Help 3G Notification Icon Constantly On

Recently my phone will randomly start sending and receiving data constantly, even though no apps are open or being used. This causes my phone to get very warm and the battery to lose about 1% per minute. In order to get it to stop I have to reboot. I can't figure out what is causing this issue. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

my guess its because one of your apps is getting stuck in a loop when it tries to sync in the background.....I know the calendar was one of the apps that had this problem on a few phones.....disable auto syncing and see if that fixes the problem

It's the data connection you need to turn off.

How do I turn off the data connection, and why should I have to? It seems like there is an underlying issue causing the problem.
