Root 3D user needs help with OG

Greetings, evo 3d user here with some quick questions regarding the og 4. My sister in law has this phone and it is on is last leg. I am attempting to breath new life into it for the remainder of Its days. I plan on using the taco root. So for roms, do you guys have a stable ics with (mostly) everything working? How about Cm9? What are the top roms for this phone in your opinion, closest to stock experience that will deliver a solid performance? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Top ROMS:

Sense based-
Tommy's Classic EVO
MikG 3.11

AOSP-
Decks Reloaded

We have working ICS ROMS, but I wouldn't recommend them to a family member as a daily driver because they are missing some functionality. (4G, front facing camera)

GB works perfectly.

Great I will look into these, thanks

MikG is probably the best of the sense roms but if you're loading an aosp rom, I would recommend using CM7.2. This was just released a few days ago as a stable GB CM rom. Reloaded is an awesome rom but I feel there a few things that will be updated in the future that will make the rom even better but for now I would flash the CM7.2, imo;) And to give it an ICS look, load up the Holo launcher from the market. Most people swear by the GO launcher but it's not as solid as Holo. Either way, you won't be disappointed but if opinions matter, I loaded up CM7.2 for my wife's phone and not Reloaded

I was wondering about cm7, I like your idea of doing the ics themed launcher. Does CM7 have a custom kernel with it. Throw me a link if possible to cm7.2.
Miks looks good as well

Update: completely forgot she is most likely going to want to keep sense so I will probably go with mik. What's a good kernel to go with this?

CM7.2 stable http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/jenkins/2866/cm-7.2.0-supersonic.zip

GApps VM(Sprint voicemail) http://d-h.st/owb5co4f96pj/gapps-20110828-vm.zip

Look here for the best aosp kernel available. G is for gingerbread, I for ICS roms http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546878

CM7.2 has the cm kernel in it but most agree that the mason kernel is by far the best available;)

Best kernel for MikG is either:

1) Anthrax - great for speed and has some nice audio tweaks, battery might not be terrific...kind of stock-like.

2) Underworld - works great for most, can be a bit sluggish at times for me, but it's undervolted and my phone is very sensitive to undervolting.

3) Freedom - This one is pretty old, but has proven to be extremely stable. Even though my phone doesn't like undervolting, it could still handle the "More" Freedom kernel. The "Less" Freedom kernel would likely be pretty safe...it has less undervolting than the "More" build.

Ok I'm leaning to the anthrax or underworld kernel. I haven't heard about SBC until now. I read up on it but the last post was from Jan. 2011. Has SBC since been proven ok for batt. or is this debate ongoing?

There's risk involved with anything you do to your device. As rooters, this is a part of life.

SBC charging is fine for the EVO. There is the possibility that it can degrade your battery life over time, but this is expected to take years to occur.

For me, the ability to have the full 100% of my battery available to me to get a few extra hours of life is worth the possibility of having to spend $5-10 on a battery down the road.

AnthraX is a great kernel too though. Its probably my favorite sense kernel but not everyone looks for the same things in kernels. For the everyday user they would probably prefer better battery life rather than higher performance. I do not know your family member though so the choice is yours.

Update on the root situation. TacoRoot seemed straight forward but was a major fail for me. I ended up resorting to HTCDEV for the unlock, she is still S-on but rooted(side question-does juopunut bear wire trick work for you guys as well for s-off?). Anyways got mikg3.11 loaded and the underworld kernel (non sbc I wasn't clear on the direction about being plugged in before fully booted and it was getting late). Quick questions now, Has anyone else had problems with an error when clicking on the playstore (something like "this resource can't be connected")? Assuming maybe flash latest gapps?? THANKS

Update: I just went back and re-read what I was glancing at earlier on the underworld page, it reads "For SBC: And make sure the phone is fully booted before plugging it in." are they talking about before charging?..always? ...DERP

In order for the kernel to take over charging, the phone must be fully booted before being plugged in.

You should have no issues getting into the play store

I was able to get into the playstore, then I noticed the icon had reverted back to the market icon, so I went into the app drawer and dragged the playstore icon back to the home screen. A few minutes later it gave the error again. Saw some people fixed simliar problems by re-installing "play" so I'll give that a try later.

--on the kernel--
The phone will charge regardless, but for SBC to have an effect the phone must fully boot first?
