Root a (hopefully) quick question about un-rooting

So I've rooted my phone, currently running gingerbread on Cyanogenmod 7.

My question is, I'd like to try to get a replacement phone from sprint tomorrow (my bluetooth cuts out about once per song, battery life is abysmal, usually doesn't even last a full work day with minimal use) but I need to know what's necessary to bring it in .

I DO have a nandroid backup of the stock HTC sense rom I think (or could flash it if nothing else) but the question is, am I safe doing that, is it enough? Or would I need to go through the whole un-rooting process?

Anyone with experience with this, or at least some knowledge on the topic?

Sorry if this has been asked before... it was difficult figuring out where to start looking
 
Go to the Rooting for Dummies thread and go to the Un-rooting section. You will need to download the s-on tool and the PC36IMG.zip file for your hboot.
 
you need to do more. After you flash, you will still be S-Off, which means your still rooted. Once you get S-On you need to flash the recovery. After all this is done, backup your sd card and format it to get rid of all your root related files.

So basically, yes, you have to follow the guide.
 
it is pretty simple
1)flash the unrevoked forever s-on tool
2)renamed the PC36IMG.zip to exactly PC36IMG (don't add the ".zip"as windows hides extensions.)
3) transfer the file to the root of the sd card.
4) power off/ then press and hold power +vol down.
5)hboot will automatically scan for it. And it should finish the unrooting process.
I just did for the same reason. Took me ten minutes.

Cool. The rooting for dummies tutorial makes it sound more tedious than that, but I guess I still have to go through the process of checking my hboot version and make sure I have the right clockworkmod version. I've actually done this once before (just because my phone was acting up and I wanted to get back to pure stock everything so I could re-root and flash a new rom) and I just remembered its kind of a long process (just beucase of all the rebooting to check versions and stuff . About to do it in a few minutes here (once this SLOW usb transfer of my SD card contents finally finishes...)
 
Knew this was going to take longer than I was hoping...

Went in to check the version of hboot and there's no "bootloader" option in bootloader mode (hope i'm using the right terminology there, held down vol. and pressed power to get there)

and of course, my clockworkmod version ended up being 3.0.0.5 so no help there... gotta flash the alternate version. Rooting stuff for me seems to always go wrong in one way or another
 
anyone know if clockworkmod recovery version 2.6.0.1 is REQUIRED? I went in to flash an alternate and its not even in the list .

there's 2.5.0.7, and the others are 3.0.0.X's

WTF! lol. Can't this ever just go smoothly...
 
update.

Attempting to flash RA recovery to get around at least one of the problems... Still not sure how to find my hboot version
 
To find out what hboot you have press and hold the power +vol down. It should go to a white screen. On the white screen look for your hboot version at the top.

The white screen is you boot loader. It looks like you were in recovery.

yeah, I actualy just figured that out a couple minutes before you posted this. Not sure why the tutorial thing says you need to power on into bootloader mode, and then use the volume buttons to somehow navigate to the mode you're already in... maybe something that needs to be updated in the instructions there. Its currently installing the pc36img update thing. Looks like its working correctly so far
 
Sounds like you've got it working just fine, so that's good. Just a quick FYI, though - you didn't need to switch recovery versions. You can flash the S-ON tool with CW 3.0.0.5. It will work just fine.

oh, thanks for that, Do you know what it means in the tutorial where it said that that version doesn't support edify?

Is that just a different ROM format or something? I tried looking it up but it seemed most of the hits I was getting were programming related.

BTW, I got it all un-rooted, so hopefully i'll have a new phone tomorrow to re-root tomorrow! :D
 
Edify is the newer scripting language used in recovery to flash files to internal memory. Amend is the older version. Clockwork 3.0.0.x supports only the new version (Edify). The reason some people still use 2.6.0.1 is because it's the same thing as 3.0.0.x, but with legacy support for Amend. If you're not going to flash any older update zips that are still using Amend, then it doesn't matter. The unrevoked s-on tool is Edify, so it doesn't matter.
