gona go play with phone now but thought id let u guys know.

Giffgaff, unlocked.
That could be why bud if ur with orange they mayb working on there own version, u know how Orange are for bloatware.

ok didnt realize ur on Giffgaff as well, well im stumped bro. Im actually on skype now with friend trying to update but Kies wont connect.

Check you're on the BTU firmware. As that's the one that's got the upgrade. Came through for me as well. If you HAVEN'T got it yet be patient. It may come tomorrow.

Seems everyone but me has it.
On my phone it says:

GT-I8160

Baseband version:
I8160XXLL2

Build number:
GINGERBREAD.XXLL2

What gives

That's not the BTU firmware dude. The latest BTU version before the upgrade was LK7. You may have "unlocked" your phone but you are not on the UK unlocked/unbranded firmware.

If Kies recognises it you CAN upgrade it, but the upgrades will be on a different schedule so you might still have to wait.

Tip for future. Buy from the Carphone Warehouse. The phones from there almost never use branded firmware. ;P

Its weird because if it is orange software, there are no Orange apps on it, it doesnt even have an Orange welcome screen

EE uses LL2. Not sure who else Orange don't even have their own branded firmware. My guess is you screwed up your firmware when you unlocked your phone. If it's definitely unlocked firmware though you could try flashing the BTU firmware using Odin. Be very careful taking that path though.

It was just an unlock code which i purchased from Ebay

Just thought I'd chuck my tuppence in. I'm on Orange and my phone came from them unbranded with no bloatware. I had a couple of GB updates (didn't notice anything different) and am now on LK7.

I just checked in Settings for an over-the-air update but it says no update available. I suppose I'll have to download Kies *shudder* when I get home and give it a go. No idea if that makes any difference. I'll report back with my findings.

Should this also work OTA, eventually?

A friend has a Ace 2 (bought from Carphone Warehouse Xmas time last year, unlocked and unbranded out of the box), and def hasn't got and won't want to bother with Kies if possible. No desperate hurry to get it though...

Kies always gets the updates first. ALWAYS. It WILL become available OTA eventually but personally I've no idea whether that's a day later, week later or month later.

Personally I don't know what the issue is some of you seem to have with Kies. It's a solid software and the best way to manage your phone without rooting. Certainly the safest as if anything ever DOES go wrong it would be covered by warranty.

If you're on BTU and want the upgrade now then you'll have to suck it up and use Kies. (Or use Odin but if you trust that over the official route then god help you). Otherwise sit tight for a while longer and the upgrade will eventually become available OTA.

I could understand if it was Blackberry's horrendous desktop software but Kies is just fine.

@EasyDuz - The only way you could restore stock, unlocked UK firmware to your phone is to flash it manually using Odin. Enter *#1234# into the phone dialer and check what three letter region code is displayed in the CSC. That will help you discover what firmware you're currently running. You can download the BTU LK7 firmware from sammobile.com to flash with Odin. Once you have that installed perform a factory reset from recovery (I actually recommend two) and then Kies should recognise your phone and you could use it to upgrade to Jelly Bean MC8 firmware.

Just joined these forums after lerking here for ages, wanted to let everyone know, just downloaded Jelly Bean Upgrade via Kies no problems during upgrade, Kies updated itself first. I'm on 3 UK unlocked phone brought from Phones4u, changed network from Orange earlier this month. Works great like having new phone. :D
