Root 4.4.3 rooted OTA/upgrade questions

What exactly is this spark thing? I have a Sprint Nexus 5 on Ting Mobile, are MVNOs included?

Spark is Sprints new LTE network. Its a Tri-Band network that utilizes a mutli-spectrum of 4g LTE bands.
It's supposed to be pretty fast too... 50-60 Mbps currently and they expect that in the near future to reach around 2 Gbps. So there standard 4g network will download a 60 min HD movie in 35 mins... Where as the spark network will download the same movie in 2.5 mins. Quite an improvement.
You can read more about it from Sprint here -
Sprint Spark | Sprint Newsroom

I guess Ting has added support for Spark so you should be OK.

But then, i don't really need to care since i will never be using Sprint or Sprint-based MVNOs, correct?

Correct. AOSP is tailored to GSM, which is unfortunate for Sprint users because Sprint has some proprietary stuff in their blobs (diag mode, prl/profile updates, etc). This can all be countered by having vendor blobs include the Sprint additions, but the only squad to currently be doing that is Slim. I'm thinking that's likely because one of them is actually on Sprint. No one in DU that owns an N5 has Sprint, so I haven't really had any incentive/motivation to go in and add it to our Github/Gerrit.

Very excited for Sprint Spark myself (I live pretty close to Chicago, one of the initial test cities, and went with Sprint for unlimited and unthrottled data/talk/text).

I'm rooted using CF-Auto-Root, and have the Pro version of SuperSU with OTA survival mode enabled. I also have BootUnlocker to lock the bootloader and clear the tamper flag.

Running stock kernel, OS (ROM), and recovery.

I'll let you guys know how it goes once I get the update. Here's hoping for smooth sailing.

Was prompted for OTA update this afternoon.

Downloaded and installed the update when I got home after work.

And... everything just works, plain and simple. No, seriously, I didn't have to do anything more than what I had already set up. I'm still rooted and have the same settings, permissions, and everything. :D

...

Also, want to confirm that this does enable tri-band LTE ("Sprint Spark") on my phone, at least as far as turning on the extra bands (tested by updating the PRL and profile). Have yet to test out Spark though. I'll likely make a new thread, or post in a more relevant one after I have the opportunity to test it.

Well, I seemed to have had an issue. I downloaded and installed the factory image and now my quick tiles don't seem to exist. Two finger scrolling down from the top or hitting the shortcut in the top right corner after a one finger scroll down doesn't seem to bring them up. Weird.

Edit: Just did another factory reset and it cleared it up. Though I don't know why it didn't work the first time with a clean factory image install.

You can't take OTAs when rooted and with a custom recovery. Did you use a toolkit to unlock the bootloader and root? If so, I recommend you to use Nexus Toolkit by WugFresh to update to the latest version of Android.

Welcome to the forums! :D

**To get out of your current issue - you should be able to reboot the phone without any problems being caused**

As mentioned above, its generally not a good idea to try to take an OTA update while rooted. (Although sometimes they do work  )

However, we still have multiple ways of getting you on the newest update - so thats not an issue.

The best way to go will be determined by 1) whether you want to keep root, 2) if you've changed anything to the system while rooted (such as deleting system apps), and 3) if you're comfortable flashing things through the recovery (TWRP).

1) if you don't want root anymore you can either unroot and take the OTA, or you can flash the factory image
2) if you haven't changed anything to the system, we can sideload the update
3) If you are comfortable flashing things in the recovery, you can simply flash the updated ROM and radios.

We can always walk you through anything, so thats not an issue either. :) Dont hesitate to ask questions.

Can someone point me in the right direction please? I unlocked my boot loader and have superSU pro and Titanium backup pro installed but never used it. I just received my update for 4.4.3. Can I download and install it or do I need to relock my boot loader? I've never installed any Roms or anything yet. All I did was unlock it. Thanks

If all you have done is unlocked the bootloader and have rooted your N5, then you should be perfectly fine to install the OTA.
The OTA will usually only fail to install if you have modified the system, kernel or recovery image. Even then, depending on the modification the OTA may or may not install. I've seen N5's with root and a custom recovery successfully install the OTA.

Hey, I'm rooted and have TWRP yesterday I just got the notification that I have a system update and i cant get rid of the notification. Should I try the ota update or just flash it with my custom recovery? I haven't changed or deleted anything with TB. Where can I download the ota update? Do i just put it on my internal memory card and flash it from TWRP or try the ota update? Which one would you do?

Download the 4.4.3 stock ROM from here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771010

That contains everything in the OTA update you need. (System, radio, boot)

Also download the SuperSU file linked in the thread.

Put them on your phones internal memory where you can find it from recovery

Reboot into recovery

Wipe dalvik cache and cache

Flash the ROM, flash SuperSU

Reboot. You shouldn't lose any data :)

I was unable to install the OTA even though I was on the stock recovery and rooted (I tried 3 times and each time failed). I didn't have any mods in the system except for the sound mod but that shouldn't have mattered. I did manually install it with zero issues.

@Rxpert83 Thanks man for the instructions, do you know if there is a change log that I can check out? I'm going to wait till Friday night and do the update that way if something goes wrong I will have all weekend to fix it. I'm thinking everything should go okay...

Hey Rxpert83, what's the difference between the deoxed and the regular version? Do you know if any apps are updated like the camera app, maps, etc?

Do you have any of the modules? What are all of these?

-gravitybox
- wanam
- xgels
- unbelovedhosts
- Tinted Status Bar
- ActivityForceNewTask
- Google Search API

You'll want the regular version. Android ROMs are either deodexed or odexed. Basically odexed Roms are a little faster, while deodexed Roms are easier for themers to modify different things within the ROM.

The default is odexed.

Camera and maps apps are updated through the play store. They aren't linked to android version anymore. its part of the way googles making android fragmentation a non-issue

I don't usually use xposed modules, but gravitybox is really the only one I'd need if I used one. Where did you see those at?

Hey, on my phone it says the download is only 92.2 mb but the link you gave me has the download size at 439.3mb... why is the flashable zip so much bigger?

Good questions to be asking :)

The OTA contains only the new things. It patches them into the full ROM that's already onto your phone when it installs.

The link I posted contains the full updated ROM, radio, and kernel. It doesn't patch what's there - it replaces them

The end result is the same.

Hey, it was on the link you gave me ([ROM] Stock 4.4.3 KTU84M ODEX & DEODEX (… | Google Nexus 5 | xda-developers) scroll down a bit...

Also on my phone the update download is only 92.2mb but the link you gave me to download the flashable zip files the file size on those are 439.3mb! Why are they do huge compared to what my phone wants to download?

Whoops, I see that you already answered the file size question. Thanks! I'm going to do another backup if my current system, etc with TWRP before I install that huge update zip. ;-)

Thanks Rxpert83! When I do my backup what do I not need to backup? I just did a backup and it's like 2.65GB! Do I not have to backup the data?
