A guide on how I debranded my Vodafone Desire to get 2.2 quicker.

question, how big does a gold card micro usb card need to be, dont want to mess with my 16 gig card, and have several 64 meg ones kicking about, gave alot away ...doh !!!

i just used a old 4GB card class 2. worked first time with no problems.

i should re-phrase the question, could a 64 meg micro sd card be used for a gold card, or does it have to be bigger ? I dont have any spare bigger cards to hand.

so in short, a 64 meg micro sd is as good as say a 2 gig one, for gold card purposes ? I assume no, because i couldnt load the relevant images onto said sd card, or am i getting mixed up here ?

Hi,

Great guide, just because I like to know how to reverse any changes I made, and in case the thing needs to go back to vodafone for some reason, how would I revert to a Vodafone ROM, and where would i get that ROM from?

Thanks

I thought originally that if you needed to revert back then you could simply reflash the generic Vodafone Rom back onto the phone in exactly the same way as you flashed it to debrand. The generic Vodafone Rom is available on XDA Developers.

However im now not 100% sure if this is possible once youv'e updated to 2.2 becuase the bootloader etc is changed. If this is the case then we are stuck on 2.2 UNTIL such a time as a workaround is found or 2.2 is rooted.

I will amend my original post to make this a bit clearer.

Im aware that some cards will not work as gold cards (maybe regardless of size) but don't have a definitive list im afraid, I used a Kingston 2GB card.

Are you not confident about using the card thats in your desire ?

Still sat in there.

Just in case I ran through the process again taking the card out and formatting it and recreating a goldcard in case the SD card had be 'set up' by the Desire, but still no joy.

I'm at a loss :(

mmm, there is noise (all be it very quiet) that HTC 'may' have pulled the OTA update or temporarily suspended it. I really have only seen a couple of mentions of it, one on here (on the vodafone thread) and one I think on a post on XDA)

I will be keeping an eye on both forums to see if any other unbranded users (who haven't already updated to 2.2) are having problems. Although im guessing most have already done it.

Maybe try the manual install mentioned in the post above.

Ok, so I followed the guide, kept the goldcard in with the phone booted up... and checked for updates: nothing. "There are no updates available for your phone."

Great.

Follow Evil Genius's manual install.
Just completed it with the same issue and I'm now on Froyo 2.2 - currently extracting backups :)

Just out of curiosity Bully, what's you full software details?

Thanks for help, will follow the manual install.
As it's from HTC's site, I presume future OTA updates will be able to be downloaded from the phone? And won't mean manual updates EVERY time?

@Evil Genius: +'thanks' on your original post with link. ;)

From the amount of people that are now getting the 'No update available, your phone is up to date' message its looking increasingly like the 2.2 update may have been pulled or there is a problem with the server.

For those who still want to install 2.2 it looks like you can follow Evil Genius' link and manually install the update.

Ive amended my original post with an edit to mention this.

I read about boot-up loop after updating, but mine rebooted twice with HTC splash screen... I got worried. :S
But then...
"Congratulations! Your phone has been updated succcessfully to version 2.09.405.8."
Whoop! :)
Many thanks for all your help!

Now just change back to my bigger SD card, reinstall some apps and I'm back on the road! :)

Mines exactly the same as Evil Genius'

Build number: 2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys

All the same, so that's good - just wanted to check there was no difference in the download ROM and th OTA one.

Just as a side note I have two Facebook apps now and I have to re-link 'effin loads of contacts, so that sucks!!!

Bozzer:

Did your Evil Genius Update work ok?

I've just tried it and I get a message saying something about install failing when I get to the step 7?

"E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted."

Did you just copy the ZIP onto the SD by USB??

Could use a hand - I got screwed by Voda!!

Did you already download the dreaded OTA mate?
If so I dont think the update.zip update will work, afaik you needed to install a stock HTC rom, then put the zip file on the SD card and try then, It shouldnt matter how you copy the ZIP onto the SD card, Cardreader or USB imo.

I was lucky enough not to download the OTA, as I was at work and managed to read enough about it to decline it when I got home, I then Debranded via the OP guide :)

Hi all,

When it says use Usb to install the update.zip to the phone, do I need to install it to a particular part of the phone, My HTC Sync does not work and never has, does this affect it or is it just a case of drag and drop into the phone in Disk Drive mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
