905 brings backs the horrible data drops.

As johnlgalt posted above in this thread:

If I were you, I'd go to .232, b/c you can easily go back to .905 to take the final ICS OTA when it is released,
You can go back to .905 from .232, then get the ICS OTA (on that happy day). (You can't (yet) go back from .235, though.)

Sweet! But the phone must be rooted in order to go from .232 back to .905, correct?

no. just need to use rsdlite and the 5.9.905 fxz file. If you revert it will erase all your data except whats on your external sd card. There is a way to go forward onto the future ota of ICS with out loosing data thou

How can you go forward without losing data?

sorry john, thats just not true in all cases.

i put the bionic on the leaked ICS as you suggested. Same issues.

So thats a leaked version of ICS on a bionic and a razr with official ICS...same issues on both phones.

I had one single CSR that mentioned she had heard of connection issues with some people that are too close to the tower. has anyone else heard this?

If both phones are doing it, then logic dictates that it is not and issue with your phones. So, my statement is not erroneous. Plus, I did say almost all :p

Your issue lies with something else. I would go outside so that your neighbors house is still in your line of site and see if you can get a signal - if not, then move to an area where your neighbor's house is not in the line of site. If you get a signal, it could be something in your neighbor's house that is actually causing the problem, making both you and VZW correct.

Never heard of that one before. I've heard of too far but not too close but I don't claim to know everything about Cell towers. :p

Have you exchanged sim cards yet? If you haven't I try that route.

I have.

Believe it or not I've seen such fluctuations living that close to a tower as well. I cannot explain it.

I can say this - for the BIONIC, the ICS leaks have cured all of my connections issues.

From another thread. I have verified this several times in very different areas.

One is on Interstate 75 in Macon GA - There is a cell tower not 200 feet from the southbound lanes. Whenever I travel through that area even at a high rate of speed (70+) my phone loses signal for a small amount of time.

Second is in a set of apartments in Atlanta where I used to live. The rear of the apartment complex abutted to a few gas stations and shops, and in between the complex and the gas stations was our complex's parking deck. There was also a cell tower there - and I live in the second closest apartment to that tower. My signal inside that apartment was rarely ever over 2 bars, mostly at one bar, and I would get dropped calls left and right.

I have other examples as well - but I've seen it happen way too often to discount it.

How can you go forward without losing data?

When the phone is put back into a state where the next leak / OTA takes place, the script used does not wipe /data nor the internal storage.

there is a script written over @ droid forums that does most of it for you. It flashes the 905 fxz without wiping data and before you boot the phone up you would flash the next leak/ota. This is the simplified version

What methods does one use to put the phone back in a state to receive the next leak/OTA when on a leaked ICS?

it's a complicated method. With leaks .232 and previous (chronologically) yuo just FXZ back to .905. With .235, you have to take several steps to foll the new update / OTA that you are in the correct state.

At some point (i.e., when it matters) I would really appreciate a link to that. :)

I'll get a working link for the thread.

Hmm. I'm not entirely sure I understand all of that. (And I don't want to try something with "Be Careful! This may brick your phone!" all over it until I understand it.)

(I'd sort of assumed that coming back to 902 (or 905) would be as easy as getting to .232. It appears I was mistaken.) This will require further research. Assuming that ICS ever goes out OTA before my contract expires.

When the OTA goes final, you'll probably never be able to go back to .902 / .905 b/c the most recent leak is set up like that - no reverting.

I think we just had a failure to communicate.

My understanding is that I'll need to go back to .905 (from .232) in order to get back on the OTA upgrade path once it does go final.

At which time, I'll need to understand the script to which dfib linked. Unless I just give up on the data-saving and use the (apparently much simpler) "rsdlite and flash to .905" method. Or am I misunderstanding?

You are. The data saving is simply the same FXZ with the internal .XML file replaced so that it does not erase internal storage, and does not format /data.

The FXZ is still performed as before, but the .XML file dictates what all steps RSD will take. A full FXZ to .905 is 22 steps, but data saving is like 19, skipping 3 steps.

You still perform the same steps on your end regardless of which manner you choose.

Alright! Just to give an update, I flashed the .232 ICS leak. Its freaking awesome btw! Now, does anybody have any tips on how to get the flash player to work? I cannot watch any videos on internet. It gives me the option to play them, but it stays black with no playback...

No, not yet. I've seen a variety of videos that do play (NHL.com) but more than hte fair share of those that do not. I'm not really sure what the deciding factor is anymore - NHL vids are all FLV as well, but they play perfectly fine....

Yeah, actually i just saw some vids on the new York times Web page. It's hit and miss so far... Thanx for the response though.

so my girls bionic has been on ICS for a bit now and still the same data connectivity issues. this does not fix it for everyone.

even on my RAZR, i just got it on the the new leaked version of ICS cause everyone claims that fixes the data issue but it does not for me at all.

according to verizons map i can be sitting in a location full 4g with 4g extending at least 5 miles beyond me in any direction and still lose data and only get 1 or 2 bars of 3g.

bottom line, im done. verizon is canceling my lines with no fees and im taking them to small claims court to recover the cost of the phones and to let the judge decide how much they owe me for not fulfilling our contract. not to mention how much time i lost from my work and family sitting on the phone with them trying to resolve this issue. i have probably 40 hours on the phone with them witht his issue.

i paid $200 a month for two years. ill be trying to get some of that back obviously.

good luck getting a judge to award damages from Verizon...

well they did break a contract. it is legally binding. if it goes that far ill report back on my luck for anyone else that wants to pursue it in that manor. im making one last effort to have this issue resolved.

I fxz'd back to stock when the official 905 update rolled out, still had random data drops.

I was on .902 running the eclipse rom by the way.

Here recently though, the data drops were becoming more frequent and more annoying!

Once again I fxz'd back to stock, took the .905 update, so far so great!

(Knock on wood) Not one data drop since, which I did all of this yesterday.

My theory is, maybe the tower's software in my area wasn't updated to match the 905 update when it first rolled out.

Right now I am running the stock rom, rooted of course, with no bloatware frozen. Phone is so far flawless! (Knock on wood)

I hope to make some trades and get my third bionic soon before the ICS update rolls out. :)

Oh, I did freeze the upgrade system apps so my phone will not automatically update, hope it works cuz it worked that way on my droid x. :)

Well I have an odd update on this. I have a friend who has a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2 and when we were together yesterday, they were telling me about the data drops they have as well and from the sounds of it seemed to coincide with what I experience.

Go figure that one. LOL

do you ever get the feeling that 4G is simply not a mature network yet? :)
