2.3.4 Update incoming for Xperia Devices

I also have an Xperia Play 4G through AT&T. So the update has to be pushed out via AT&T or, I guess I don't get it. Apple pushes out all updates for iPhone, regardless of carrier. I was hoping Sony would do the same, but I guess we have to wait on AT&T. If I unlock my XP, will I be able to get the update then?

Trying to be patient, but it is annoying to see all the sites talk about how great the update is and I can't use it... ;)

If you root and put a custom android rom on it (like cyogen), you can update to even newer versions than what Sony has provided.

Thanks for the info. I think I will wait till my warranty runs out as I thought I read that if I did root it I would void my warranty. Does that also unlock it or is that separate? I am pretty new to cell phone hacking... Now if it was a Mac or a PC... ;)

Haha I understand. I really am not sure either... I believe you have to have the bootloader unlocked to put a ROM on it... And that's different than just rooting it.

called Rogers last week and they told me officially that they didn't support from now (2.3.3) the PLAY

is this officail on ATT? I'm not gonna upgrade....still with bugs. If there is no big leaps on that upgrade and my phone is working well, I'm not gonna do it.

I have finally received the update, Im on Orange UK. Anyone else got it yet? Also, what are the chances of us all getting Ice Cream Sandwich at some point?

Aren't SE preping a 4.0 rollout for all the 2011 Xperia line? This might be why the 2.3.x updates haven't been rolled out to everyone.
well, as far as the rumor goes, yup, they apre preparing a 4.0 update

debranded it last night on wotonserver... runs smoother, react faster... couldn't ask more, also now i'm depending from SE straight... not from Rogers anymore

That's what I thought but after a little research, apparently the update has not been rolled out to everyone because it is carrier dependent. AT&T just got the Play in late september, after the update was rolled out to other carriers. It takes them time to add their craptastic software to it, like carrier IQ, which AT&T does load on the Play and then they have to test and do there other stuff. I read on another blog somewhere that there was a 3.0.1.B.0.2xx firmware that was just certified for AT&T and the rumor is that it is the 2.3.4 upgrade for the AT&T XP 4g, so hopefully AT&T users see it soon...

maybe its me, but does everyone feel like when they talk to customer service from their carriers about upgrades, etc., ur just getting the run around? i say this because i went to verizon last week and asked about why they brand their xp's with certain apps and other carriers put other apps, like the playstation pocket/suite, etc. i also asked about the 2.3.4 update and if ics was comin and they said that sony pushes out the updates to the phone but then i read somewhere that its the initial carrier who decides when to push the update out.

seems to me like everone, regardless of carrier, gets screwed no matter what.

I decided to contact VZW support today in regards to the 2.3.4 update.

According to VZW they have not been given the update by SE. After finding this out I decided to contact SE in regards to the update.

The SE rep I spoke with said that this was correct and VZW has not been given the update to 2.3.4 as of yet and that it was being pushed out around the world/different countries at different times for some reason. It appears as though US is somewhere on the bottom (didn't make the list) of the list. I asked the rep who I should contact in regards to when we would be getting the update and was told I would need to write the corporate office with this question as she did not have access to this information unfortunately.

This appears to be different from what other users have been hearing when they attempt to contact VZ and SE in regards to the update.

I have to say I have been pretty happy with my Xperia play overall, but I would still like to see Verizon get of their high horse and give us the functionality that the Xperia Play has overseas. The Vanilla OS that they pushed out is very plain and does get kinda old after a while, especially after having the OG droid and all of the customization options that I had at my finger tips. Hope to enjoy this phone in a way that will allow more user driven customization at some point. Until then, I will be contacting SE to find out why they dislike the VZ customers so.
