3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

I'm remaining hopeful that we'll get a date tomorrow, June 4th, the 1 year anniversary of the EVO launch.

If we don't get it then, I agree that the 13th is looking likely.

IMO it's stupid for Sprint to announce the date of a phone announced months ago AFTER they announce some other smartphones made by another company. I believe they will announce the date before the Motorola Event.

I agree. They should definetly announce it before the Moto event.

Unless, Sprint pulls another "releasing end of Summer" or "releasing Fall" etc.. with the Moto.

Then i can see sprint announcing the 3D after the Moto event.

I asked one of the sales guys at a NYC Best Buy today and I got, "we expect them in about two weeks or so"

Again, grain of salt....

Oh, btw, upgrading from Samsung M610

Just called the Sprint store in Killeen Texas and the manager said that the phone is scheduled to release "in the week of the 24th" of June. He even told me that I should buy another device to get the port in credit and then exchange it when the 3D comes out.

Just wondering should I interpret the "week of the 24th" as the 19-25, or as 24-31? I'm thinking 19-25, but just making sure that's how most interpret it.

Oh and I still believe it's possible that Sprint can start selling it before other retailers, but the manager didn't say anything about it.

Just like everyone else said that it would most definitely be June 3rd. Once again, until it is out, we DO NOT know when it will be released.

Yup. I can go back a few pages where people were getting miffed at my theories that the 6/3 or 6/4 anniversary date would not be a significant marketing tool, just based on it not having much significance to anybody that didn't get the EVO on the release date.

The original EVO's release wasn't crazy publicized, like say the iPhone. In fact, I even remember news shows talking about the Droid X more than the EVO, after the EVO had just been released...but eventually, people found out about it and word of mouth spread the popularity.

Wish we had a way to compare numbers. All we ever really knew is that Sprint exaggerated the Evo sales at launch (they didn't stock enough to meet demand).

Feast or famine? Inventory shortages or dusty boxes? How many are going to sell?

Will Sprint ever do a decent ad campaign for this phone?

But it does make you wonder how many more EVO 4G's would have sold sooner, had Sprint launced an all-out campaign to promote the phone very agressively. Do you remember the adds that did finally show up on TV? Remember the "here is what people are saying about the EVO 4G...." spot? Really? That is the best they could come up with for a phone of that significance? And here we go again. Here comes the 3D, which is not earthshakingly different, but it is significant and it does have one heck of an awesome marketing angle, but ....... nothing. I am no CEO or marketing type guy, but I do know what makes me want to buy and these folks are just not approaching this right at all. My two cents.....

It seems like they've been unable to keep up with demand for Evo 4G anyway, so it's probably a good thing they didn't advertise it more. They would just have a bunch of angry customers that they couldn't give phones to. The 3D may or may not be different. If we see a lot of advertising, then it probably means they have a lot of product to sell, if not, then it probably go down like the Evo 4G. (I'm personally guessing the latter.)

I actually admired the way the Evo was advertised. People tend to tune out advertisements. So if you advertise something that would mildly excite someone (as I imagine most cellphones only mildly exite people), I think that it would be better to start advertising within a few days of release or not even really set in on advertising until the day of release or soon there after. Because if you say "Coming in 3 weeks", people will tune out your ad, or tivo past it. Even if you change the ad to say "Out Now" in anything than full screen words, people may overlook it. I know I do.

So with the Evo's advertisements not really starting until the Evo released, to me, seemed like a great idea. Which is why I'm not worried about Sprint not advertising the E3D so much, just yet. Even worse, maybe they're still running into software issues and may have to push the E3D back from even the suspected June 24th date? That would be an advertisement fiasco. You know, like the Thunderbolt.

I'll be coming from this phone, you think I will see any difference?

Well there are a few things wrong this this...

1) All indications are that the target date for the Evo 3D was in fact June 3rd. But it got delayed during the FCC testing process. It didn't finally get approved by the FCC until late May, so that ruled out an early June release. Everyone speculating on the release date being early June was also speculating that the device had already cleared the FCC and we just didn't know it yet. The reality is the phone had not cleared the FCC yet, and took a lot longer than usual to clear the FCC.

2) The Evo 4G release date was very well publicized. Much more so than this Evo 3D. You may not have heard about it, but millions of others did. That's why it sold out on the day it was released and stayed sold out for several months. There were lines at all the Sprint stores, Best Buy, and Radio Shack on the day the Evo 4G was released. No, it wasn't on the same level as the iPhone. But this is Sprint we're talking about, not Apple. No phone has ever been publicized and marketed as much as the iPhone. It was Sprint's best selling phone of all time though, and it did have a very high exposure. I have no idea how you didn't hear a lot about the Evo 4G release date, but it was actually pretty highly marketed.

Oh, I heard about the evo. Go back and you'll see my posts about it 1 month or two prior to release. And I completely disagree that the original evo had crazy advertising before release. Look back at old threads on here. So many folks were complaining about how the marketing and advertising was for the evo and there were only a couple commercials about it. There were plenty of internet ads, but the overall campaign was very subtle. Show me where I said ANYTHING about it being more or less for the evo 3d OR where I said I hadn't heard about the evo! My only point was that I never felt like the 1 year anniversary would have marketing significance and bottom line is it didn't And wasn't used by sprint at all.

To add to this, All of the evo marketing bonanza had started afterwards. Prior to the release, the EVO reached the general consumer by way of internet ads and word of mouth, coupled with Sprint's advertising to EXISTING customers. I seriously wish people would read more carefully before they run on assumptions.

Well, again, regardless of what any expert on this forum may think, the fact of the matter is the Evo 4G caused lines at all the retailers selling it on its release day (even taking appointments, and opening early) and sold out on the day it was released. This is a fact. So clearly, it was marketed well enough.

And of course sprint isn't using the 1 year thing in their advertising. Because they missed the date. It would be one year if it released this weekend. It's no longer 1 year if it releases at the end of the month. And like I said, I am pretty confident that the Evo 3D would be in my hands right now if the FCC had approved it a month or 2 ago. with it only getting approved barely over a week ago, there is no way it could get released this weekend. So you can say what you want about them not releasing it this weekend for various marketing reasons. But the fact is, they could not release it this weekend because it was just barely approved by the FCC. Getting it out on June 24th is the first weekend they could have released it.

example: big echo announcement...

sprint needs help on their marketing plans. what, how, when, where, and how much...

If their corporate offices were in L.A., I'd put my resume in the basket for sure. And they definitely do need to start increasing their marketing appeal.

I didn't think the echo announcement was that big.
the blogs and forums went nuts over it but sprint didn't say much and the event itself was pretty small.

LMAO!. At least if nothing else you guys are providing great entertainment while we wait. ;). I for one have been and am happy with my EVO 4G so waiting a little longer won't kill me. . Have to say that I am constantly checking the forums and other sites for news. . Hopefully we'll find out something soon. . Seems like there is no rhyme or reason concerning this phone or its release!
