Ya, that's probably for the best. BTU would get it first because that's the stock, unlocked UK region code. Carrier branded and any other modifications would come next.

You don't really need to be in a huge hurry to upgrade anyway. I've not had much time with this update but if it got really sluggish earlier (then seemed to right itself again) and if it's anything like the Portugal TMN MC8 firmware then it's actually a lot less stable than the MC8 firmware. My phone flew on Gingerbread. It seems to be more at a brisk jog on Jelly Bean, occasionally slowing down to catch it's breath and sometimes collapsing in exhausting when streaming video.

The BTU iteration may be modified and improved though. Time will tell I guess.
 
Long time viewer, but thought I'd take the time to sign up.
I'm on VirginMobile. No update offered OTA, but Kies update offered and applied about an hour ago.

Now running 4.1.2 on my GT-I8160

Turns out the BTU MC8 firmware is identical to the TMN one. The streaming video lock ups are still there. Was smooth as butter on Gingerbread. This firmware clearly wasn't tested properly.

Very annoyed by this.
 
To those that have updated, does it run okay? I've heard a couple of people say it slows down more than GB (I've never really had a problem on GB though).
 
First thoughts are....yes. Ever so slightly "laggy". Not a big deal. It feels more "fluid" as you navigate around, but there does not feel quite as "snappy" as GB. The look, feel, useability more than outweigh my niggles though, and they are very minor niggles. I think it's great, and I'm still playing around with it a couple of hours after updating it!

I honestly think its so much better than GB, maybe my GB install was messed up or something but I find JB is much much faster and responsive than GB

suggest everyone does factory data reset from the settings menu after upgrading

I did a hard reset at first and it left allsorts behind until I did the data reset


just watched a hodge twins streaming video and it played perfectly


after a days use I can't fault JB yet
 
I bought my Ace 2 from O2 shop, still on O2. No update through Kies or OTA yet though? Does it depend which network you're on. Anyone on O2 on JB yet?

Donni because your phone is O2 branded your firmware needs to be approved by 02 before Samsung will release it so it might take a little longer for you.

Then again it might have already been approved and you're just waiting for Samsung to release it because they release firmwares in stages, not just all at once.

I would suggest you just keep checking kies.

Ya, your GB must've been missed up Either that, or you were running Go Launcher which does make the phone lag on GB. The youtube streaming crash/slowdown is infrequent, so it might just not have happened for you yet and if you're not a heavy YouTube user you might never experience it. It does exist though where it never once happened for me on Gingerbread. Home navigation also gets a tid bit janky at times but that's really not a big deal.

I'm having trouble connecting to Kies here, can anyone help? When I connect the phone it comes up in the top left corner of Kies with the phone model number, but the icons just keep spinning saying 'connecting'.

Is there a Kies mode on this phone? I can't find it anywhere if there is.
 
There's an option to reinstall the drivers, I can't remember where it is but you could probs get to it by troubleshooting connection. Also make sure USB Debugging is disabled otherwise it won't connect.
 
Yeah I've tried that. I've also tried uninstalling the drivers and using some old ones (1.4.8.0 I think). It recognises the phone because the model comes up but juststays on 'connecting' for ages :( Very odd. Thanks for replying though.
 
Ya, i just had trouble connecting earlier myself. Did a factory reset on the phone and it started connecting again. The downside is I now have to reinstall all my apps. Joy.
 
After update my phone was not good, jerky, slow and at times crawled. So decided to factory restore it and now it flies, i kinda assumed that it would be fast at first because its empty but ive put my apps and stuff back on and its still slick. It really is like getting a new phone. The fact that i can hold down the middle button and have instant access to all the apps and stuff ive been using is amazing. I really cant stop playing with it, lol.
 
j800r - I'll do a factory reset and then try connecting again next week. Thanks, might be worth a try.

Are we saying that after a successful update to Jelly Bean that we need to perform a factory reset in order to have the phone work fast like before?

I was asked yesterday by provider support to perform a factory reset for issues relating to the phone switching itself off on it's own and not restarting, pity I hadn't just installed JB before I did that if the answer is yes to the above question as I couldn't be bothered going through all that again.

That was written with the One X JellyBean update in mind, but it rings true for any device with any major software update.

You can back certain things up before hand, if you're worried about losing stuff.

Exactly that, Thorahird.
It helped on MY phone, does not mean it will solve your/any-ones particular problem, If I insinuated unintentionally that a Factory Reset will solve any/all problems ( World hunger, International debt and cure Cancer and Aids) with every-ones phone, then I apologize.
 
In answer to pm5544's question, no. A factory reset could arguably help clean up some left over crap but it's not some magical fix button. I've performed several factory resets since upgrading to Jelly Bean and my phone certainly does not "fly". If anything after the last reset it's even MORE sluggish.

I really wish people would use YouTube hardcore and Temple Run (first one in particular). There are MAJOR stability issues. If the phone ever forces you to hold the power button to restart then you know something's wrong. I've had to do it several times. The MC8 firmware feels like a beta/testing firmware. It wouldn't bug me as much, but the length of time they'd take to release it you think they'd get it right.

It's really hit and miss. Sometimes the phone's fine. Almost as smooth as it was on GB. Sometimes it hits lag city though and it's not because I have a lot of background processes running. I can even have just cleared the RAM and it will hit a major lag spike. Something I'm considering is seeing if i can't revert to LK7 and upgrade once again to MC8 (maybe even OTA) to see if something just went wrong with the upgrade before although I doubt it cause when I was trying out the TMN branded MC8 firmware it was exactly the same.

Maybe it's not even Jelly Bean. Maybe it's the TouchWiz Nature UX overlay that is buggy on the device. All I know is something's not right with the firmware and no amount of factory resets will fix it. I mean, when YouTube starts having issues then you know somethings wrong. The very first iPhone in '07 (or was it '06) had a perfectly performing YouTube app.

Very disappointed nobody else seems to have noticed this yet as there won't be any possible solution until the problem is recognised.
 
lol, no dude. I know my stuff enough to avoid daft mistakes like that. In fact, I never enable power saving mode.

No, it's not me or anything I'm doing. It's the firmware not being perfectly optimised. It's not the end of the world though. Rooting plus certain system control apps help remedy the problem somewhat.
 
I thought u knew your stuff lol worth a shot, mine is running sweet as, played temple run seems ok and never had a problem on YouTube maybe im not as an intensive user as you, have you tried limiting background apps in developer options?
 
lol, dude, I already sorted it. :p You must have misread my last post or something.

I don't need help or anything. I'm just complaining that the firmware's in such poor state anyway. Not had a problem since I rooted and ran some tweaks but the point is i shouldn't have to. Samsung say your warranty is void if you root, yet they pretty much force you to with poor performance and bloatware apps.

Still. All's good now.
