6 hour battery life

It's funny people complain about battery life.

The technology just isn't there to keep up with the juice required yet. Simple to understand, but countless hours of bitching.

People don't want to pay for a $200 phone that only works for 6 hours at a time. Nothing wrong with that.

I think what most people want, expect in phone battery life is to last one full working daytime 10~12 hours under moderate usage (several calls, texts, emails, occasional web browsing and camera shots). Most 3G phones now can do this, but it's tough to meet for 4G LTE phones. That's why people rant on it. Charge and Bionic seem to meet that barely and it seems like Prime will do as much or better if BMX comment is correct.

That's strange. Once you register a WiFi source in your phone/tablet, it should be able to pick up wifi signal fairly quick when it wakes up from standby. You may want to check WiFi sleep policy setting and set it to "never sleep", but then it will use a little more battery power.

I have Eee Pad Transformer and use for web surfing/emails at home. It really has all day lasting battery power. But its 10.1" size/weight is not as portable as phone. I think 7" honeycomb tablet like new Tab 7 plus is a good option.

I think it's more the function of my employer's public WiFi access procedure than it is the phone's settings. People wanting to use our public WiFi get directed to a log in screen and have to submit an email address in order to connect. It doesn't seem to matter if it is a legit email address or not, but you still have to do it. When the phone goes to sleep, I get disconnected from the public log-in.

If he was being honest with his last comment. I personally think his initial comments were the factual ones as they appear to have been spontaneous observations. It was several hours later...and many livid potential Google Prime customers panicking...before he came back and "clarified" his comments.

I think I'm going to have to hold purchasing the phone at launch because of this. I'll wait and see what real information comes out about battery life from users. Problem is, it's hard to discern fanboi-ism from impartial fact. I have terrible battery life on my TB, but there are people who swear "it's great".

Hoping for the best, though.

Different strokes for different folks. We all have our priorities when it comes to things we pay good money for. For some it's form factor for others its processor or storage...or where the volume control is located. Battery life happens to be among MY highest priorities. If "the technology isn't there" how do iPhones perform so well. Yes I know they are different devices, but the gap in performance between iPhones and Android battery life is huge.

And if it's okay with you, I reserve the right to bitch about whatever I want.

People don't really understand the inconvienience of a weaker battery untill they really see how big that gap is. I had NO idea how much better the Iphone really was untill I started using my wife's. It really is that big a difference and it's frustrating.

I know this Iphone is kind of a flop but a lot of people I know that are switching from Android the main reason is because of the battery life. Also a lot of people with IPAD's now have a good synch.

One of the other things I did like about her Iphone is the touchscreen is truly amazing IMHO.

Just a side note...The iphone is a 3G device, so of course its going to have good battery life. When the iphone goes LTE, we'll see how that battery does, right now there's nothing to really compare theses devices to...

That's good point. It's not really fair to compare 4G LTE device to 3G device for battery life. I think 3G phones like DX, Fascinate can come close to iPhone4 if no widgets are used and apps sync settings are managed carefully. I hope Google made some improvement on power management in ICS. Once iPhone5 with LTE radio comes out, it will be interesting to compare it with Prime.

Yeh but Sean, I've killed my TBolt battery in less than a day in CDMA mode only using my home WiFi...meanwhile my son's iPhone keeps on ticking. Again...LTE off, data off, WiFi in my home only...dead in less than 12 hours.

I'm glad Andy battery life is satisfactory for most of you. I want and hope for better.

That's not a very seamless or enjoyable user experience IMO.

Its not necessarily widgets that effect battery life, but some widgets have sync settings too. Beautiful Widgets is one I can think of off the top of my head. It has sync and GPS/geo location settings.

To me part of managing sync setting carefully means having a longer sync interval than the default settings or just having a longer sync interval. I think for Beautiful Widgets I have it set to 4 hours. It works for me since I'm indoors at work 8-10 hours a day. As long as the time is accurate I dont really need weather forecasts to be accurate.

I'm sure some widgets effect battery life period, but sometimes it isnt as cut and dry as that. Like some folks with Bionics found out Widget Locker was draining their batteries. Thats an app that lets you use widgets and icons on the lock screen. Maybe its a combo of the apps, widgets and Widget Locker, no one really knows right now. If it is just Widget Locker..thats an example of apps not coded or updated good that can effect battery life too. Just like for having good, bad reception and good, bad battery life sometimes there are other variables involved.

I get what your saying....but like Sandroid said...When an Android phone is tweaked about what widgets are running and what not, really plays a huge part in how your battery is conserved, especially with the iphone vs Android battery debate.

Now again, that's with a 3G vs 3G phone. Right now 3G vs 4G is just not possible for the most part. 3G will pretty much aways win! Its the price for all that speed in your pocket.. lol

Also...Im not an extreme tweaker, I leave most of my stuff running. I don't shut 4G off, I don't put my brightness down to zero! I use my phone as I feel works best for me, and how I use it.

Tweeter black_man_x panda postes that prime has about 6 hour battery life. If true, that is similar to thunderbolt battery life. With big screen and LTE, I guess poor battery life is expected.

Kinda disappointing.

It will probably be a little less than that. Higher def and larger display, 45nm LTE and higher clocked dual core. Six hours of mediumish use probably would be top of scale ;)

But he said later that's with non-stop heavy use. So that's not really bad for 4G LTE device. Even 3G phones can be done in less than 6 hours if used so.

Of course, we don't get like 2X boost in battery by simply removing widgets. From my experience, using one social/weather widgets seems to hurt battery life by about 10% or so relative to no widgets. That's with default sync setting. Using several more at default will definitely impact it noticeably.

That's if you believe him. I've said it before (sorry for being a nag) but I think he was in spin control mode when he made that last comment. How does he go from "The battery sucks" to "well, I used it non-stop for 6 hours so it's probably pretty good". I think he got told to quit being a buzz kill on the hypebeast. Again, JMHO. I'm waiting a week after launch to decide between this device and RAZR. Mainly because I don't trust the battery.

One bad widget or app can cut battery life in half.

Properly designed widgets will have acceptable amount of power usage, but all it takes is one bad apple to destroy the bunch.

I know how you feel bad about his comment. But if you think that's BS, I wouldn't put weight on either side, good or bad. Traditionally samsung has shown they know how to manage battery power. But I would also wait to see early reviews like you said.

That is subjective though to the user, but a high res 4.65" display with 45nm LTE and high clock dual core seems the main reasons for battery life issues. The tech and features keeps getting faster and higher, but the battery tech used is many years old now.

28nm LTE will help, but per Anandtech, those wafer yields in the industry will not be in mass production until some time next year.

Compare a 3g Samsung phone (any of the Galaxy series) to the Iphone 4 and you will see what we are talking about. It's not even close.

The other thing is that my phone without use drains the battery for some odd reason. If you don't pick up my wife's IPhone it uses nothing (or very, very little). I look at what is using the battery and it's usually cell stanby and some other BS.

It depends on how you use your phone. The screen and CPU should affect battery life mainly when its in use.

If the battery drains a lot sitting idle in the pocket, it is usually a problem with the software. Something is preventing the phone from going into a sleep state and using too much resources from the CPU and network.

some company will obviously come out with different batteries to expand the life of the phone. like so in the past with any phone release.
