Help 6 Nexus later....

Crude

Android Expert
So I decided to put my experiences into writing because I haven't seen a some what definitive guide to "malfunctions" and to help anyone that might be wondering "is that normal?" If you don't want to read the personal story scroll down for a summary.

As the title suggests, I've had 6 Phones now for testing. And I think this is where it ends....finally. I will address anything that I was exclusively looking for but can probably elaborate on anything I don't specifically mention and will be happy to help out if you ask.

It started around Dec 22nd when I ordered my wife and I each a Nexus...and with 2 day shipping I got them on the 27th  ( this would have really sucked if Verizon would have held me to their 14 day worry free guarantee for obvious reasons )The first two were remarkably different. My wife's, thank goodness worked flawlessly. Mine did to, until I made a phone call. It sounded like the speaker was separated. I was leaving for vacation for 10 days so I stopped by a store, the rep checked the demo and exchanged the phone on the spot. I was late for a wedding, so after activating it I left. After the wedding, I made a phone call and it only slightly better then the first but unbearable at max volume. So within 5 hours I was at a different store on the other side of town and practically had to promise the manager he wouldn't see me again if he would exchange the phone since, in his words "I was costing Verizon money" and "he couldn't hear a problem". Finally I ended up with one that was understandable on my end. While on vacation I used almost exclusively wifi which couldn't seem to connect to any wifi that I had saved until a reboot. Once I got home it improved, but I was still rebooting once a day to connect to wifi. After talking to a rep on the phone I was told to try some things and I'd get a call back 3 days later (Jan 14th) I didn't get the call after spending most of my free time resetting the phone several times. I called 1 hour before my day was over due to work and talked another rep into "just sending me a new phone and I'll send the worse one back". So I've been home with the flu all day and have had two phones here and my wife's so compare side by side and to my satisfaction I can say mine and my wife's function identically!!!

I had a buddy from work that I talked into a nexus that had the 6th one and his functioned like my wife's from day one. So now we have three that work the same way.

After reading the forums, during the process, I paid attention to sound quality, banding, purple tint, connectivity and battery life and here's what I came up with.

Summary:

Buddies: The only thing I noticed was some banding. It's there but only visible on low brightness and solid colored screens.
Wife's: Same as above.
My 1st: Some banding and terrible sound from headset speaker only.
My 2nd: Terrible banding and terrible sound. I could see banding all the way to second to brightest setting.
My 3rd: Banding was only marginally better then the last, it had a purple tint to anything black and had connectivity issues. On a side note this one is noticeably brighter then all the other ones I've seen.
My 4th: Very slight banding again, no other issues in the 4 hours I've been playing with it.

In conclusion, it is my opinion that Samsung has some issues (not that we didn't know that). I also believe that banding is some what related to how bright a screen it and the purple tint is definitely related. I have to believe that all Nexus have banding to warring degrees just some people are less sensitive to it or don't use auto brightness. I never had issues with the battery. Granted I had an extended battery before I had the phone, but even with heavy use I was getting a day it. I will say that 4g phones are going to need a big battery as I was amazed at how fast the battery would drain when browsing with 4g. On that note the 4g is very fast. My land line is only 1.3 mbps so I find myself using my phone more then my laptop at this point. It's almost worth the added cost to go to Verizon now if they would work on their customer service they would at least get a neutral review from me.

I should add, imo it is the best phone that Verizon is selling right now just make sure it's a good one before your 14 days are up.

Wow... sounds like you've had a bad streak of luck. All I can say is I don't have banding. My sound quality is spectacular. My connection has been awesome on 4g and WiFi.

My only complaint is the volume during music playback is sort of low. I understand that will be addressed in a patch?

I'm not saying that to rub it in, I just mean that there are good phones out there.

The Nexus has 2 major issues that I can see. I'm on my 3rd Nexus and have experienced many of the same issues. My first one had pretty bad purple tinting. My 2nd one made horrible static sounds when recording a video. And my 3rd one (my current one) is pretty much perfect so far.

1. The AMOLED HD manufacturing process is not perfect and there are many bad apples. It will get better over time, but that's just the name of the game right now.
2. The software (ICS + LTE + CDMA) is not perfect by any means. I am convinced, even after all the "delays" this phone was still released before it was absolutely ready. These issues will get fixed over time and 6 months from now the Nexus will be very near perfect.

The software issues I can live with because I know they will be fixed. The AMOLED issue is a seriously unfortunate side effect of the technology. Most people don't notice, but your average OCD nerd may go through 2 or 3 phones before finding one with a good display. But when you do get a good one, it's gorgeous!

I'm also sorry to hear that you had such problems with Verizon support. The support in my local corp store is great and I've talked to tech support on the phone and they were great too. They didn't question what I was telling them and gave me new phones right away.

Try Volume+ from the Market, it allows you to bump up the overall volume on the phone.

Thanks, I was a bit worried when I saw strange patterns on solid white parts of the screen when browsing the web. Then I realized that I was on the lowest brightness setting because it was set to auto (same problem I had with the Nexus One - auto brightness basically means lowest setting always).

I turned up the brightness and the strange patterns (what I am assuming is what you guys are calling "banding") faded away. If I turn down brightness it shows again.

I am assuming my device is normal? I hope...

EDIT: to me it looks like a weird faded plaid pattern..

the qHD screen that the GN has does indeed have a checker pattern that can be seen by those with good eyes (more prominent on my lower res bionic).

however, to determine that's what you're referring to, can you post a screen shot?

Did they give you a brand new phone every time or did you get a certified "like new" one?

They were all new.

I have seen over 2 dozen nexus on Verizon now and all of them have had banding. Some worse then others, but I see it on all of them.

My first GN, which is my current one, has slight banding. I figured I paid retail, I should get the phone the way I want it. So I called CS up and had them send me a replacement. They sent a certified like new, which had bad purple tint (but no noticeable banding). I sent it back without activating, and they sent me another certified like new one, which has very slight purple tint and slight banding.

I'm debating asking again and asking for them to send a new one and not a like new one, but I also feel guilty. Clearly their like new devices are people like us, trying to get a clearer screen and/or no bugs, and they are sending them out which is defeating the purpose.

Aside from slight banding, my GN doesn't seem to have real issues. Although I have noticed that occasionally if I turn off wifi, it doesn't switch 3g/4g on until a reboot. It's only happened twice. Plus, I feel like they might just tell me tough luck.

Well unfortunately I have no way of taking a picture of my screen as of right now (I am assuming you do not mean an actual screen shot because it is something that only affects the display - as soon as I turn up brightness it's gone).

It is a very faint checkered pattern only visible on lowest brightness setting.

If this isn't what you guys were talking about.. what the heck is "banding"?

The GN does not have a qHD screen, that is a lower resolution. GN has a 720p HD screen. Different tech.

I don't know about checkering, but the banding we are talking about (as least me) is akin to faint paint brush strokes. Vertical lines that are faint, and not entirely an off color, but visible. Here's an example:

xda-developers - View Single Post - Galaxy Nexus grainy and vertical banding screen!

Looks similar to what I'm seeing. Again though, only on the lowest brightness. To be fair, those pictures are pretty blurry and as much as I see faint vertical lines I do also see faint horizontal lines. So either that is the faint checkered pattern I see or I am missing this "banding" thing altogether.

That's sort of like what I'm going through. A "like new" Nexus had to be returned because of some defect. I just don't see somebody returning this phone just because they didn't like it. I'm on my third one and now my battery smells awful, and it's happening on both my stock and extended battery. I can't decide if I want to pursue another new Nexus or not. The people at the store are getting pretty tired of me.

I am someone who is colorblind and wears glass, can you explain what this banding is cause I just got one today and it seems fine, signal kind of off like lower than I expect from Big Red
