Help 3G Data Connectivity Issues

No 3G, 2G, 1G in Rutland VT area- since about 1PM.

At 5PM Even the tech dep't knew nothing about any system upgrade or outage and decided to send me a new phone.

Even now-- with an announcement at the beginning of the call to VM saying there are data issues, the Customer Service people still don't know anything about it.

Wow a lot of people having the same problem. Lost my 3G icon for over 3hrs. Thought maybe I messed up my data connection, somehow. Lucky me I got my 3G up and running again!

Not sure which one is newer or older cause I have the SILVER, but i got my optimus v on 5-26-11 from best buy in amarillo tx. I currently have 51 apps and thats including the stock apps. I always have 5 full bars whenever i'm at home... plus 3G and i stay in an apt complex. But whenever i'm at work i'm always at 3 bars or lower, plus my 3G is off and on at random times for random lengths. But no matter where i'm at when its at night...mostly after 12midnight...its always workin perfect....full bars maybe 4, and 3G always on....so I wonder if its just where we live, and the time of day...less people trying to use the towers faster response for the rest...you never know.

Yeah it sounds like there was an outage...but now its resolved. Cause my 3G was down today from 7pm til midnight....and by looking at everyones time stamp from there post...so did there's. So coming from amarillo tx My 3G was down also, but now its good.

I had problems connecting data earlier in the day and voice signal was flopping all over the place, but I figured that it was just because I was in a fairly heavily vegetation area(trees, etc.). Now I'm thinking that it probably started having problems earlier then went totally down later. I wonder if they're pushing an update to one(or more) of the Sprint phones...

Showing 3G, but no data in Upper Marlboro,Maryland. Contacted cust serv and was told that they're aware of region wide outages and are working on it. No time frame on when it will be fixed. Added 75 addtional talk minutes to my plan for the inconvience.

WTF, I still have no 3g! It went out last night, then started working again this morning. Now, it is back out again?! I called VM, and they told me that the outages have been resolved, but some are still having problems. That it should be cleared up in about an hour or two. Anyone else still having problems. ALSO, not only do I not have 3G, but I also have no bars! I tried to call my voicemail, and the call kept going in and out!

just called and NOW they are telling me give it another day! If I this were a contract phone, I would be VERY pissed right about now...I'm frustrated nonetheless lol

I was using the hotspot (3g data) last night between 7p and 9p CST in Tennessee.

I have used the hotspot (3d data) today between 4p and 6p CST

Must be out in specific areas?

Hi is it normal that when you are on a call the 3G drops?
I always have internet working fine 3G but yesterday I notice that it disconnect if im on a call and say no APN or something like that, but as soon as the call end it come right back up.
I was just wondering if it the same for all or is only me thanks.

I have had no 3g for weeks and NOTHING was working so I decided to look into myself.

go to settings>about phone>activate phone

this is the only thing that worked and its still working, so happy to have my 3g back! =)

Hi is it normal that when you are on a call the 3G drops?
Yes, at least here in the U.S., CDMA networks (i.e., Verizon and Sprint, the latter of course being used by Sprint's Virgin Mobile USA unit) traditionally haven't supported simultaneous voice and data connections over the cell network.

You've always been able to simultaneously use

  • Skype and web/email/IM over 3G (only uses data),
  • SIP telephony and web/email/IM over 3G (only uses data),
  • Traditional calls over the cell network and Skype/SIP/web/email/IM over Wifi (only uses voice; Wifi doesn't count). :)

When the iPhone became available on Verizon, that company announced plans to allow simultaneous calls and data over CDMA, using a technology called SVDO. I'm not sure if this has been rolled out or if Sprint has similar plans and if so, if the new network technology would be made available to VMU's 3G users. (It is conceivable, e.g., that Sprint would only give that little perk to its high-priced 4G plans.)

thank you thorsten very informative post. that for sure make me feel better I was like oh maybe what I installed caused that but now I know is normal.

when 3g drops do you still get 1x data or is it 3g or nothing? it would suck if you had no data when 3g stops, even if it is for only a little while.

mine is all over the place. I have had several time with no data at all....sometimes for hours. Then sometimes a reboot will clear it up.

I have a buddy that has the droid X with verizon. He was laughing at me at how slow my speeds were. Comparibly, mine is like 56k and his is like a T1

Just activated my new Optimus today (by phone since I was moving my number from Verizon) and same problem.... no 3G. After reading the thread here I tried the Activation button... no good fail every time.
Then I went to settings to try turning off Data and turn it back on.... guess what? 3G was TURNED OFF by default. Turned it on... instant success.

Go to settings guys and make sure 3G is ON!

Problem started after 6 weeks, a couple weird things happened on the phone related to SMS(a long text trying to convert to MMS, hanging things & never getting sent) & Apps/Services launching themselves, and killing the battery. Over time more of these seemed to get launched on their own, and there are way more running than the 6 apps I've downloaded, plus the on-board Apps I use. After googling these mysterious "Apps" there is still no explanation for what they are. ( Gives me serious pause about Android.) Anyway, thought perhaps I killed something when "Force Stopping" some of these things to save battery. Cycling Airplane Mode, Wifi, 3G Data Enable, Power cycling the phone all things I had tried. Hadn't pulled the battery.

After reading this thread thought what the heck why not try a few more things. I poked Activate twice. Both times action would not complete, saw the up arrow under 3G flash but not the down arrow. The process moved through steps 1 & 2, but 3 was not successful, brought up a screen:

Service is not available
Error: 06-07-5920
Contact Virgin Mobile at your Service
888-322-1122

Then I read the thread about Quick Settings(an Android Market App you can download), and realized I had another way to toggle 3G Data Enable On & Off. So after toggling 3G Data Enable (Mobile Data) on Quick Settings, to OFF then to ON again, 3G recovered.

I had been toggling 3G Data Enable (Mobile Data) On & Off & On again from the phone settings menu>wireless & networks>mobile networks.

So don't know if there is a conflict between Quick Settings & the original settings on the phone, that added to this problem(or created it), or if Activate cleared the problem in spite of it yielding the error messages.

Anyway, something else to poke at. I'll let you know if I run into anymore problems on 3G connectivity.

I have had the virgin mobile optimus v phone for about three weeks now and ever snice I bought the phone I have not been able to use the 3g data AT ALL untill today! Priviously I've had to use my wifi connection's at my home to not only connect my phone to the internet but also any apps tha needed the internet to run. I would like you all to know that I have researched the problem heavly before I called virgin mobile the first time, during my research I found multiple so called solutions that people were using to fix there phones some of these included taking out the battery and power cycling, turning off the data connections and turning the phone on airplane mode for a couple seconds! I tried ALL OF THEM with no luck what so EVER! Every time I would connect to the internet m phone told me that (connection problem, failed to connect to server). I would also like to say before i forget that thw whole time i has the phone i had full bars abd calling, texting, picture texting worked flawlessly. So after attempting to trouble shoot my phone I made my first of many calls to virgin mobile customer service and they tried to reset the phone it didn't work, they tried to reprogram the phone it didn't work, they issued me a trouble ticket around the 5th or 6th of june stating that the tech staff would look into my issue and contact me in about four days, i never got that call or email so i called back and the lady told me that the tech staff looked into it and that there was a possible fix which involed reactivating my phone from the ##87647# menu she then told me to wait four hours then attempt to use the internet, it didnt work so i called back the next day and begged the lady to send my call to the ever so hard to reach tech support and she did and I was transfered to a reall knowledgeable tech staff member I told him all about the problem and the attempts that were made to fix the phone he then told me that it seemed like the phone its seld had an issuse and I had two options 1. Take the phone back to the place of purcase and get a new one or get a referbished phone from virgin mobile so with my heart sank low I still didn't want to give up all hope just yet so I said I don't know if it means any thing to you at this point but when I try to access the internet it tells me failed to connect to server and he then told me to hang on he wanted to try something and five minutes later he came back to the phone told me he changed some things on my account and told me to take out the battery and hold the power button down for twenty seconds as the battery was out then I put back in the battery and attempted to use the internet and it WORKED!!! IT WORKED FLAWLESSLY!! and I think I was shouting on the phone to him ITS WORKING ITS WORKING!!! I can only discrible this feeling like a miracle from god just happened before my eyes!! For any one with this phone and problem you know how fusterating it is to have this issue was resolved I was so happy, I can honestly say I love this phone now!! Virgin moible has good service i have all bars all thw time and i cant beat the price specialy now with my two months free for my inconvence!! The 3g is just as fast in my opinion as the wifi!

So to all of you that haves tried all of the so called "fixes" there is still hope out there!

Make sure you hit the "Activate" button on the phone, it helps complete the provisioning for some users. It's likely just a temp glitch rather than a hardware issue...but...let us know. I'd also power cycle the phone at least once.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU......I read the LG OPTIMUS V manual 3 times and had the same exact issue.....no 3G connection, but wifi works fine. I followed your advice and I am ONE HAPPY CAMPER. I really appreciate your expertise.

I have a buddy that has the droid X with verizon. He was laughing at me at how slow my speeds were. Comparibly, mine is like 56k and his is like a T1

The disparity between VM data speed & Verizon data speed

is not enough to offset

the disparity between VM monthly bill & Verizon monthly bill.

.

When you and your buddy compare monthly bills, see who's laughing...all the way to the bank.
