2.3 GingerBread for Captivate[discussion]

I got sick of waiting for this update so I rooted my phone and flashed CM7 two weeks ago.

I know it's early, but has anyone who was previously running CM7 switched to the official GB update? Am I missing anything?

Only been playing with GB for a day now, but suggestions are that the battery life is worse. Phone was on yellow at about 9 PM last night. With no activity at all, the phone shut itself off at about 10 PM.

Phone was fully charged overnight. With minimal activity, it is down to 37% at 2:37 PM.

I know I will miss the Silent toggle on the notification bar. So now how do you quickly silence your phone?
I hold the power button down until 3 options come up: Silent mode, flight mode, and power off. Then select "silent mode".
Also how do you set up voice dialing?
Same as Froyo: hold the magnifying glass button down until the voice search appears and say "Call <contact>".

Or are you talking about Bluetooth headset voice dialing? I'm having trouble with bluetooth headset voice dialing because the phone can't seem to hear me through the headset. It just keeps asking me to try speaking the command again.

You can download "Anycut" from the android market if you want to do any shortcut including silent mode.

No luck here, I have tried 5 times now and each time I get a failed update. Wiped the phone after the first two tries to see if that helps and it didn't. Over the air doesn't work either, it forces closed immediately although it has always done that anytime I've tried checking for an update that way. Just got off the phone with Tech Support and to no avail, I'll take it to a store tomorrow to attempt to get a warranty replacement but I'm not sure they'll do that over an upgrade. Warranty is up in six days though so I may as well try.

I upgraded from rooted Froyo to GB. I think that it has really messed my phone. My phone will go black, make the noises that it makes when shutting down, then return to the screen after a minute or two, as though nothing happened. No reboot, just the noise. Sometimes, it will just stop and go black and the power button will not work. The only thing to do is to pop the battery to restart. My battery is lasting about 9 hours on a full charge, and I keep getting the force close message, not just on tethering manager, but on Winamp and other programs that I am not using. Before I upgraded, I had used Titanium to freeze the AT&T crap and some apps. After the upgrade, I never got the AT&T bloatware. But, apps, like Voice Dial, which was frozen, are working. It is not showing on my screen and I cannot change any settings, but it is working when I use my bluetooth.
(Just checked my battery. I have lost 15% charge in the last hour.)
On the bright side, my GPS is working flawlessly and I can voice dial.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you can get into download mode, I would Odin back to stock and try again. I went from 2.2 rooted to 2.1 stock via Odin and then let keis take me to 2.2 then on to 2.3.5. It was a longer process and I lost everything, but my update went smooth (other than the damn tether manager, which a factory reset took care of). Maybe worth a shot anyway.

Can I use Odin to with the bastardized 2.3 that is on my phone?Never used Odin before, too chicken, but remember that there was a problem with 1008 phones and Odin. (Of course, mine is a 1008 phone.) Going to have to dig through the archives to see what the problem was.

Well that sucks :(, not sure then, like you said you may to to do some digging to find out for sure. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Did you thaw the apps that you froze with Titanium before updating?

. Miracle of miracles !! I thot I'd try Kies mini again, it found a Kies update, did that, hooked up hone, and it was finally recognized. Did the GB update without a hitch, and never lost a thing. But my bluetooth stereo didn't link, so had to go thru that. If that's all I have in the way of problems, that's pretty darned good.

BTW, the whole thing took about 4 mins.

I sure lost a lot of hair over that Kies thing. Hate it. This on Win 7x64, duo-core Intel board.

No, and that was a major mistake.I have a feeling that I should have unrooted, too. I spoke to someone at AT&T and they were their usual helpful selves- they told me to call Samsung, but helpfully, offered to transfer me directly. The guy at Samsung told me to do a Factory Reset and that would remove the update and leave me with Froyo. Uh-huh, yeah. You've got to wonder where they get these people.

Hey folks, thought I'd throw in my $0.02 on the GB update

First, I work in a pathology lab, so every time I see GB I think gallbladder. Not a pretty name for an OS :)

Second, this upgrade was hella more simple than the Froyo upgrade. Thankful for that.

Third, for a while, I kept getting a tethering process failure. Anyone else get it? I haven't had it now since Wednesday morning, so I'm going to assume the damn phone figured it out.

Fourth, overall, my experience isn't much different. Well, not true, GB cured my liver dysfunction and ho-hum mouth. It's a miracle!

Ok, enough of my doggerel. Hope everyone else had a decent experience (although that's been shown not to be the case).

I totally agree with the point about the simplicity compared to 2.2, even though it didn't give me any problems, I remember a lot of folks having issues with it.

And I was also getting the tethering manager force close. I did a factory rest and haven't had it since. Plus it made me feel like I was setting up a brand new phone, which was nice.

Yes. I also had the tethering manager force close after the update. I also did a factory reset afterwards and all was well (except for having to setup everything again...).

Same here. Had the tethering problem at first but not in the last couple of days. Glad I didn't do a reset and loose everything.

Update 1/14. Guess I spoke to soon about the tethering manager failure problem going away. It reappeared today.

I'd like to upgrade to GB but I just can't see losing root when there ust doesn't seem to be much that GB brings to the discussion. Am I missing something?

I'm done with AT&T and Samsung. I tried updating to 2.3 and it failed. I had this trouble last year trying to update to 2.2. After several hours I managed to get it back to 2.1 with odin. I've been unable to get back to stock with Odin this time around. I'm gonna keep trying for a bit.

Edit: I was up until 5am but I finally got it. I tried an older computer and was able to flash back to 2.1 with odin then I upgraded to 2.2, then 2.3. I'm still pissed though lol.

Just used Kies to upgrade to gingerbread. Everything seems to work great! Like others, I am now not rooted. I tried super one click which rooted froyo easily but it does not work for Gingerbread.

How do I reroot?

Thanks for any help!

Did the update this morning. What did I notice?
1) No more lag on my home screens
2) GPS locked on in about 10 seconds instead of 30sec
3) more consistent Wifi connection - sometimes would not connect to my home network

That's enough improvements to make me happy so far...

Just posted how in the "all things root" section.

I'll say this, GPS and Swype are totally fixed with GB, to me it's a rather large improvement. Still a drag that there is no copy paste in email...

I do see some nice improvements with Gingerbread .... the main one being wifi not going dormant on its own.

However i now occasionally get a rotated screen throughout the OS .... and it can't be switched back to vertical. Plugging in headphones would sometimes fix it .... or a USB cable. Rebooting doesn't. Swiping the auto-rotation one way or the other has no effect. It never did this when new or under frodo .... just now in GB.

Something else that works is dropping it from 8-10 inches .... my favorite fix.
