3D on Google Maps 5.0?!

I've just installed Google maps 5.0 on my T-Mobile Hero (updated to 2.1), but can't seem to get the tilting and 3D functions going. Any ideas?
 
I've zoomed in all the way, all I get is a 3D rendition of buildings, but no tilting or rotation functionality. Also, I've noticed in the promo video from Google that there's supposed to be a little compass in the top right hand corner, but I don't seem to have that either, so the map is always "North up".
 
Nice job Carracas for providing that Google link. The Hero is not there and that is sad. The Hero is a very cool smart phone and could be the perfect size for many many people. It's just too bad I guess it just doesn't have the horsepower to handle some of these cool features. If and when I upgrade in a year or so I will be looking for a phone like the Hero in size and hopefully it will have all the goodies inside to handle all the latest and greatest upgrades that may come out in it's lifetime. The shame is that this was Sprints cutting edge smart phone a year ago and now it's truly outdated and couldn't handle the projected improvements for it's designed lifetime.

Hopefully the custom google maps, Brut, will update to 5.0 soon.

I'm sure that will come with the 3D city view, whether our phones are up to it or not :P
 
Has anyone else had trouble installing this version on the Hero? When I go to update it downloads but doesn't do anything after. I can update and installl other apps fine. My initially thought was that version 5 doesn't work on the Hero...

My Telus Hero running 2.1 (VillainROM 12) doesn't even give me the option of upgrading Maps to 5.0. I'm stuck at 4.7.0. Would anyone have any idea what's going on and what I can do about it?

Thanks Carracas for the link. Interestingly, although (surprisingly) the Hero doesn't appear in the list of supported devices, the HTC G2 is there. That's what T-Mobile call the Hero.

I also have VillainROM 12. Perhaps this could be the problem? Can anyone verify this?
 
Maps 5.0 will run on the Hero - I have it thanks to the latest Elelinux ROM. I can confirm however that the 3D tilt/rotate isn't functional.

Odd - I did a search for 'google maps' in the market and it (as expected) found Maps, and (not so expectantly) stated it needed to be updated. I then updated without problem. Sadly, the new cool features don't seem to be enabled, as others have said.
