Help 4G -> 3G switch causes streaming to error

When I'm in the car, and I'm streaming any kind of media (video or audio podcasts, youtube videos, streaming radio) over 4G, if the car ever drives through an area where the phone looses the 4G signal and transfers to 3G, the stream will produce an error.

Interestingly, the nature of the error seems to change depending on the application. Youtube throws an error something like "this video can not be played via streaming at this time" (by memory) whereas BeyondPod says something different.

Why does this happen? Why isn't the transition between 4G and 3G more seamless? Does anybody else share my experience?

Well....you are completely losing one connection and connecting to another. Other than an insane amount of buffer there really would not be a way to really do it.

If. You are rooted you could try disabling stagefright. Stock unfortunately you can not do much about it other than realize that 4G is just not broadly available yet and use 3g while commuting
