
Omg, I got 3g here in fort lauderdale florida!
I have a Metro PCS Samsung Admire sch-r720.
my signal strength went
from: -65 dBm 65 asu (when i had prl 3019)
To: -101 dBm 101 asu (prl 3022)
I extracted the prl 3022 using QPST. ( i hope i did it right

)

just previous to getting 3G i installed :
1. Superuser (to gain root access) {got from the market}
2. Root Checker (to make sure Superuser worked)
3. and also updated the .prl list from 3018 to 3019 by dialing *228 then option 5.
so i dont know if any of these things had anything to do with my 1x becoming 3G ( but im psyched

)

Something Interesting i learned about signal strength !
I Noticed that when my bars Went Up,
my -dBm signal strength # Went Down.(menu/settings/about phone/status... scroll down to signal strength)
and visa versa
I assumed the higher number(-101 dBm)meant a better signal.
then here
Cellumap Cellular Coverage Maps I hovered over the (information circle)above the Signal Strength button
and saw a chart that showed different.
I've since learned that>> The lower the -dBm number is, the stronger the signal <<
-65 dBm is a good signal
where
-101 dBm is considered signal lost.
& not really clear on what effect the asu #(Active Set Updates)has on either Voice or Data.

the lower the number, the better.
So for example, a -50 dBm, has less signal fading form the nearest tower than a -90 dBm.
A 0 dBm, which is near impossible to achieve unless your climbing the tower, is 1 milliwatt of power. For every -3 dBm the power is being cut in half. So a -3 is a 1/2 a milliwatt, a -6 is a 1/4 of a milliwatt, a -9 is a 1/8 of a milliwatt, and so on....
A dBm in the 90's is the bare minimum to sustain decent call quality. In 100's and you dropping calls.
Our phones work on a 4 bar system, but I located Blackberry's scale so that you have an idea of the dBm to bars ratios.
1 bar ~ -102 to -120 dBm
2 Bars ~ -93 to -101 dBm
3 Bars ~ -87 to -92 dBm
4 Bars ~ -78 to -86 dBm
5 Bars ~ -40 to -77 dBm
