improved very much. It is slightly better then before 2.2.

I had to write to Verizon complaining about the 2.2 update. It basically killed my phone to where it was in a force close loop and would not boot up. The Verizon Wireless store rep said 'you have to do a factory reset'. My response was 'that's crazy'. He seemed unconcerned as though it was no big deal. I spent the next 4 hours rebuilding. A phone is not my life and I would have preferred to spend the 4 hours doing something productive.

Oh really? Considering people here are complaining that they only get a few hours of uptime until their batteries crap out when I'm getting 40+, it seems like a pretty legitimate statistic to me

i feel like if i had to do a reset i would be rebuilding things on my phone for weeks afterwards because i wouldnt have time to sit down for 4 hours or whatever just to install apps, and reposition all my home screens.

im very happy that i didnt have to do that.

People with these battery life issues and FC issues are exactly why Verizon is so slow to release updates to our phones. They have to take into consideration every possible settings configuration and app configuration, and then the combo of both. Even then they obviously can't predict what you have done to change your phone from factory. The reason they tell you to do a factory reset if you are having bad battery life is because you might have downloaded and maybe uninstalled an app that is causing memory leakage or left on a constant data stream behind the scenes that only a factory reset will un-configure. The biggest reason for battery drain is 3G/1x switching or data pulling. Like I have said before in this topic these app developers aren't the most reliable and cut a ton of corners to get an app out the door to you. That is why you really need to watch what you download and change the app settings back to default before you uninstall it because once you uninstall the app it can leave behind problems if the settings aren't reset. A certain SMS app (popular one) is known to cause massive data leakage if some settings aren't reset back to default before uninstall.

Just for example look at the laundry list of defects Samsung left in their Galaxy S just to get it out the door to Verizon but will fix in a software update later. Then think about the apps you download and where they come from.
