Root 3g data signal strength

I realize I'm digging up an old thread, but I've been searching around and not found exactly what I'm looking for.

Here's what I'm seeing. I'm in a large commercial building today and I've noticed on two different ROMs (CM7 and Mik 2.1) that I have either full "bars" or all but one. I've made several voice calls and they are loud and clear.

The 3G on the other hand, cuts in and out. It is going from 3G to 1X and then no signal, then sometimes back to 3G. My 3G speeds are all over the place.

I always thought that 3G data signal strength was the same as the general wireless signal strength in -dbm. In the building, I'm at -66dBm to -82dBm at any given moment.

So what gives on the 3G signal coming and going?

I updated but it didn't seem to make much of a difference. I'm wondering if I'm in an area that is getting hammered by 3G requests and the tower is selectively "taking away" 3G from users as demand fluctuates. I'm actually in a hospital/medical building complex and perhaps there are just a bazillion users here trying to get 3G.

I do have full bars pretty much all day so it's strange to look down and occasionally see 1X and then 15 minutes later 3G is smokin fast.

One note, however, is that 4G is 2/3 bars consistently and is FAST even if I've dropped to 1X moments ago on 3G...

Um, wow. I went through the routine and went from 500K max download speak to 1500K max download speed in multiple tests.

That said, 5 minutes later, my phone switched back to 1x. I ran speedtest and got 15K down, lol.

Edit. And now 3G is back. Still showing all 5 bars the whole time this goes on.
