I have my 3g turned off normally but realise that if when I did want network connection I could enable it.
But what if my preferred network connection was permanently set to 2g?
Would it still work but be slow?

2g (GPRS) is just slower than 3g.
@brainz could be right but in the UK you can still use 2g for browsing etc
PS I remember before Android, on my java dumb phones, 2g or GPRS was the big new thing.. Mobile broadband :)

I know when I flashed my bionic to at&t and T-Mobile I would leave on 2g and wouldn't get MMS . only the SMS came in and so funny that even if the last word was 2letters more it would come in as MMS . now the MMS didn't work til I either put on WiFi or if I put the 3g or 4g . I was called every name in the book :D friends was wondering why I wasn't replying. I had to do a show in tell at work . they laughed and said u not getting charged for 2g cause it stay active 24-7 . but the 3g and 4g has all your data on it . I was told to check hourly . but it never fixed itself . now to hear you say I should get both on 2g . I am m:mad:d blowing steam like a bull .

Thankyou for your answers ( although I did have to Google MMS)!
The only reason I asked is that I believe that set to 2g is less demanding on battery than 3g

Yes that's why I would leave it on battery would be on 85% at 730pm at night but the phone would be on since 800am
