Root 4.4.3 rooted OTA/upgrade questions

When you make a nandroid, backup system, data, and boot.

Everything else can be left unchecked

I used compression this time in TWRP and I got the backup down to 1.6GB. It's safe to use that compression option right? Especially if I have to use it for restoring my phone right? Now I'm gonna zip it and upload it to Google Drive. If I keep a copy on my phone should I leave it unzipped?

Thanks for all the help!

@Rxpert83 Hey, I just have one more question and then I think I will be ready to update. On the download page for 4.4.3 it says to do this

"- Download files above
- Boot into recovery
- Un-mount /system in TWRP (optional)
- Wipe: data, dalvik and cache (do this 2-3 times)
- Flash 4.4.3 (be patient - takes a while)
- Flash 4.4.3 deodex package (optional - if you want a de-odexed ROM)
- Flash SuperSU
- Reboot"

Where it says to wipe data, dalvik and cache will wiping the data get rid of my apps and or bookmarks/settings? How come we don't have to wipe the system? It also says to un-mount the system in TWRP but in my version of TWRP it only has a "mount" option...?

If something goes wrong with flashing the 4.4.3 zip file what should I do?

I think that's all my concerns and questions, thanks for all the help (and help of others)!

Yes, wiping data would effectively perform a factory reset on your device. You would lose all non backed up data (although you made a nandroid so even if you wiped data you have a backup).

I am suggesting you skip wiping data since you are coming from the stock 4.4.2 ROM. You shouldn't have any issues doing it this way, but if for some reason you do you'll simply need to either restore your nandroid backup or flash the ROM file again and wipe data this time.

System gets wiped during the installation process, so there's no need to wipe it before flashing the ROM (although it can't hurt anything to do so either).

Cool, I will backup my Internet apps, etc so I will have a backup of everything (using Titanium Backup, paid). Titanium Backup is a wonderful tool!

Well I wiped dalvik, system, data and cache 6 times now and while TWRP is installing N5_4.4.3.zip it runs for about 10 minutes then it says FAILED! E: Error executing updater binary in zip!

After I downloaded the zip I did a MD5 Check on it and everything was okay. I knew this was going to be a problem....

So now what? I have no system because I erased it...

I think I should have just done the OTA update, grrrrr

Well I did the OTA update and it downloaded and then made me restart my phone, it then actually used TWRP to install the update (KTU48M, 92mb, version 4.4.3). After the update I booted into fastboot and tried to open TWRP recovery but something happened to it, I get the little Android dude laying on his back with a triangle in his stomach and inside the triangle it has an exclamation symbol inside "!"..... so it looks like all I need to do is reinstall my TWRP recovery and everything will be good.!? I still have root though and didn't loose any data or settings. I will keep y'all posted. B-)

What likely happened is that when the ota got put into place, it re-installed the script that causes the stock recovery to get automatically reflashed every time the phone reboots.

Yeah installing the full OTA will usually replace your custom recovery (TWRP) with the stock recovery image from the OTA. Typically if I'm updating on stock ROM, I'll just "fastboot flash" the the system and if they included updated versions of the bootloader and radio I'll fastboot them also.

Just reinstall TWRP and you will be back in business.

I just flashed TWRP version 2.7.1.1 and then rebooted the phone, I then powered it off and rebooted into TWRP recovery, I repeated this about 3 times and it is working fine now. It will boot into TWRP just fine now.

The big flashable zip must not work on a Nexus 5 that was bought from Google Play store? Strange huh...

Well thanks for all the help and everything is working fine. If run into problems over the next few days I will post back other than that I think I am good to go... :)

Yeah check out my post number 56, I tried installing the big file (439.3mb and it did not like my phone)... LOL

Man something has happened to my gmail app after updating my Google Nexus 5 phone last night (ota update to version 4.4.3), it won't send out emails, it just says "sending" beside 5 emails that I tried to send out today. I'm using gmail app version 4.7.2 (967015). Is anyone else having problems? Are the gmail servers down today or something? This isn't very cool. I need to send out these emails for work. :-(

TIA

Gmail sending out emails just fine as of now. If it happens again, try logging in using the AOSP Email client that comes with Android, the one you use to set up accounts other than Gmail ones.

If that works, it most probably some app issue, if it doesn't, then maybe there's some issue with Google's servers.

Yeah, I had to reinstall the app and now it works fine!

BTW, I just got another OTA update on my Google branded Nexus 5, it's wanting to update me to 4.4.4! Geeezzz they gonna do an update every month? LOL!

Can anyone post the change log for 4.4.4?
