Root A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Froyo......

Newbie observations:

First of all, don't tell me its "easy" - that goes for anything tech related. You don't know me, and you don't know if I have any experience whatsoever. Yes, I rooted my NC, but it took me 3 days and LOTS of handholding to do it (just ask UB and bg).

Second, referring me to a thread on xda that contains 27+ pages on any topic, NOT HELPFUL! Then again, the jargon and lingo on xda is so thick that almost nothing on there is going to help me. I know, I've tried. After 4 pages, my eyes are rolling back in my head, and I think I'm going to have a seizure. Same goes for Cyanomogen - way to technical. Don't get me wrong, I know that these 2 sites have probably done the most for the root and custom ROM community and they do great work, but I just don't get 90% of what I've tried to read on there.

Next, it's okay for me to get nervous when I go to, oh lets say the xda thread about flashing Froyo to the eMMC and it says "If you are not comfortable with a command line environment, I would stick to running froyo from the sdcard." See, that's a giant red flag, in my face, telling me, "Chick, RUN AWAY!" Its okay.

I perhaps mispoke in my first entry in this thread when I talked about adb (see, I'm a Newb; I clearly don't know what I'm talking about). What I meant, in general, is flashing Froyo or HC or anything to the eMMC is a lot more work, with a lot more steps (and thus, a lot more potential for disaster) than either rooting or using a ROM from an sd card. And someone like me either has to wait for EXTREMELY CLEAR, NON-JARGONY instructions, or we have wade through a lot of extraneous stuff, ask a lot of questions, and hope for the best.

Having said all that, I am going to do it. I'm just waiting for UB to write that "for Dummies" book......

Just sayin'.......

HC, Us Mid-western girls gotta stick together...We are so much alike!! It cracks me up that when I read something, and then I read your response, it's just exactly what I wanted to say!!! LMAO!

Not sure if you're addressing me or not...

I never said it was easy, and I don't believe I've made any assumptions about your technical abilities. I simply referred you to the thread that got me through the process.

First of all @ mrfeh - I read HarleyChick's post here and I don't think she meant to come off the way it came off (just sayin').

HarleyChick, I'm not trying to put words in your mouth...I just have talked to you several times and know that you tend to get a little frustrated and I don't want that to be taken as you being pissed off. ;) You're running a rooted NC and because of that, most people are going to mistake you as being tech oriented (whether you are or you aren't).

Now, as for your post. I get what you're saying cause I've been there. I was there when I first started with Android, or Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop...even Windows. I know what it's like to not understand commonly used phrases...it makes it much more difficult.

As far writing a step-by-step "dummies" guide...I'm probably not going to do one. First of all, I don't have the time. I'm not the resident NC expert (believe it or not ;)), and I've never installed Froyo on the NC.

But the biggest reason I wouldn't make one is because what you have done thus far, and how you have done it, has taught you some things. You have then been able to comment to other newbies that are just starting out. Believe it or not...you're starting to understand this stuff. You may not know much about ADB...but you probably know what we're talking about now.

mrfeh has pointed you to a thread. You should take a look at the first post in that thread. Read the directions (if there are any listed) and then come back with questions. People here are very good at answering questions...but the more specific you can be the better. If you want to walk through the process step-by-step, many of us here will be ready to help you, but at the end of the day, you are there with your NC...you are pushing the buttons.

Does that make sense? I'm just trying to get you where you want to go...but realizing that you have to be the one driving ;) If something get's messed up along the way, it can be fixed and we can help...but you can't slide your NC to someone next to you and say "fix it please".

I wasn't talking about anyone specific, and no one from this particular forum. Everyone here has been more than generous with there help and advise.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with what was supposed to be a "commentary." I'll just go back over here and keep my big mouth shut.

UB - I was joking about the "Dummies" book, you know. And no, I still don't know what ADB is.

Didn't mean it like that. I was afraid that people answering your questions were going to take your post wrong. I think I took your post wrong as well. No need to sit in the corner quiet...that's not fun :D

And ADB is a programming platform for making changes to your device. You can plug you phone into your computer and then type commands using command prompt on your computer. With this...you can delete system apps (preloaded on your device), move files, modify files on your device that you normally wouldn't be able to find), and even reboot your device...all without touching your phone.

There are many apps that provide these types of functions without having to know ADB...one example is Root Explorer which is a special file manager that can explore hidden files on your device.

Thank you for the explanation of ADB. See, learn something new everyday.

As far as which autonooter to use...If you follow this link below you will see some of the file versions of Autonooter. V0.2 "barebones" only gives you ADB access. I know ADB (well, enough to get by) but I wouldn't and didn't use that version. What you really want to do is upgrade your firmware to 1.1.0 from the B&N website and then use the autonooter for 1.1. This way you have the latest firmware.

NookColor Rooting - nookDevs

I used Autonooter and got a great machine out of it! Thanks for the info! I am having some trouble learning about the softkeys thing, but so far I can get around OK. Thanks again!

I'm going to try this method today. Any words of advice? Anything I should know that is NOT necessarily mentioned in the first post in the thread you recommended? I really hate surprises....

I've posted a separate thread regarding trying to backup my NC before I start; which method did you use?

Between steps "Boot to SD Card" and "Flash ZIP from Wizard" do this:

> Backup and Restore > Backup

This will create a backup of the current state of your phone. You can use Restore if something goes wrong with the new ROM to take you back to where you were.

Good luck.

Okay, here is another dumb question: when the instructions for putting this Froyo onto my eMMC say "Boot your nook to sdcard" is there anything special that I need to do other than inserting my sdcard and turning my NC on? Do I have hit the power and the n button at the same time or something?

If you made a bootable SD card, then all you have to do is insert the SD card and then turn it on.

If the Recovery is internal (which I am guessing yours is based on previous questions) you can either go to ROM manager and click boot into recovery. Or Power down the nook, then hold Power + N for about 6-7 seconds, but not 9+ since holding it too long will shut it off again. You hold it to where the first title text shows up for about 2 seconds then let go, it will then go to recovery soon after.

I'm a little confused. When you say "bootable sd card", what does that mean? I burned the image file on an sd card, much like I did for Autonooter; is that a bootable sd card?

And I'm not sure what you mean by "recovery." Is that in case I screw this up, I may need to "recover" my previous setup?

If you burned a image to the SD card, then that would most likely be a bootable then. Recovery is the ClockworkMod thing you install from ROM Manger. Its where you can make backups, flash new ROMs, and a whole bunch more options.

Here, Recovery = CWM/ClockworkMod

I did it! I got Froyo onto my eMMC! BUT, I can't seem to get anything to work. My nook library will not load. The market place exists but nothing will download ("download unsuccessful"). I have rebooted, but still nothing. Very nervous right now about what I have done....:(

EDIT: Finally got my nook library to download, but that's it. Market still "unsucessful"; trying not to get upset. I've been searching through the forum for answers, but I just can't find anything that helped anyone. I really don't want to have to start over with this.......

did you do a backup of your rooted 2.1 nook? no worries if you did.

just wipe cache and restore the backup file to go back to where you were.

Before you panic, just go into your application manager, go to market, and select option to clear cache and data.

Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Market

That tends to fix most of the Market issues.

Yeah, tried that already. No dice. :(

please share the experience and knowledge! what happened, and how did you fix it?:D

In the thread "Need a Little Help Here...." Stinky gave me these directions which I followed to the letter. Didn't need to do the "recovery" stuff, just the wipe cache, force close, etc. in the second paragraph.

I which I could tell you what happened in the first place. I don't know why the market wasn't working. The flash of Froyo was really easy and all seemed to go just fine.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. I don't know if I can answer them all, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. ;)
