Root 3G problem on Custom Rom

IamPrssu

Newbie
I bought a new Desire HD from ebay. It was already rooted and some custom Rom (GoAPK Rom) was installed in it. There were a lot of apps installed which were in Chinese. I was not able to uninstall these apps even with Root Uninstaller. I believe the phone was also sending out some SMS as I was being charged( I am on pay as u go). I could not find and stop the app which was doing this as most apps were in Chinese.Even the Recovery menu was in Chinese. Somehow I managed to do a wipe using ARHD wipe & flashed the Android Revolution HD Rom 6.3.1 to it. Everything was fine except for 3G. 3G was working fine in GoAPK Rom but in ARHD 6.3.1, I am getting only Edge(all the APN Settings are exactly the same). So I tried to install next version of ARHD 6.3.3. I still have the problem. I am getting only

I am assuming network mode is set to GSM / WCDA Auto

Might be issue with Radio compatibility. Could you go into Settings > About phone > software information > More and post the based band version.

Would like to do a little research on it and see what comes up.

Hi, Yes the Network mode is already set as GSM/WCDMA Auto.

The Baseband Version is : 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

The radio is 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2. That should work fine with ARHD.

Your reads 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

It will display a P or U after the .25, depending on settings in the build.prop file on the phone (/system/build.prop):

The setting controlling this is called ro.ril.hsxpa. It is set to a number:

ro.ril.hsxpa=0 - UMTS r99
ro.ril.hsxpa=1 - HSDPA
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 - HSDPA/HSUPA
ro.ril.hsxpa=3 - HSDPA/HSUPA

I am a bit out of me league here. One of the more senior members will drop by soon. So I am posting this for their information, comment and advice.

Additional info:

1. What is you location?
2. If you have a file manager can you open:

/system/build.prop

Scroll down and look for:

ro.ril.hsdpa.category =
ro.ril.hsupa.category =
ro.ril.hsxpa=

Post the numbers. You may find more than one ro.ril.hsxpa.

since the device is s-off,and presumably superCIDed,you may want to run a more appropriate regional or carrier RUU. you can easily add root access by installing a recovery, then flashing superuser in the recovery afterwards,or reflashing arhd.

the eng hboot should not be casuing any issues once the phone is booted.

if a regional or carrier doesnt exist for your carrier to place of living, you could always install the latest unbranded htc ruu, wich will also install the radio recomended for arhd, and a matching hboot(you really dont need the eng hboot)

Shipped ROMs is a .exe file run on the PC

Shipped ROMs is a .zip placed on the sd and flashed in hboot

Shipped ROMs is one source for factory roms. FileFactory Folder View - Ace is another.

of course, its also possible your lack of 3g/H is simply an extremly coincidental network error,if your carrier has tower or some other sort of issue

if you made a backup, you could restore it and make sure its still working onthe first rom.

I found one more ro.ril.hsxpa under # ace RF team request

I didnt take a backup so cant go back to the first Rom :-(

If I put the sim in my X10, i am able to get 3G so i think it might not be network error.
Before flashing the ARHD Rom, I tried to flash one random RUU from Shipped Roms, after connecting the phone I got an error asking me to use the correct RUU for the phone.I used an app to find CID of my phone. It was telus001. I could not find exact RUU for telus001. Also I felt if I flash telus related RUU it might be locked & I cant use it on Vodafone India. I might be completely wrong here. :o

I will try flashing using the RUU that you have mentioned and will let you know.

hmmm it could have given you that error for several reasons. if you are running the .exe files, alot of times starting them in fastboot will let them work when you get the incorrect rom error. it also may be good for us not to make any assumptions on how the phone was rooted  the getcid app sometimes does not report the CID,it reports the bcid(backup-cid) so we actually do not know if you are superCIDed or not. unfortunately,it is equally impossible for us to know if you are radio s-off with an eng hboot.

it may not be a bad idea if you could perform the following, and copy the info back for us here. it will at least tell us if you have superCID(11111111).

running the ruu may complicate rerooting if youre not radio s-off,as the ruu will overwrite your eng hboot with an s-on one

first download and install these drivers: revolutionary drivers

then,download this small file:
mini-adb.zip

-unzip it,and place the unzipped folder onto the root of your C drive(not inside a folder)

-open a cmd window(with win 7,click start bubble, type "command" or "cmd" in hte search box)

-now change to your mini-adb directory(assuming you didnt chagne the name). type in the black cmd window that opened on your PC:
cd c:\mini-adb

-pull the battery in your phone for a few seconds. hold volume down, then power. hold them both until you see the white/colored writing hboot screen

-select "fastboot" from the hboot menu with the vol rocker/power button

-in your cmd window type:
fastboot devices

it should output your phones serial number. if so youre good to go. if not, youre apparently having a driver issue. i usually recomend these drivers from Revolutionary: modified htc drivers download and install the drivers(you should just have to run that file). afterwards, unplug your phone, plug it back in. make sure its in fastboot. as soon as you get a result from "fastboot devices" your ready to procede to the next step.

-in your cmd window, type(or copy/paste,is much easier):
fastboot getvar all

-copy the info that outputs here. right click in your cmd window, click mark, highlight it all in white. hit enter. paste the info here. it will help us know which ruu for you to run. :)

Does not look like you have superCID(11111111).

@IamPrssu

nope... defiantely not superCID. since the aahk superCIDs as part of the process,we can prolly assume that it was not used... possibly visionary was used to gain temp root, then the eng hboot installed. if this is the case, running a full, signed RUU will overwrite the current hboot, making you s-on

there are a couple ways to procede:

1)we can flash a modified 3.12.405.1 ruu. it has the hboot removed,so your s-off should be safe. its stock in every other way,so hopefully it will have working 3g. run the phone a couple days, and if all is well,re-install recovery as a PD98IMG file, then either flash superuser root files,or flash a custom rom,or make/ then restore a current backup. this would get you on newer firmware without changing your current situation, making future mods a lil more of a pain since your not superCIDed,and you have to worry about protecting hboot.

modified 3.12.405.1

2)you could simply install a newer radio and ril files. possible flash a different rom in recovery

3)we could flash a modified dowgrade ruu. this would protect s-off,yet put you on a firmware on wich you could run the aahk. the only disadvantge here would be the phone may not boot if hboot is incompatible with that older radio and rom.

modified 2.50.405.2

4)run stock telus 2.43.661.1 ruu. this would overwrite your s-off hboot, but leave you with a bootable, working phone that you could use the aahk on.

stock 2.43.661.1

IMO,s off and superCID is almost a neccesity to truly mod and enjoy a phone like the DHD or sensation, wich have alot of regional and carrier ruus, and is well worth the efforts to achieve.

in the end its up to you. if you wish to fully root,s-off and supercid wed be happy to link the aahk and answer any questions you have on it.

what i would personally recomend:
first: do option 3. if the phone does not boot,or the eng hboot casues errors with aahk, then do option 4.

hope that helps :)

I tried option 4 and I got an Error while running the RUU. Error code 155 Unknown Error
The Rom Update utility cannot update your Android Phone.
Please get the correct Rom Update Utility and try again.
I am not able to access the zip file links in option 3. Can you give me any other links to those zip files and I will try the 3rd option.

sometimes error code 155 is corrected by starting the ruu with the phone in fastboot, rather than in the booted operating system(power on into hboot, then choose fastboot from the hboot menu)

be aware, however, that running the ruu without doing option 3 first may result in a security warning what may be tricky to recovery from,if the RUU does a "pre-update check" after installing hboot and the radio.

im not sure why you cant access the links, they are all working fine for me. you may need to tone down any antivirus or firewalls you have running temporarily,or try a different browser, etc.

I tried option 4 & keeping the phone in fastboot worked. The Telus RUU ran fine & I got Android version - 2.3.3 & HTC Sense Version 2.1. Then I got an OTA update which updated it to Android version - 2.3.5 & HTC Sense Version - 3.0. The phone is not carrier locked.
I am still not able to access 3G. Now I am getting only "G" instead of "3G","H" or "E".
The current Software number is 3.13.661.4
The Current Baseband Version is 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M.

Would using the AAHK solve the issue? I believe it will bring down the Software number & roots the phone. But would it solve the issue with 3G? Please advise.

Great news. I think our phones are from the same source. Mine is a SEA Region unit from Singapore.

The good part is we now have a nice factory stock phone to work with.

We may have to do it to install a new Radio or ROM. For now, since you flashed a new ROM, could you check the network settings.

The 12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M Radio should work fine in India. That it what stock HTC Desire HD's in India are updated to.

Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > APN's

Is there one called something like:

Who is your carrier?

APN : www
MMS Protocol : WAP 2.0
MCC : 404
MNC : 86

before running the aahk again, did the ruu change you back to s-on? you can boot to hboot and verify s-on or off there.

you can also try doing a factory reset while you still have the stock recovery in place. weve found this to fix data issues on other devices after firmware is changed, and may be worth a shot. :)

your apns actually look a lil incomplete to me(specifically,i would think you need a more complete web address for APN,and MMSC), heres an example of t mobile APNs:

Name: T-Mobile
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: <Not set>
MMS port: <Not set>
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: <Not Set> OR Internet+MMS (depending on software version)

im off to work, but hopefully ral can track down correct APNs for your carrier/region and that will get you sorted.

your G data is basically "1x" speed, and could well be caused by the incomplete settings.

if the factory reset and/or entering correct APNs dont get your data back,a call to htc or vodaphone may be in order,as rooting prolly will not bring the data back if its not woring on a 100% stock device :(

Some phones have a......use 2g network only ......that has to be unchecked

Does your phone have this ???

Settings > mobile network > use 2g only (uncheck the box)

Also you could try

Settings > mobile network > network operators ......this will scan all networks ......when scan finished select your network and it should register

I am getting only Edge(all the APN Settings are exactly the same).

Should have asked earlier, but are the settings now same as before?

To reset you can going back to:

Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > APN's

Hit the menu button and select reset to default.

If that does now work I would probably try calling up customer support to verify the APN settings.

www is the correct APN for Vodafone India.

MCC/MNC should be automatically detected.

MCC : 404
MNC : 86

... indicates you are in Karnataka. If you are located somewhere else this setting is probably wrong.

No my Desire HD does not have the Use 2g only option.

I have tried both Search Network & Select Automatically options. Both are working fine & registering on the right network but not getting 3G.

Yes, I will try calling the customer support to verify APN settings. YEs I am in Karnataka. The Reset to Default is working fine in My X10 & Xoom. It automatically creates the correct APN & Points to it. It was even working fine in my old Desire HD which I had bought in UK( my old desire HD broke ,it fell down from my balcony :-( . I liked the phone so much that I bought this one in ebay).

I am manually entering the APN details in this desire HD. If I create new APN, the MCC 404 & MNC 86 come up automatically & I enter the other details manually & save the APN. The APN details are same as in my XOOM where I am able to access 3G. Also I am on an active 3G plan.

If I do a Reset to Default in this phone, I get a message "Resest Default APN Setting Completed" but I dont get any APN settings. It even deletes the manually created APN.
