Is there a way to turn off the 3G on an unrooted EVO 4G solely for the purpose of extending my batery life?

yes in your wireless settings it is called mobile networks. you can also create a toggle switch on your home screen for it as well.

All I see is the ability to turn on and off the 4g. Is the off switch for the 3g bidding somewhere?
yes, long press on the home screen>select widgets>scroll down to settings>select mobile network.

not a problem. you will see that 3g can be just as bad as 4g when it comes to hogging up the battery life.
