Root A Novice Needs You Again

I've asked many questions here before and you guys have ALWAYS helped. So.... I'm back again.
I got my EVO 4g LTE on the 1st day it was out. I rooted it soon after. I've flashed lot of ROMs but alas I've basically bricked it. I can't seem to recover from the bootloader screen. This is the reason for my question.

I went to Sprint and bought another 4g LTE. I rooted it but am afraid to flash a ROM because I'm not sure how to recover.

Here's the question: With the new phone I'm S-ON. HBOOT 2.09. With the 1st phone I was HBOOT 1.15. I had to flash the boot image for any new ROM before flashing the ROM with the "fastboot boot boot.img" trick or the Flash Image GUI app. Do I have to do this with the new phone? If so, how do you recover back to the original stock ROM since I don't have the boot image file?

why are you s-on? we have s-off now for all hboots....so go and get your s-off and you will never have any issues with anything.

now if you are s-on and want to stay s-on all you will need to do is make a nandroid backup of your stock rom so you can go back if need be. most roms now will have the kernel installer so that you will not need to fastboot command in the kernel. just read the op of the rom before flashing.

but like i said before you can get s-off now, so that is what i would do.

here is the guide:

He's right, you will still have to flash the kernel (boot.img) like you were before. Unless the kernel installer is included.

But you might as well go s-off. It'll make your life SOOOOO much easier. And it's super simple now. Not like before when you had to brick your phone to downgrade the hboot. That was scary.

Thanks for the info. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I saw from the instructions that I couldn't use that so I downloaded the Ubuntu drive and really tried to follow the instructions on running babyracun. I'm completely lost. I can't figure out how to maneuver around Ubuntu. I've given up.

you can use windows 7 64 bit. i know it says not to but i believe quite a few have used it in the past with no issues. give it a go . you only need ubuntu if you ending up qualcom bricking your phone.
